Binance founder Changpeng Zhao raised the idea after an online exchange with Elon Musk.

Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, said the exchange may rely on a SpaceX-linked investment to offset losses from a hack. Zhao, widely known by his initials CZ, made the comment publicly after an online exchange involving Elon Musk. The remark linked two of the most closely watched figures in tech and crypto in a single news cycle.

According to the reports, Binance holds a stake connected to SpaceX valued at approximately $1 billion. Zhao suggested this holding could serve as a financial cushion if the exchange needs to cover losses stemming from a hack. Neither the scale of the hack losses nor the exact terms of the SpaceX-linked position were specified in the available reporting.

The comment came shortly after Musk appeared to tease or troll Zhao online, according to Finbold. The exact nature of Musk's remarks was not detailed, but it set the backdrop for Zhao's response about the SpaceX stake. Public exchanges between high-profile tech figures often draw outsized attention in crypto markets, where sentiment can move quickly.

Binance has built a reputation as the largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. The platform has weathered past security incidents and regulatory scrutiny over the years. Maintaining investor confidence after any hack typically requires exchanges to demonstrate they can absorb losses without disrupting user funds.

Exchanges commonly maintain reserve funds specifically to cover losses from security breaches. Binance has previously referenced its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, as a backstop for such events. Zhao's mention of a SpaceX-linked stake suggests the exchange may also consider diversified corporate holdings as a supplementary resource.

SpaceX itself is a private company and does not trade on public markets. Valuations of stakes in the firm are typically derived from private funding rounds or secondary share transactions. A $1 billion valuation tied to Binance's position would represent a notable corporate holding outside the exchange's core cryptocurrency business.

The overlap between Zhao's comment and Musk's online remarks has fueled discussion across social media. Observers have noted the unusual juxtaposition of a space technology investment being floated as a hedge against a cryptocurrency exchange's security losses. The full financial and operational details behind the statement remain unclear based on current reporting.

Market Impact

Any suggestion that Binance can lean on non-crypto assets to cover losses may reassure users concerned about exchange solvency after a hack. Market participants often watch how exchanges respond to breaches, since the speed and transparency of a resolution can affect trading volumes and user withdrawals in the short term.

The disclosure also highlights how major exchanges diversify treasury holdings beyond digital assets. If confirmed, a SpaceX-linked position of this size would underscore Binance's broader investment footprint. That could influence how analysts assess the exchange's overall financial resilience relative to peers facing similar security risks.

Further details on the hack losses and the structure of Binance's SpaceX-linked stake are expected to emerge as the story develops. Readers should treat the specific figures as statements attributed to Zhao pending additional confirmation.
