An analyst says North Korean hackers have laundered approximately $242 million of proceeds from the October 29 Binance breach through the Tron network, according to unconfirmed reports, as the FBI is separately said to be pressing THORChain operators to block addresses tied to the theft. The alleged laundering figure represents a fraction of the broader Binance breach, which blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has traced at approximately $6.36 billion across ten chains.

What to Know About the $242 Million Laundering Claim

The $242 million Tron laundering allegation originates from a single analyst report that had not been independently verified at press time. According to unconfirmed reports, the funds represent a discrete post-theft movement through Tron-based infrastructure, distinct from the initial drain recorded on October 29. The claim requires wallet-level transaction hashes, source addresses, and a documented valuation methodology before it can be treated as established fact. For related coverage, see North Korea Hackers Move $19.4M in Bitcoin: Time to Worry?.

TRM Labs attributed the underlying Binance theft to North Korea's TraderTraitor group, citing on- and off-chain intelligence and structural similarities to prior state-linked operations. The firm placed the total outflow at approximately $6.36 billion, removed from Binance wallets across ten blockchains in roughly 20 minutes beginning at 20:05 UTC on October 29, 2026.

TRM documented issuer-level freezes totaling roughly $2.7 billion, executed by Tether, Circle, Ripple, and World Liberty Financial within hours of the breach. The firm estimated attackers still held more than 420,000 ETH and 18,270 BTC, approximately $2.4 billion in assets beyond the reach of stablecoin issuers.

Why Tron Is Central to the Analyst's Account

Tron's role in the incident is partially corroborated at the chain level. TRM Labs recorded an initial Tron outflow of 612.7 million USDT and 46.4 million TRX from Binance wallets, worth approximately $628 million at the time of the theft. This figure represents verified chain-level data; it does not confirm the separate $242 million laundering subtotal attributed in the analyst report.

Tron's structural characteristics make it a persistent vector in large-scale laundering operations. The chain hosts the largest USDT supply of any network; USDT supply on Tron reached $94.25 billion following an $18.67 billion increase, providing deep liquidity for high-volume transfers that attract less on-chain friction than comparable Ethereum movements. TRX traded at $0.3127, up 2.0% on the day, with a 24-hour volume of $1.29 billion against a market cap of $29.7 billion.

TRM's broader laundering analysis identified large swaps routed through market makers and lending protocols, a pattern consistent with rapid conversion of stablecoins into harder-to-freeze assets. Confirming whether the $242 million figure corresponds to a discrete post-theft Tron tranche requires specific wallet addresses, block-explorer transaction hashes, and a documented valuation timestamp; none of those were available in the sources fetched for this report.

FBI Pressure on THORChain Adds to Scrutiny of Crypto Laundering Routes

Separately, a single source reported that the FBI is pressing THORChain node operators to block addresses associated with the Binance breach. According to unconfirmed reports, the request targets the cross-chain swap infrastructure that state-linked actors have used in prior operations. No directly accessible FBI alert, court filing, or official agency statement was obtained to confirm the scope or legal basis of the request.

THORChain's relevance to North Korean laundering operations is documented in earlier incidents. The $351.6 million Bybit hack in early 2025 saw attackers swap ETH for BTC via THORChain, a route the FBI publicly attributed to TraderTraitor in February 2025. That prior attribution provides context for why investigators would examine THORChain again, though it does not constitute proof of a current formal request in connection with the Binance case.

The crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 34, signaling Fear, consistent with broader market uncertainty following the largest exchange breach on record. Prior North Korean Bitcoin movements have historically preceded additional laundering activity; a $19.4 million BTC transfer linked to the group drew scrutiny in an earlier episode that preceded enforcement coordination across multiple jurisdictions.

Binance said it covered 95% of stolen assets and resumed withdrawals on November 1, three days after the breach. The exchange's ability to absorb a $6.36 billion theft without a permanent halt to user redemptions will draw regulatory scrutiny of reserve adequacy and real-time monitoring systems across centralized exchanges globally.

Key risk thresholds to monitor: whether additional stablecoin issuers announce freeze actions on wallets identified in the alleged $242 million tranche; whether any THORChain node operators issue public statements confirming or denying FBI contact; and whether TRM Labs or a comparable chain analytics firm publishes wallet-level attribution linking the post-theft Tron flows to the $242 million subtotal. Absent that on-chain evidence, the laundering figure remains analyst-attributed and unverified.
