Satoshi

Eighteen years after the publication of the white paper, Satoshi Nakamoto’s project has far exceeded the initial scope of a rudimentary digital currency. Bitcoin has inspired an entire industry, new financial uses, and several phenomena that have entered popular culture. Yet, its journey raises a central question: should its success be measured by its adoption as an asset or by the lasting influence of its technology? Between hacks, institutional networks, and new uses, its legacy now appears broader than expected.

Eighteen years after its creation, bitcoin has deeply marked the financial industry and popular culture.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper inspired a crypto ecosystem far larger than his initial project.

Hacks remind us of decentralization’s limits, while centralized actors help freeze stolen funds.

Major financial institutions accelerate their blockchain projects, regardless of direct cryptocurrency use.

The sector’s future will depend on the balance between digital payments, institutional adoption, and Satoshi’s decentralized vision.

Eighteen Years Later, Bitcoin Has Changed Digital Culture

Since its publication, the ecosystem has experienced several waves of enthusiasm. CryptoKitties, yield farming, Dogecoin, and NFTs have successively taken center stage. These phenomena have not all maintained their popularity, but they have expanded the presence of cryptocurrencies in public discussions. Bitcoin has helped bring about a recognizable cultural universe.

This evolution goes beyond markets and communities. Auction houses like Christie’s and media such as Times have taken interest in non-fungible tokens. Other trends have marked social networks and economic debates. Even when they fade, these experiences leave references that the general public can identify and reuse in conversations.

The sector’s political influence is another sign of this visibility. The crypto industry was among the main political donors during the 2024 US elections. It also participated in financing campaigns related to the 2026 midterm elections. This presence shows that the sector now transcends digital asset trading.

Hacks Highlight the Limits of the Decentralized Model

This expansion comes with risks for users and platforms. Hacks are increasing and financial losses are reaching ever higher amounts. A recent attack against Binance, as reported by Cointribune, resulted in losses of more than six billion dollars. This episode is considered the largest crypto hack recorded.

The response to these attacks reveals a paradox in the ecosystem. Centralized actors like Tether and Circle froze about 2.4 billion dollars of stolen funds. Decentralized autonomous organizations and smaller platforms also blocked several hundred million. These interventions show that intermediaries play a role in crisis management.

On the other hand, decentralized assets follow a different logic. Bitcoin and Ether do not depend on an authority able to freely cancel a transfer. When a user sends funds to a wrong address or a compromised wallet, recovery may become impossible. This feature corresponds to the original vision but imposes responsibility on holders.

Blockchain Establishes Itself Beyond Digital Asset

The legacy of the white paper is not limited to the creation of an asset. Blockchain technology, designed to operate bitcoin, interests companies far removed from the crypto market. Walmart announced trials to track the circulation of fresh vegetables. IBM supported the Hyperledger project aimed at professional uses.

This distinction between the asset and its infrastructure reappears in discussions. Frank La Salla, CEO of Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, reminded this at an event at Georgetown University. He separated cryptocurrency as an asset class from blockchain as a technology. This reading summarizes a common approach among institutions.

Financial institutions develop networks suited to internal needs. Canton Network, JPMorgan’s Kinexys, and Intercontinental Exchange’s partnership with OKX illustrate this direction. Some banks also seek to build their own infrastructure. In these projects, blockchain can operate without clients directly using bitcoin.

Institutions Accelerate Technology Adoption

The idea of a useful blockchain independent of Bitcoin has circulated for several years. David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, mentioned it in 2022 in an article dedicated to tokenization. The World Economic Forum welcomed several discussions on this subject in 2023. The current debate thus continues an established reflection.

Charley Cooper, now president of Ava Labs, has advocated this approach since leading R3. He believes financial institutions are moving from experiments to concrete uses. According to him, the gap between asset prices and technology adoption can cause misleading interpretations. A declining market does not necessarily mean projects are progressing slower.

He describes an acceleration in the deployment of real assets on blockchain networks. This progression concerns actors who no longer just test technology in research and development. Tools are integrated into financial services, sometimes without end-user visibility. Bitcoin remains the historical starting point but is no longer the sole focus.

Bitcoin Facing the Uses of the Next Eighteen Years

The sector’s cultural influence also extends to video games, films, and TV series. References to cryptocurrencies appear in works intended for the general public. The appearance of a decentralized autonomous organization in a recent game illustrates this normalization. For some observers, this presence marks a lasting integration into culture.

The question of payments remains open for the coming years. The text foresees possible adoption in the United States in 2027 of a tax law facilitating purchases with cryptocurrencies. Such a development could encourage some consumers to pay with digital assets. However, it does not guarantee holders will choose this solution daily.

Bitcoin’s deflationary dynamic could incite some users to hold their units rather than spend them. In this scenario, stablecoins or fiat currencies would remain preferred for everyday purchases. At the same time, companies will have to choose between Satoshi’s decentralized vision and more regulated integration. This choice will influence the industry’s future shape.

At the end of these eighteen years, bitcoin has thus exceeded its initial role as an alternative currency. Its future will depend as much on concrete uses as on choices made by institutions. The coming years will show whether the industry preserves Satoshi Nakamoto’s decentralized ambition or favors services integrated into the financial system according to the real expectations of the users themselves.
