IMF: over half of trading happens off-hours.

Displayed prices are not the quote you get.

Share multipliers can mimic a fake premium.

Redemption hours differ from 24/7 trading hours.

The IMF’s October Global Financial Stability Report found that more than half of the tokenized-equity trading it examined took place outside regular US market hours, across premarket, after-hours, overnight and weekend sessions.

Most trading happens when the anchors are weakest

That finding cuts two ways. Investors clearly want access when the stock market is closed, and the IMF found preliminary evidence that tokenized overnight returns line up with conventional stock returns shortly after the next opening. Its methodology annex describes a test on five equities, using centralized-exchange token data and conventional prices at the open and five minutes later. Both markets may simply be reacting to the same news, but the token price is carrying information.

The catch is timing. The hours investors favor are the hours with no regular-session stock price to compare against, thinner order books and, for some issuers, no direct redemption. The price may be informative and still expensive to trade on.

So who sets the price?

It depends on where the order goes, and the same company can carry three different prices at once:

Order-book exchange

Market makers and other traders post bids and offers. The price is wherever they meet.

Decentralized exchange

Liquidity pools set the rate, often routed across several pools, with arbitrage traders pulling it back toward other venues.

Issuer platform

The issuer quotes a price for each request, based on order size, inventory and market conditions.

When the stock market is shut, all three are pricing without a live underlying quote, so whoever is quoting builds in more room for risk. Ondo says as much: its off-hours documentation warns of wider spreads and conservative size limits on weekends and holidays.

The number in a wallet may not be any of those three. It can be a last trade, an indicative value or a quote for a specific order:

Price shown

What it actually is

Last traded price

Where an earlier trade happened, at its own time and size

Indicative value

A reference for display, not an offer to trade

Order quote

The price offered for a stated quantity, valid for a limited time

Ondo’s pricing documentation draws exactly this line between its indicative token price and the quote for a specific buy or sell, and secondary venues can add their own fees on top. For someone planning an exit, the useful number is what the whole position would fetch after costs, and a small recent trade says little about that.

Check what one token is worth in shares

Before comparing a token with the stock, it helps to know how many shares one token represents. Ondo describes its products as total-return trackers: reinvested dividends can raise the number of underlying shares per token, and supported displays adjust balances or unit prices with a multiplier.

A token representing 1.02 shares of a $100 stock would be worth $102. Set beside the $100 share price, that looks like a 2% premium, even though the two are worth exactly the same per share. xStocks handles dividends and stock splits differently, through rebasing, so the adjustment depends on the issuer and the exact token.

The legal wrapper differs too. Holding a backed token is not the same as appearing on a company’s shareholder register, a distinction Coindoo set out in its look at what GMEx holders actually own.

What the spread costs

A market can move in the right direction and still charge a lot to trade. Here is the arithmetic with round numbers:

HYPOTHETICAL TRADE

App shows …………. $100.00

Buy 10 @ $101 …….. $1,010.00

Sell 10 @ $99 …….. $990.00

Round-trip cost …… $20.00

As share of purchase .. ≈2%

Before fees, with no price movement

Size makes it worse. If only a few tokens are offered near the best price, a larger order eats into more expensive offers further up the book. Network fees and converting between a settlement token and dollars add to the bill.

Comparing it with the stock

A token trading above the previous close is not necessarily overpriced; news may have moved the stock since the bell. Shares also trade in extended sessions, and where those quotes exist they are a better yardstick than the close. FINRA cautions that extended-hours markets have thinner liquidity, wider price differences between venues and sharper swings, and that their prices don’t fix the next regular-session opening.

A fair comparison matches the time and the size of the trade. Without a live stock quote, the honest description is “above or below the last close.” The next opening is a useful later check, but it is not a price the overnight trader could have had.

Grey: regular US session. Blue: secondary trading. Green: issuer issuance and redemption. Yellow: available with wider spreads and size limits. Dashed: closed. *Selected assets only. Simplified; check each issuer’s exact dealing hours.

xStocks separates round-the-clock secondary trading from issuance and redemption, which run 24 hours a day, five days a week. A weekend seller there depends on finding another buyer. Ondo keeps quoting, minting and redeeming selected assets on weekends and holidays, but with wider spreads and size limits that can change, and requests can be turned down once those limits are reached.

A third clock sits in lending markets. A token’s trading price and the value a lending protocol assigns to it as collateral can update on separate schedules, as Coindoo explained in its piece on tokenized-stock loans over a weekend.

Before trading outside market hours

Before acting on an overnight or weekend price, run through four checks. First, convert to shares: find out how many underlying shares one token represents before comparing prices. Second, ask for a real quote for the exact quantity you want to trade, rather than relying on the number on the portfolio screen. Third, look at both sides of the market, because the gap between the buy and sell price is the cost of changing your mind. Finally, know your exit: confirm whether you can redeem with the issuer right now, or whether you can only sell to another buyer.
