Uniswap v4

Robinhood

Uniswap has been earning since the summer on fees that until then went entirely to liquidity providers. Since October 22 this mechanism also applies where Uniswap does not supply the liquidity at all: the so-called aggregator hooks route swaps from the web app through seven outside venues, and these routes also pay a protocol fee that flows into the buyback and burn of UNI. The Uniswap price stood at $7.00 shortly after 8 a.m. German time on Thursday morning, around 1.8 percent below the previous day and 1.8 percent below the previous week (CoinGecko).

What aggregator hooks are and how they route swaps through outside pools

In Uniswap v4 a hook is a small add-on program that attaches to a liquidity pool and intervenes in the course of a swap, either before or after trading takes place. Aggregator hooks use that point not only to search Uniswap's own pools but also to obtain quotes from other venues and to combine both in a single transaction.

For you as a user, little changes on the surface. You enter a swap, the app calculates in the background which route delivers the best price, and executes it. What is new is that this route may now also pass through outside pools without you switching sites or signing a second time.

The difference from a classic aggregator

Services that compare prices across several exchanges have existed for years. The difference lies in who collects the fee. With an external aggregator the margin stays with the aggregator. Here the route runs through Uniswap itself, and so the protocol's fee switch applies.

Seven external liquidity sources on Ethereum, Base and Robinhood Chain

In its own blog post of October 22 Uniswap Labs names seven external liquidity sources at launch. These sources are automatically part of the route calculation in the web app and can also be addressed by developers through the Uniswap API. It has been enabled on three networks: Ethereum mainnet, Base and Robinhood Chain.

Which seven venues these are is not stated in the announcement. Instead Uniswap gives a coverage figure: together the connected sources are said to cover more than 90 percent of decentralised exchange trading activity on these three blockchains. The company puts its own trading volume since launch at more than $4.5 trillion.

An independent report by the industry outlet Unchained from the same day confirms the launch and places it within the fee reform Uniswap has been pushing through since last year. This report does not name a fee rate for the new routes either.

Protocol fee, fee switch and UNI burn: how the money reaches the token

The fee switch is a lever in the Uniswap protocol that directs part of the trading fee not to liquidity providers but to the protocol itself. It was switched on by a vote of token holders that runs under the name UNIfication. The fees collected are used to buy UNI on the market and destroy it, which permanently reduces supply.

That path is now wider. Previously the fee only applied to swaps that landed in Uniswap's own pools. Trades that wandered elsewhere for want of depth brought the protocol nothing. That is precisely the gap the aggregator hooks close, because the route runs through Uniswap even when the liquidity comes from outside.

How high the fee on these routes turns out to be, Uniswap leaves open. The rate follows the framework token holders agreed in the summer, which varies by pool type and network. There is no reliable figure for it in the announcement or in the reports about it, and we are not extrapolating one here.

How much UNI is in circulation: 886.7 million tokens against a one billion maximum

The effect of the burn can be read off supply. The maximum is one billion UNI. Total supply currently stands at 886.7 million tokens according to CoinGecko, with 624.4 million in free circulation. The difference from the maximum is the portion the protocol has already taken out of circulation.

Whether that turns into a rising price depends on a second quantity nobody outside can measure cleanly: the fee volume that actually accumulates. A burn works through the amount it removes, not through the announcement. As long as it is unclear how much volume runs through the new routes, the effect remains a calculation with an open variable.

The UNI price this week: $7.00 and a 1.8 percent loss

UNI traded at $7.00 on Thursday morning. Over 24 hours the loss is between 1.8 and 2.2 percent depending on the data provider, and over seven days 1.8 percent. Market capitalisation stands at $4.37 billion, enough for rank 26 (CoinGecko).

Within the past 24 hours the price moved between $6.91 and $7.33. Over the course of the week the highest daily value was $7.45 on October 22, the lowest $6.86 on October 25. The token is around 84 percent away from its all-time high of $44.92 from May 2021.

What is notable is what did not happen this week. The launch on October 22 coincided with the week's highest daily value, after which the price gave way. A news impulse that shows up in the chart as a move of its own looks different.

What else came along in the same week

On October 28 Uniswap Labs additionally enabled Developer Analytics, an evaluation interface for developers. For the fee stream that is a side issue; for the picture of the week it belongs in: the team is currently building above all tools and connections, not new pools.

What goes into the burn does not come back: the destroyed tokens disappear permanently from total supply.

Levels up and down: $7.45 from last week, $6.86 as the floor

For orientation, not as a price target: to the upside the next documented level is the weekly high of $7.45. Above that begins the range in which the token last traded in mid-October. To the downside the weekly low of $6.86 marks the edge where buyers last stood; below that the round $6.50 mark is the next point of orientation.

These levels are observation points from the price action of the past seven days. Neither says anything about where the price is heading, and neither replaces your own assessment.

What the rebuild changes for you as a UNI holder

For the token the logic of valuation changes. UNI was for years a pure governance token: you were allowed to vote, but you had no stake in the protocol's business. With the fee switch and the burn, its value hangs on a measurable quantity, namely the fees the protocol collects.

Above all that means a different metric for you. Instead of watching announcements, it pays to look at the trading volume of Uniswap's interfaces and at the development of total supply. Both are public and both move slowly. Anyone expecting a quick price reaction to a product announcement is measuring the wrong quantity.

Buying route in Germany: MiCA exchange, DEX and the holding period

You buy UNI in Germany in two ways. The first runs through a centralised exchange authorised under the EU regulation MiCA, which since 2025 has set the framework for crypto service providers in the EU. There you buy with euros, the exchange holds custody, and you receive a statement your tax office can work with. Which providers hold this authorisation in Germany is set out in our comparison of regulated crypto exchanges.

The second route runs through Uniswap itself. For that you need your own wallet, ether or a stablecoin on the appropriate blockchain, and the willingness to pay network fees. A decentralised protocol holds no MiCA authorisation, and offers no point of contact when something goes wrong either.

Holding period and tax

For private disposals Germany applies the one-year holding period: sell UNI after more than a year and the gain is tax-free. Within the year the gain counts towards other income, with an exemption threshold of 1,000 euros a year. Every swap on a decentralised exchange is a separate event, including a token-to-token exchange. Anyone trading a lot directly through the blockchain needs a record that captures this; the common tax tools and portfolio trackers read wallet addresses directly for that purpose.

Custody, fees and leverage: where the costs become visible in a swap

In a swap you pay three things at once: the pool fee from which the protocol fee is siphoned off, the network fee of the blockchain, and the price gap between display and execution. The first two appear in the interface before you sign, the third shows up only afterwards. On Base and similar blockchains the network fee is considerably lower than on Ethereum mainnet.

If you hold UNI for the longer term, the token belongs in a wallet whose keys you hold yourself. The differences between the devices are set out in our hardware wallet comparison. Anyone betting on UNI with leverage is not trading the token but a contract on it, and carries the risk of liquidation as soon as the collateral no longer suffices. Which platforms offer such contracts in decentralised form, and at what cost, is a calculation of its own.

Open points: the coverage of more than 90 percent cannot be recalculated from outside

Two statements from the announcement remain unverified. The first is the coverage figure of more than 90 percent of decentralised exchange trading activity on the three blockchains. Uniswap does not disclose the basis of that calculation, and without the list of the seven sources the figure cannot be reproduced.

The second is the revenue. How much protocol fee accumulates from the external routes, Uniswap does not yet report separately. Until that happens, the connection between the product announcement and the burn remains a plausible expectation, not a documented figure. For you that means: the news changes the mechanics, not the balance sheet.

UNI burn: without fee volume from the routes the effect stays small

The aggregator hooks broaden the basis of the burn, and they do so at the point where Uniswap previously came away empty-handed. Whether that turns into pressure on supply will be decided by the volume of the coming weeks.

Take another look at UNI's total supply in four weeks. If it falls visibly below today's 886.7 million tokens, the mechanism is working. Your entry point for that is an exchange that reports prices and holdings cleanly: overview of crypto exchanges.

Work through your own swap costs before trading directly through the blockchain. Network fee, pool fee and price gap together decide whether the direct route is worth it. Anyone betting on UNI with leverage instead carries a liquidation risk: perp DEX compared.

Record your holding period and every exchange, including the token-to-token swap. One year of holding decides the tax on the gain in Germany: tax tools compared.
