The series arrives after Bankman-Fried was convicted of multiple felony charges connected to the misuse of customer funds, and while the story of FTX continues to reverberate across culture, politics, and crypto regulation.
In a Vanity Fair report published Wednesday, actor Anthony Boyle—cast to play Bankman-Fried—said he contacted the imprisoned former executive while preparing for the role. The interaction, as described by the outlet, provides a rare window into how the actor approached portraying a figure whose public narrative was shaped as much by courtroom outcomes as by the marketing and mythology that surrounded FTX at its peak.

According to Vanity Fair, Boyle contacted Bankman-Fried via email while preparing for The Altruists. In the report, Boyle says he “promised him that [he] wouldn’t divulge anything,” suggesting the communication stayed within the boundaries of role research rather than becoming public material on a one-to-one basis.
Vanity Fair further reports that Bankman-Fried answered the majority of Boyle’s questions ahead of the series’ release. Boyle’s interest, as quoted by the outlet, was less about crypto technicalities and more about psychology and motivation—specifically what drives a person to pursue a path that leads to extraordinary wealth at a young age.
For investors, traders, and builders, the relevance isn’t just entertainment value. When high-profile crypto events are dramatized, the choices made by writers and performers can shape how the public understands mechanisms like customer fund custody, corporate controls, and executive decision-making. Even when audiences know the legal outcomes, dramatizations can influence what details they remember—and which explanations they trust.
<h2 id="what-the-trailer-suggests-about-the-focus">What the trailer suggests about the focus</h2>
Based on a Netflix trailer released Oct. 8, the series appears to center on the relationship between Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, described in the reporting as a colleague and girlfriend who led FTX’s sister firm, Alameda Research. That narrative emphasis matters because Ellison’s role has been central to how many observers explain both the internal operations of the empire and the events that preceded its collapse.
In the U.S. legal fallout, Bankman-Fried was convicted on seven felony counts tied to misuse of customer funds at FTX and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Ellison, meanwhile, was released in January after serving more than a year under a plea agreement with U.S. authorities, according to the same Vanity Fair account.
The series’ approach—framing the story around personal dynamics alongside corporate decision-making—underscores a tension that has followed FTX since the downfall: the tendency to interpret systemic failures through individual character traits. Viewers may come away with either a clearer sense of how people behave under incentives, or a simplified explanation that obscures the structural compliance failures regulators and courts ultimately focused on.
<h2 id="pushback-from-within-the-ftx-story">Pushback from within the FTX story</h2>
Not everyone involved in the FTX narrative agrees on how the public should understand the characters on screen. Vanity Fair’s report cites former FTX COO Constance Wang, who said the on-screen portrayal made her feel “physically upset.” In her critique, Wang suggested that Bankman-Fried was more “socially awkward” than Boyle’s depiction conveys.
This kind of reaction is significant because it highlights a recurring issue in dramatizations of financial scandals: reconciling performance with lived experience. For audiences seeking to interpret a real-world failure, tone and body language can become substitutes for substance—shaping perceptions of personality in ways that may not align with internal understanding.
While Wang’s comments do not alter the legal record of convictions and sentencing, they do serve as a reminder that dramatization is not a transcript. For readers tracking crypto’s ongoing relationship with mainstream media, it’s worth separating what the courts established from what a series chooses to dramatize for storytelling purposes.
<h2 id="why-this-is-one-of-the-first-major-tv-dramatizations-of-sbf">Why this is one of the first major TV dramatizations of SBF</h2>
Prior coverage of Bankman-Fried has extended across multiple formats, but The Altruists represents a step toward mainstream television drama focused specifically on FTX’s leadership. As noted in the Vanity Fair report, Bankman-Fried has been covered widely by media outlets, including the subject of Michael Lewis’ 2023 book Going Infinite. The book and its associated discourse helped keep the FTX story in the broader cultural conversation after the collapse.
Additionally, Ben McKenzie’s documentary Everyone Is Lying to You for Money included a 2022 interview with the former CEO before the exchange’s downfall. However, the Vanity Fair report indicates there had not been another major dramatization of SBF or FTX for film or television until The Altruists.
That gap helps explain why the release is drawing attention from crypto participants and skeptics alike. Media portrayals can affect how younger audiences understand the so-called “crypto era” that preceded FTX—whether as a cautionary tale of greed and incentives, a story of engineering and ambition, or a caution about governance failures in fast-moving financial technology.

With The Altruists arriving shortly, the key question for viewers who follow crypto beyond the headlines is how the series balances personal narrative with the operational realities behind FTX’s collapse. The legal outcomes are already established; what remains to watch is whether the dramatization adds meaningful clarity—or replaces it with a version of the story shaped more by character arcs than by compliance and control failures.
