Aave V4 has launched its first externally curated lending markets, allowing an independent risk manager to operate dedicated borrowing markets on top of Aave's infrastructure.
The first markets are being managed by institutional DeFi platform Sentora and are now live on Ethereum.
According to <a href="https://aave.com/blog/sentora-aave-launch" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Aave's official announcement</a>, users can borrow RLUSD, PYUSD and OUSD against selected yield-bearing and blue-chip collateral across three new markets.
The launch marks a significant shift in how Aave organizes lending liquidity and risk.
<h2 id="aave-opens-lending-infrastructure-to-external-curators">Aave Opens Lending Infrastructure to External Curators</h2>
Traditional Aave markets have generally relied on risk parameters managed through Aave governance and its associated service providers.
Aave V4 introduces a different model.
Its Hub-and-Spoke architecture separates liquidity from individual lending markets, allowing different Spokes to use a shared liquidity Hub while maintaining their own collateral rules and risk settings.
Sentora is the first external curator to operate markets under this framework.
The company manages collateral requirements, interest-rate curves, liquidation settings and oracles for the markets it operates.
That gives an external organization considerably more control over how a lending market is configured while still using Aave's core smart-contract infrastructure.
<h2 id="three-lending-markets-are-live">Three Lending Markets Are Live</h2>
The initial deployment consists of three markets.
The RLUSD Yield market allows users to borrow Ripple's RLUSD against USDe, PRIME, mWIN and PST collateral.
The OUSD Yield market uses the same collateral set but allows users to borrow Origin's OUSD.
A third Bluechip market allows borrowing RLUSD, PayPal's PYUSD or OUSD against kBTC.
The structure gives each market its own risk profile rather than placing every collateral type inside the same lending pool.
Sentora's original governance proposal describes the deployment as a dedicated Ethereum Liquidity Hub connected to separate Spokes for different collateral categories.
<h2 id="why-aave-v4-uses-hubs-and-spokes">Why Aave V4 Uses Hubs and Spokes</h2>
The core idea behind Aave V4 is to separate liquidity from risk management.
In previous lending architectures, each market often required its own isolated liquidity pool.
That fragmentation can make capital less efficient.
Under V4, liquidity providers deposit assets into a Hub.
Individual Spokes can then draw liquidity from that Hub subject to their own collateral and borrowing rules.
This means several lending markets can share liquidity without necessarily sharing the same risk assumptions.
Sentora explains that the architecture allows each Spoke to maintain independent collateral assets, price feeds and risk parameters while drawing from a common liquidity source.
For lenders, the potential advantage is better capital efficiency.
For borrowers, it means more specialized markets can be created without requiring a completely separate pool for every use case.
<h2 id="sentora-controls-risk-parameters">Sentora Controls Risk Parameters</h2>
External curation does not simply mean adding another frontend to Aave.
Sentora has operational control over several important parameters inside its markets.
According to the Aave governance proposal, Sentora can manage collateral selection, interest-rate curves, risk parameters and oracle configuration.
That makes the role closer to a professional credit or risk manager than a passive market operator.
Sentora says it has allocated more than $2 billion across onchain strategies and uses more than 1,000 risk models within its broader institutional DeFi platform.
This model could allow Aave to support more specialized lending markets without requiring the DAO itself to manage every individual risk decision.
<h2 id="aave-dao-still-retains-control">Aave DAO Still Retains Control</h2>
The system does not give external curators unlimited authority.
Aave DAO retains ownership of the underlying smart contracts and core administrative permissions.
Risk-increasing changes are subject to a 48-hour timelock.
New collateral assets and new Hub deployments also remain subject to governance oversight.
Sentora can make risk-reducing adjustments more quickly, but actions that increase exposure face additional controls.
The DAO can also revoke Sentora's operational permissions through governance.
This creates a layered structure where the curator manages day-to-day risk while the DAO retains ultimate control over the protocol infrastructure.
<h2 id="stablecoins-are-at-the-center-of-the-new-markets">Stablecoins Are at the Center of the New Markets</h2>
The first Sentora deployment is heavily focused on stablecoin borrowing.
RLUSD, PYUSD and OUSD are the only borrowable assets in the initial markets.
That is notable because Aave's largest lending markets have historically centered on USDC, USDT and other widely adopted stablecoins.
The Sentora Hub intentionally excludes USDC and USDT to avoid competing directly with Aave's existing liquidity pools.
Instead, the new markets provide a venue for newer or more specialized stablecoins to develop their own lending liquidity.
RLUSD and PYUSD in particular have been expanding their presence across DeFi as issuers seek additional utility beyond payments and transfers.
<h2 id="kbtc-becomes-blue-chip-collateral">kBTC Becomes Blue-Chip Collateral</h2>
The Bluechip market introduces another notable feature: Bitcoin-backed collateral.
Users can borrow RLUSD, PYUSD or OUSD against kBTC.
Bitcoin-backed lending remains one of the largest potential markets in DeFi because BTC holders often want liquidity without selling their underlying Bitcoin exposure.
Historically, that has required wrapped or custodied representations of Bitcoin.
The new Sentora market continues that model through kBTC while separating the risk into a dedicated lending Spoke.
Aave is also considering a separate proposal from Babylon Labs that would eventually allow users to borrow against native BTC without wrapping or bridging it.
That proposal remains in governance and has not yet launched.
<h2 id="curated-lending-is-becoming-a-major-defi-model">Curated Lending Is Becoming a Major DeFi Model</h2>
External curation has already become common across other DeFi lending platforms.
Protocols such as Morpho have popularized structures where independent curators build lending vaults around specific collateral and risk assumptions.
Aave's move brings a similar concept into a much larger lending ecosystem.
The difference is that V4 combines external curation with shared liquidity infrastructure.
Instead of forcing every curator to operate a completely separate lending pool, the Hub-and-Spoke architecture can allow multiple risk-isolated markets to access liquidity more efficiently.
That could make it easier to create markets for tokenized assets, stablecoins and institutionally managed collateral.
<h2 id="lending-risk-becomes-more-modular">Lending Risk Becomes More Modular</h2>
The new structure also changes how risk needs to be monitored.
Sentora notes that Aave V4 risk now exists at three separate levels: the Hub, the Spoke and the individual collateral asset.
A liquidity provider therefore needs to understand not only the asset they are supplying but also which Spokes can access that liquidity and under what limits.
V4 addresses this with add caps and draw caps.
Add caps limit how much liquidity an asset can contribute to a Hub.
Draw caps limit how much of that liquidity a particular Spoke can borrow.
These controls are intended to prevent one market from consuming excessive liquidity or exposing the entire Hub to a single collateral risk.
<h2 id="aave-expands-beyond-standard-defi-lending">Aave Expands Beyond Standard DeFi Lending</h2>
The Sentora launch is part of a broader expansion of Aave V4.
Earlier this month, Aave V4 launched on Base with an Equities Hub that allows tokenized shares including Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla to be used in USDC lending markets.
Aave is also exploring institutionally custodied collateral and native Bitcoin lending through separate governance proposals.
Together, these developments suggest Aave is moving beyond the traditional model of lending against standard crypto assets.
The protocol is increasingly positioning itself as infrastructure for multiple forms of onchain credit.
<h2 id="a-new-phase-for-defi-lending">A New Phase for DeFi Lending</h2>
The launch of externally curated markets could become one of the more important changes introduced by Aave V4.
Aave provides the smart-contract infrastructure and liquidity architecture.
Sentora manages the risk.
Governance retains ultimate control.
That separation may allow more specialized lending markets to launch without forcing Aave DAO to directly manage every parameter.
The first deployment remains relatively limited, with only three markets and a narrow set of assets.
But the structure is designed to scale.
If the model succeeds, Aave V4 could increasingly operate less like a single lending market and more like a network of independently managed credit markets sharing common infrastructure.
For DeFi lending, that would represent a significant shift from one-size-fits-all liquidity pools toward more modular and professionally curated onchain credit.
