The series is expected to land in roughly three weeks, extending public scrutiny of the exchange’s events into a new medium—drama.

According to a Vanity Fair report, actor Anthony Boyle—who portrays Bankman-Fried—said he contacted the former CEO in prison ahead of production and received answers to many of his questions. The series, Netflix has previously previewed, appears to focus heavily on the personal and professional relationship between Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, who led FTX’s sister firm Alameda Research.

Key takeaways

Netflix’s upcoming series The Altruists is set to dramatize key elements of the FTX saga after Bankman-Fried’s conviction and sentencing.

Vanity Fair reports that Anthony Boyle contacted Bankman-Fried by email while preparing for the role, with Bankman-Fried answering most questions.

Earlier Netflix marketing and a trailer preview have indicated the show centers on Bankman-Fried’s relationship with Caroline Ellison.

Executives from the FTX era have already criticized how characters are depicted, with former FTX COO Constance Wang saying she felt physically upset by the portrayal.

Beyond this series, major big-screen or TV dramatizations of SBF/FTX have been limited, despite extensive coverage in books and documentaries.

A prison email exchange shaped the portrayal

Vanity Fair’s report says Anthony Boyle contacted Sam Bankman-Fried while preparing to play him in The Altruists. The publication reports that Boyle told Bankman-Fried he had no plans to disclose information, and that the former CEO responded to the majority of the actor’s questions.

Boyle characterized his interest as less about finance or crypto and more about motivation—what drives someone to pursue an extraordinary level of influence and wealth. He is quoted by Vanity Fair saying he was more focused on “what possessed someone to become the world’s youngest billionaire” and less on the technicalities of money or crypto.

What Netflix’s trailer suggests about the story

Based on a trailer released by Netflix on Oct. 8, The Altruists appears to place significant emphasis on the relationship between Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison. Ellison served as chief executive of Alameda Research, which was closely tied to FTX’s ecosystem.

The wider real-world context is central to why this dramatization is likely to draw attention. Bankman-Fried was convicted on seven felony counts connected to the misuse of customer funds at FTX and was later sentenced to 25 years in prison. Ellison, meanwhile, was released in January after serving more than a year under a plea arrangement with U.S. authorities—an outcome that has helped keep questions about roles, responsibility, and cooperation in focus.

Former FTX executive reacts to the dramatization

Not everyone connected to the firm’s executive ranks has been persuaded by the show’s framing. Former FTX COO Constance Wang, in earlier coverage, said the portrayal made her “feel physically upset.” She also argued that Bankman-Fried came across as more socially awkward than she believed the real person to be.

Wang’s reaction highlights a tension that often follows dramatizations of high-profile fraud cases: the difference between narrative interpretation and lived experience. For investors, traders, and builders who followed the FTX collapse, depictions that diverge from insiders’ memories can influence how audiences understand accountability—especially when the series presents characters without the same evidentiary constraints as court proceedings.

How this fits with prior coverage of SBF

While SBF has been widely covered since the collapse of FTX, large-scale dramatizations have been relatively limited. Vanity Fair’s report places The Altruists in a media landscape that already includes extensive reporting, along with major book and documentary attention.

Michael Lewis’ 2023 book Going Infinite has been one of the most notable literary accounts of Bankman-Fried and the rise-and-fall narrative. In addition, Ben McKenzie’s documentary Everyone Is Lying to You for Money included a 2022 interview with Bankman-Fried prior to FTX’s downfall. Still, until The Altruists, there had not been another major television or big-screen dramatization focused on SBF or FTX.

As a result, this Netflix release may function less like a replacement for reporting and more like a consolidation of storylines for audiences who may not have followed the trial coverage in detail. That can raise the stakes for accuracy of characterization—even when the series takes inevitable creative liberties inherent to drama.

What to watch after release

In the run-up to Netflix’s premiere, viewers and market observers are likely to pay close attention not only to which events are highlighted, but also to how the show balances relationship-driven storytelling with the legal and financial substance behind FTX’s collapse. The unanswered question will remain whether The Altruists clarifies motivations for new audiences—or mostly reframes them through the lens of dramatization—until critics and the people closest to the events weigh in.
