Joby Aviation launched a series of piloted electric air taxi flights across Florida on October 30. The campaign includes flights between Tampa, Orlando and the Space Coast. Meanwhile, the demonstrations mark Florida’s first operations under the federal eIPP program.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the eIPP initiative in March 2026. The program connects government agencies and private companies to accelerate electric air taxi integration. Additionally, the initiative supports the development of safety procedures for emerging aircraft operations.

Florida’s campaign represents one of eight projects selected nationwide under the initiative. The Florida Department of Transportation coordinates the statewide effort with several industry partners. Furthermore, the project covers passenger transportation, cargo delivery, automation and medical response across three phases.

Joby’s Florida campaign began with a flight across Tampa Bay on October 30. The aircraft traveled from Albert Whitted Airport in downtown St. Petersburg to Tampa International Airport. Notably, the route follows the historic journey of the first scheduled commercial airline flight.

That flight took place on January 1, 1914, between St. Petersburg and Tampa. Aviation pioneer Tony Jannus operated the historic service with former mayor Abe Pheil aboard. Consequently, Joby’s demonstration connects the company’s technology showcase with Florida’s aviation history.

The campaign also includes operations at Orlando International Airport near Terminal C and its train station. Joby plans to use a new vertiport designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Moreover, the company developed airport integration procedures through two years of simulations with federal and local partners.

Another demonstration will take place at Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility. The flight coincides with the UP.Summit, bringing Joby’s aircraft to a major aerospace location. Together, these demonstrations will provide operational data across several Florida aviation facilities.

Florida Infrastructure and FAA Certification Support Commercial Ambitions

Florida has developed its advanced air mobility plans since 2021 through the state transportation department. In April 2026, Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 1093. The legislation allows the department to fund vertiport infrastructure across the state.

Florida is developing SunTrax Air, an advanced air mobility testing campus near Interstate 4. The facility includes the nation’s first dedicated aerial test track for advanced air mobility. Testing at the campus is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.

Joby’s Florida expansion also builds on its existing aviation operations through subsidiary Blade. Blade has operated passenger flights between the New York area and South Florida since 2015. Meanwhile, the company plans to relaunch BLADEone jet services to Miami and Palm Beach in November.

Joby is also progressing through the final stages of FAA type certification. Its Florida demonstrations will provide operational information covering airport integration, aircraft acoustics and vertiport procedures. Ultimately, the campaign supports the company’s preparations for commercial electric air taxi services.

The Florida flights conclude Joby’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour, following demonstrations across several major U.S. markets. Previous stops included the San Francisco Bay Area, New York and Dallas-Fort Worth. However, JOBY shares finished the session lower despite the company’s latest expansion milestone.
