Bitcoin mining company Canaan says its Nordic district-heating project is now fully operational, using recovered computing heat to provide heating for approximately 2,800 homes.
The project represents a practical example of how energy-intensive Bitcoin mining infrastructure can be integrated into local energy systems rather than operating as a standalone consumer of electricity.
Canaan disclosed the milestone in its latest <a href="https://canaan.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/canaan-inc-provides-september-2026-bitcoin-production-and-mining" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">September 2026 Bitcoin production and mining update</a>.
The company also reported that it mined 44 BTC during September and ended the month holding 1,875 BTC on its balance sheet.

The Nordic district-heating project operates at approximately 8 MW and captures heat produced by Canaan's computing infrastructure.
Instead of allowing that heat to dissipate into the surrounding environment, the system redirects it into a local heating network.
Canaan says the project is now delivering recovered heat to around 2,800 homes. (<a href="https://canaan.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/canaan-inc-provides-september-2026-bitcoin-production-and-mining" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Canaan</a>)
Heat reuse has become an increasingly important topic for Bitcoin miners operating in colder regions.
ASIC miners generate large amounts of heat while performing the calculations required to secure the Bitcoin network.
In a traditional mining facility, that heat must be removed through ventilation or cooling.
In district-heating systems, the same thermal output can instead become a usable energy product.
<h2 id="bitcoin-mining-creates-a-constant-heat-source">Bitcoin Mining Creates a Constant Heat Source</h2>
Bitcoin miners operate continuously as long as electricity costs and network economics allow them to remain profitable.
That makes mining facilities a relatively predictable source of heat.
Unlike many industrial processes that operate only during certain hours, mining equipment can produce a steady thermal load.
This characteristic makes it potentially useful for district heating, greenhouses and other applications requiring consistent low- or medium-temperature heat.
Canaan is also developing a separate heat-recovery project in Canada for greenhouse use.
The company said that deployment is moving toward implementation once remaining site inspections are completed. (<a href="https://canaan.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/canaan-inc-provides-september-2026-bitcoin-production-and-mining" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Canaan</a>)
<h2 id="canaan-mines-44-btc-in-september">Canaan Mines 44 BTC in September</h2>
Alongside the energy project update, Canaan reported 44 BTC of mining production in September.
That was unchanged from August.
The company ended the month with 1,875 BTC held on its balance sheet.
Canaan's non-joint-venture installed hashrate remained at 10 EH/s, while joint-venture operations contributed another 4.87 EH/s of installed capacity.
Its operating hashrate at joint-venture sites stood at 4.18 EH/s.
The company also reported an average all-in power cost of approximately $0.043 per kWh during September. (<a href="https://canaan.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/canaan-inc-provides-september-2026-bitcoin-production-and-mining" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Canaan</a>)
These figures highlight how energy cost remains one of the most important variables in Bitcoin mining profitability.
<h2 id="mining-economics-depend-on-more-than-bitcoin-price">Mining Economics Depend on More Than Bitcoin Price</h2>
Bitcoin price receives most of the attention when evaluating mining companies, but miners operate as energy businesses as much as crypto businesses.
Revenue depends on several factors including Bitcoin price, block rewards, network difficulty, hashrate and transaction fees.
Costs are dominated by electricity, infrastructure and hardware depreciation.
A miner paying significantly more for electricity than competitors can become unprofitable even when Bitcoin prices remain relatively strong.
This is why miners increasingly seek ways to monetize infrastructure beyond Bitcoin production.
Recovered heat is one example.
Demand-response programs, energy sales and AI or high-performance computing are others.
<h2 id="heat-reuse-could-improve-mining-economics">Heat Reuse Could Improve Mining Economics</h2>
A mining facility normally treats heat as waste.
If that heat can instead generate revenue or reduce local heating costs, the economics of the facility change.
The miner still earns revenue from Bitcoin production.
But the same electricity input can also create value through heat recovery.
This does not make mining energy-free.
The mining hardware still consumes electricity.
What changes is the efficiency with which the energy is ultimately used.
In colder climates, that difference can be meaningful because heating demand remains high for much of the year.
<h2 id="nordic-countries-are-well-suited-to-mining-heat-recovery">Nordic Countries Are Well Suited to Mining Heat Recovery</h2>
Northern Europe provides several advantages for this type of project.
Cooler ambient temperatures reduce the cost of cooling mining infrastructure.
District-heating networks are also more common in Nordic countries than in many other regions.
Those networks already distribute centrally produced heat to residential and commercial buildings.
A mining facility located near such infrastructure can therefore become another heat source feeding into the same system.
This is significantly easier than attempting to build an entirely new heating network around a mining site.
Canaan's 8 MW project demonstrates how Bitcoin mining facilities can fit into existing energy infrastructure rather than operating independently from it.
<h2 id="bitcoin-miners-are-diversifying-their-energy-strategies">Bitcoin Miners Are Diversifying Their Energy Strategies</h2>
Canaan is not the only mining company rethinking the relationship between computing and energy.
CleanSpark, for example, has increasingly expanded into large-scale data-center infrastructure while maintaining Bitcoin mining operations.
Its September update showed that the company mined 529 BTC, down from 593 BTC in August, while also highlighting a $2.276 billion financing package for its Sandersville data-center campus. (<a href="https://investors.cleanspark.com/news/news-details/2026/CleanSpark-Releases-September-2026-Operational-Update/default.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">CleanSpark</a>)
Another miner, PowerCompute, has been monetizing electricity through grid sales.
The company reported approximately $312,000 in energy-sales revenue during the three months ending September 30 and said it can choose between mining Bitcoin, selling power or allocating capacity to HPC and AI workloads depending on expected returns. (<a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/september-2026-bitcoin-production-and-operational-update-2026-10-08" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Nasdaq</a>)
These strategies reflect a broader shift in the industry.
Mining companies increasingly treat electricity access as the core asset.
Bitcoin mining becomes one possible use of that power rather than the only one.
<h2 id="hashprice-shows-signs-of-recovery">Hashprice Shows Signs of Recovery</h2>
Canaan also said Bitcoin hashprice continued recovering during September.
Hashprice measures how much revenue miners can earn from a unit of computing power.
It is affected by Bitcoin price, network difficulty, transaction fees and block rewards.
When hashprice falls, miners with older hardware or higher energy costs can quickly become unprofitable.
When it rises, more machines become economically viable.
Canaan described September's improvement as encouraging while still emphasizing disciplined cost management. (<a href="https://canaan.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/canaan-inc-provides-september-2026-bitcoin-production-and-mining" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Canaan</a>)
<h2 id="mining-heat-could-become-a-strategic-asset">Mining Heat Could Become a Strategic Asset</h2>
The Nordic project illustrates an important shift in how Bitcoin mining infrastructure is evaluated.
The question is no longer only how many bitcoins a facility can produce.
It is increasingly also about what else can be done with the electricity, land, power connections and thermal output associated with the site.
Heat reuse will not work everywhere.
It depends on climate, nearby infrastructure and local demand.
But where those conditions exist, mining heat can become a second product rather than a waste stream.
For Canaan, the Nordic deployment gives the company a real-world example of that model at commercial scale.
The company is still fundamentally a Bitcoin mining and computing business.
But projects like this suggest that the future economics of mining may increasingly depend on how effectively operators integrate their facilities into wider energy systems.
