Stellar has introduced a new blockchain execution model called Project Thruput, designed to dramatically increase payment processing capacity.
The project is already live on FutureNet, Stellar’s testing environment, where early benchmarks reportedly reached 7.02 million payments per second.
The performance figure represents a significant milestone for blockchain scalability research.
Unlike traditional execution systems that rely heavily on the processing capacity of individual machines, Stellar Project Thruput distributes execution across multiple machines.
This approach aims to overcome hardware limitations that can restrict how many transactions a blockchain processes simultaneously.
For a network focused on payments and financial transfers, greater processing capacity could eventually support much larger transaction volumes.
However, the reported results come from early benchmarks rather than normal mainnet activity.
That distinction is important because performance in a controlled testing environment may differ significantly from real-world network conditions.

The main innovation behind Stellar Project Thruput is its ability to scale transaction execution across multiple machines.
In conventional blockchain systems, transaction processing can become a bottleneck as network activity increases.
Even when more powerful hardware is introduced, a single machine can eventually reach its processing limits.
Project Thruput explores a different approach by allowing execution workloads to be distributed across several machines.
This could make it possible to increase overall processing capacity as additional computing resources become available.
The reported benchmark of 7.02 million payments per second demonstrates the potential of this architecture under the conditions tested.
However, transaction execution speed is not the same as fully confirmed network throughput.
A production blockchain must also handle consensus, data availability, transaction validation and other operational requirements.
The available announcement does not establish that Stellar’s mainnet can currently process 7.02 million confirmed payments every second.
Further testing will be necessary to determine how the execution model performs under realistic conditions.

<h2 id="what-project-thruput-means-for-stellar-and-xlm">What Project Thruput Means for Stellar and XLM</h2>
The introduction of Stellar Project Thruput could strengthen Stellar’s long-term position in blockchain-based payments.
High transaction capacity is particularly important for financial applications that need to process large numbers of transfers quickly and efficiently.
If the technology proves reliable, it could support future payment services, stablecoin transactions and other high-volume financial applications.
The project may also attract interest from developers exploring blockchain infrastructure for large-scale operations.
However, there is currently no confirmed timeline for bringing Project Thruput to Stellar’s mainnet.
The announcement also does not establish how the technology will affect transaction fees or the price of Stellar’s native token, XLM.
For now, the focus remains on testing the execution model and evaluating its practical limitations.
Stellar’s early 7.02 million payments-per-second benchmark is an encouraging technical achievement, but real-world adoption will depend on further development and testing.
If successful, Project Thruput could help demonstrate how distributed execution can improve blockchain scalability without relying on a single machine’s processing power.
