Microsoft Extends Voluntary Exit Offers

Microsoft announced the buyout program on Monday as part of its efforts to reshape its organization. The offer reportedly covers employees in Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Staff at level 70 and below qualify, and that range includes some senior personnel.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief people officer, explained the initiative in an employee memo. She linked the voluntary offer to the company’s evolving approach to organizational change. Additionally, Coleman described greater flexibility and more employee choice as central elements of the program.

The announcement identifies roughly 60,000 employees as potential recipients of buyout offers across the four countries. However, that figure describes the offer’s scope and does not establish an actual departure count. The company presented the program as an option for employees considering their next career steps.

Earlier Retirement Program Provides Context

Microsoft launched its first voluntary retirement program in May, several months before the latest workforce announcement. That earlier initiative offered eligible staff between eight and 39 weeks of base pay. The company based those retirement packages on employees’ positions and their length of service.

The May announcement concerned retirement, while Monday’s announcement outlined a broader voluntary exit offer for employees. Consequently, the earlier payment range describes the retirement initiative rather than establishing the latest program’s terms. The supplied announcement does not detail payout amounts for employees considering the current buyout offer.

Meanwhile, Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on capital expenditures during 2026, largely supporting artificial intelligence investments. The company continues to reshape its organization alongside that planned spending on its business infrastructure. Its Wednesday earnings release will include another update on capital expenditure plans and Azure cloud growth.

Microsoft Shares Reverse Morning Decline

Microsoft stock rose on Monday after the buyout announcement, but shares declined during Tuesday morning trading. The chart then showed a sharp recovery from below $529 to above the previous close. At $533.15, Microsoft gained $0.55 against its prior closing price of $532.60 during the session.

The rebound brought shares toward $534, although the chart showed the price remaining below that level. Subsequently, another market snapshot placed Microsoft shares at $533.73, up $1.14, or 0.21%, during trading. That later quote carried a timestamp of 6:40:21 p.m. GMT+3, and the market remained open.

The two snapshots therefore describe different moments during Tuesday’s session, and neither represents a closing price. The earlier reading showed a smaller daily gain than the later reading in the supplied figures. Microsoft enters its scheduled Wednesday report after those price swings and Monday’s voluntary buyout announcement.
