Update 10:45 UTC: trail leads to North Korea, withdrawals within 48 hours. Investigators at TRM Labs attribute the Binance hack with high confidence to North Korea's TraderTraitor group, and Chainalysis points to the same group; Binance has not named an attacker. According to TRM Labs, about $6.36 billion left across ten blockchains, about $2.7 billion is frozen, and the attacker holds more than 420,000 ETH and 18,270 BTC across all wallets. Binance expects to reopen withdrawals within 48 hours; deposits work.
Update 02:30 UTC: Binance puts the damage at $6.3 billion. In an official announcement Binance estimates the total impact at around $6.3 billion, of which about $3 billion is frozen on-chain. According to the initial investigation, a DevOps engineer's laptop was compromised, which let the attacker access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance says it has found no evidence of a private key leak. The exchange will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and company funds; deposits and withdrawals remain suspended, and an updated proof of reserves will follow.

Update 01:25 UTC: Binance confirms the hack. Co-founder Yi He wrote at 00:04 UTC that user funds are safe and Binance will cover all hacking losses. Deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while the exchange runs security checks, freezes funds and works with law enforcement. According to on-chain investigator ZachXBT, more than $2.83 billion is now frozen. Before the freezes, the attacker had supplied 60 million USDT to Aave and borrowed 19,762 wETH, about $45 million, against it, as Marc Zeller of the Aave Chan Initiative explains.

BNB is the biggest loser of the night. Binance's own token fell from $738.90 at 20:15 UTC to $692.32 at 20:50 UTC, a drop of 6.3% within 35 minutes after a Binance hot wallet was drained of about $2.8 billion. Over 24 hours BNB is down 6.1% according to CoinMarketCap, the weakest of the ten largest cryptocurrencies. Not a single BNB was stolen. The token falls because it is a bet on the exchange itself. What drives the sell-off, how it compares with FTT in 2022 and which levels matter now.

The full timeline of the evening is in our crypto crash timeline, the details of the drained wallet in our Binance hack report.

Why is BNB falling harder than Bitcoin?

BNB is tied to Binance in a way Bitcoin is not. It pays for trading-fee discounts on the exchange, powers the BNB Chain and gives access to Binance token launches. When confidence in Binance wobbles, BNB is the most direct way to sell that confidence. Three forces stack up tonight:

Headline risk. The word "hack" next to "Binance" is enough for algorithms and traders to cut BNB first.

Leverage. About $628 million in positions were force-closed within one hour according to CoinGlass data, around $607 million of them longs. Every forced sale pushes the price lower.

Uncertainty. Binance only confirmed at 21:24 UTC that it is investigating reports of a potential security issue. Until the exchange confirms and covers the loss, sellers have the upper hand.

Prices from CoinGecko in five-minute steps. The bounce from the low came after Tether and Circle reported freezes: Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino more than 1.567 billion USDT, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire more than 800 million USDC. Together that is about $2.4 billion of the roughly $2.8 billion that left the wallet.

Is this another FTT moment?

The comparison many traders draw tonight is FTX in November 2022, when the exchange token FTT collapsed within days. The difference matters. FTX had lent out customer money and used FTT as collateral on its own balance sheet, so the token's fall exposed a hole. Before the hack Binance's public wallets held just under $145 billion in customer assets according to DefiLlama, excluding its own tokens such as BNB; the damage of around $6.3 billion that Binance reports equals a little over 4% of that, and about half of it is frozen. Binance also has a track record of covering hacks: in May 2019 it replaced 7,000 stolen Bitcoin from its SAFU emergency fund.

Separate the token from the exchange. BNB on Binance carries exchange risk twice: price risk and custody risk. Withdrawing BNB to your own wallet removes the second.
