Why would a crypto project vote to stop creating its own coin? Osmosis just did, with about 91% support.
If you're asking what is Osmosis crypto, here's the short version. It's a <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-is-decentralized-exchange-will-replace-centralized-exchanges" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">decentralized exchange</a> (DEX), meaning a trading app where no company holds your funds. It runs on its own blockchain, and its token, OSMO, pays network fees, secures the chain and lets holders vote.
On October 26, 2026, holders ended new OSMO issuance. This guide on what is Osmosis crypto explains how the exchange works, why emissions stopped, and what could go wrong.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-is-osmosis-crypto-osmosis-in-plain-english-span-span">What Is Osmosis Crypto? Osmosis in Plain English</h2>
To understand what is <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/osmosis-dex-guide-cross-chain-trading-osmo-tokenomics" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Osmosis crypto</a>, picture a trading floor for the Cosmos network. Cosmos is a group of independent blockchains that can talk to each other. The standard that lets them send tokens back and forth is IBC, short for Inter-Blockchain Communication.
Osmosis launched after IBC went live. The project's code page says it serves liquidity to over 50 connected chains.
So what is Osmosis crypto in one line? A cross-chain exchange plus the token that runs it.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-does-the-osmosis-dex-work-across-cosmos-chains-span-span">How Does the Osmosis DEX Work Across Cosmos Chains?</h2>
Still asking what is Osmosis crypto at the trading level? It swaps tokens through liquidity pools instead of an order book. A liquidity pool is a shared pot of two tokens that traders swap against. People who fill the pot earn a cut of the fees.
Osmosis offers several pool types:
<ul>
 <li>Classic pools use the standard automated market maker formula.</li>
 <li>Stableswap pools suit coins that should trade near the same price.</li>
 <li>Concentrated <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-are-liquidity-pools-and-how-they-work-in-defi" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">liquidity pools</a> let providers pick a price range.</li>
 <li>CosmWasm pools run smart contracts, including an on-chain order book.</li>
</ul>
You don't pick a pool yourself, because a router splits your trade across pools for a better price. This interchain DEX also takes in assets from outside Cosmos, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, according to the project.
Two built-in tools matter for the vote. The taker fee is a small charge on every swap that goes to the protocol. ProtoRev captures arbitrage profit, the price gap between pools. The OSMO it earns is burned, meaning permanently destroyed. Other tokens it earns go to the community pool, the chain's shared treasury.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-osmo-token-utility-gas-governance-and-liquidity-span-span">OSMO Token Utility: Gas, Governance and Liquidity</h2>
What is Osmosis crypto without OSMO? The token does three jobs.
<ul>
 <li>Gas:You pay network fees with it.</li>
 <li>Governance:Stakers vote on proposals. A proposal needs a<a href="https://docs.osmosis.zone/osmosis-core/modules/gov/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">30,000 OSMO deposit</a> to reach a vote. A standard vote runs five days and needs 30% turnout.</li>
 <li>Liquidity:OSMO sits on one side of many core pools, so traders often route through it.</li>
</ul>
Staking means locking <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/osmosis-osmo-burn-proposal-17-million-token-supply-burn" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">OSMO with a validator</a>, an operator that helps confirm blocks. Unstaking takes 14 days.
There used to be a fourth job. Superfluid staking let pool shares help secure the chain. Proposal 956 ended it after only about 39,000 OSMO used it, roughly 0.011% of staking security.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-osmosis-emissions-change-explained-why-the-era-is-ending-span-span">Osmosis Emissions Change Explained: Why the Era Is Ending</h2>
Emissions are new tokens a chain mints on a schedule. Early on, they pay stakers and liquidity providers to show up. The catch is dilution. Every new token shrinks everyone else's share.
Anyone learning what is Osmosis crypto should know the project planned for this. Its original schedule cut issuance by a third at set intervals, a step called the Thirdening. Later votes halved daily emissions. Proposal 954 removed liquidity incentives from inflation, and Proposals 957 and 967 cut the staking share.
The split before the vote:

 </table>
</div>
The team counts about 91,324 OSMO a day as new minting. Community pool tokens stay out of circulation until a vote spends them. Staking rewards plus developer vesting put roughly 40,000 OSMO a day into circulation, about 14.6 million a year.
Proposal 1053 (<a href="https://www.mintscan.io/osmosis/proposals/1053" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">on-chain record</a>) switched the minting off. It passed with 91.07% support on roughly 65% turnout, and the first daily cycle afterward minted zero. For anyone studying what is Osmosis crypto, that's a new answer: zero issuance.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-revenue-vs-inflation-the-new-model-for-stakers-span-span">Revenue vs Inflation: The New Model for Stakers</h2>
So what is Osmosis crypto for stakers now? A fee-funded chain. Staking rewards come from fees alone. The proposal said inflation had added about 2 percentage points to the staking APR, the yearly reward rate. That slice is gone.
A separate vote, Proposal 1052, passed just before it. It raised the stakers' share of non-OSMO taker fees from 22.5% to 47.5%. The proposal estimated this adds back about 1.7 points.

 </tr>
 </tbody>
 </table>
</div>
With minting at zero and developer vesting paused, supply can only shrink through burns. The old 14.6 million yearly addition was roughly 2% of circulating supply. That dilution is off the table unless governance restarts it.
Here's the real test of what is Osmosis crypto as a business: can the exchange pay its own way? As of October 28, 2026, public dashboards show about $11 to $13 million in liquidity. Thirty-day trading volume is near $68 million. Annualized protocol revenue looks like $1.4 to $1.8 million, depending on the tracker.
The merger proposal cited about $5.5 million for 2025. Critics said that overstated what's repeatable. The proposal's author argued OSMO already burned more than it issued into circulation last year. That's a project claim, and the burn totals aren't verified here.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-is-osmo-a-good-token-risks-and-competition-explained-span-span">Is OSMO a Good Token? Risks and Competition Explained</h2>
Nobody can answer that for you. It depends on your goals and risk limits. What is Osmosis crypto's biggest weak spot? Revenue.
<ul>
 <li>Thin revenue. Fees are now the whole reward budget. If volume falls, staker income falls with it.</li>
 <li>Security cushion. With about 2 points of APR gone, some holders may unstake. A smaller stake means less security.</li>
 <li>Concentration. Governance wants a 30-validator set. Fewer operators speed up upgrades but leave fewer parties guarding the chain.</li>
 <li>Reversible rules. Another vote could restart minting or free the 51.9 million locked developer tokens.</li>
 <li>Price swings. OSMO rose almost 19% in a day after the vote, to about $0.053.</li>
</ul>
So what is Osmosis crypto up against? Bigger exchanges on Ethereum and Solana hold far more liquidity. Rival venues on other Cosmos chains chase the same IBC traders. Osmosis holders approved a merger into the Cosmos Hub, but Hub voters rejected it in April 2026.

What is Osmosis crypto's market footprint? Here's a snapshot from the same dashboard.

 <td>About $53&nbsp;million</td>
 </tr>
 <tr>
 <td>Fully diluted value (FDV)</td>
 <td>About $60 million</td>
 </tr>
 </tbody>
 </table>
</div>
Market cap is price times circulating supply, while FDV is price times the maximum supply. Neither measures what the project is worth.
Simple math puts market cap at roughly 26 to 34 times annualized revenue. That's arithmetic, not a verdict.
Anyone asking what is Osmosis crypto after the vote should track four things. Watch staking rewards paid, monthly fee revenue, total OSMO burned, and any new vote on developer tokens. The vote shows intent. Those numbers will show results. Our<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/osmosis-news-osmo-inflation-zero-proposal-1053-passes" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Osmosis News report</a> has the details.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-conclusion-span-span">Conclusion</h2>
So, what is Osmosis crypto today? It's a cross-chain DEX whose token now pays stakers from fees, not new coins. The 91% vote and zero issuance stand out. The answer to what is Osmosis crypto now rests on fee income. Whether fees can fund staking security remains uncertain. Check burn totals, staking rewards and the next developer-token vote.
