Starknet (@Starknet) says its account abstraction design could make the shift to quantum-resistant cryptography easier than on other major blockchains. The project argues that its architecture offers a structural advantage as the industry weighs how to respond to the long-term threat from quantum computing.

How Account Abstraction Supports Post-Quantum Wallets

Unlike Bitcoin $BTC and Ethereum $ETH, Starknet accounts are already programmable smart contracts. According to Starknet's developer StarkWare, this means quantum-resistant wallets can be deployed without a network fork or a migration event. Users can replace vulnerable signature systems without changing their account addresses or balances.

The threat centres on ECDSA, the signature scheme widely used on networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. An academic assessment of post-quantum signatures on blockchains notes that ECDSA has been shown to be particularly vulnerable to quantum attacks.

Starknet says developers have already demonstrated Falcon-512 accounts written in Cairo. StarkWare states that S2morrow built a working Falcon-512 implementation in Cairo, and that OpenZeppelin has published deployable Falcon-512 account contracts. Falcon is the basis of the FN-DSA standard, which remains in draft as FIPS 206 at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), according to Encryption Consulting, which expects final publication in late 2026 or early 2027.

Ethereum Dependencies Remain a Gap

Starknet acknowledges that it is not yet quantum-resistant across its whole stack. StarkWare says the answer is yes at the verification layer but not yet for the entire stack, because its STARK proof system is hash-based while accounts, protocol hashing and Ethereum-facing dependencies must be assessed separately.

Its current reliance on Ethereum still leaves settlement, data availability and bridging exposed to quantum risks. StarkWare's roadmap notes that the Cairo VM's secp256k1 and secp256r1 syscalls, which support L1-to-L2 messaging and the Ethereum bridge, are quantum-vulnerable.

The project argues that an independent L1 could address these dependencies with post-quantum protection built in. That would open the door to quantum-resistant accounts, validators and network infrastructure.

The claims come from the project itself, and the wider timeline for quantum threats to blockchains remains uncertain. Hedera, in its own review of the industry, describes the threat as not imminent, while noting that migration to post-quantum standards is already underway.
