Crypto, which was supposed to make financial middlemen optional, is today run by centralized exchanges, prime brokers, stablecoin issuers, and asset managers. This isn’t necessarily a failure of blockchain, but it reveals how global finance actually operates.&nbsp;
Intermediaries exist because market friction does not vanish when transactions move on-chain. Trades still need deep liquidity, fiat must be converted to digital tokens, and someone has to handle credit risk, maintain servers, or resolve disputes when a deal fails.
The key question isn’t whether crypto can operate without institutions. The key is to identify which intermediary functions software, markets, and users can replace, and which still require institutions.&nbsp;
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-why-financial-intermediaries-exist-in-the-first-place-span">Why Financial Intermediaries Exist in the First Place</h2>
Traditional financial intermediaries solve several economic problems at once, such as collecting deposits, assessing borrowers, transforming maturities, managing liquidity, and diversifying credit risk. Brokers aggregate orders and provide market access, while custodians safeguard assets and maintain records, enabling crypto financial intermediation that keeps returning.
<a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://defi-planet.com/2021/08/introduction-to-blockchain-technology-overview-working-principle-properties/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Blockchain</a> can change who performs these functions, but it does not automatically eliminate the underlying need. The BIS <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.bis.org/publications/paper-156-cryptocurrencies-and-decentralised-finance-functions-and-financial-stability-implications" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">reached</a> a similar conclusion in its 2025 analysis of crypto and DeFi, finding that DeFi attempts to replicate many of the economic functions of traditional finance while creating new forms of information asymmetry, market inefficiency, and financial-stability risk.&nbsp;
If a <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://defi-planet.com/2022/07/smart-contracts-in-blockchain-technology-what-they-are-why-they-matter/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">smart contract</a> automatically liquidates collateral, the intermediary has not necessarily disappeared. One function previously performed by a bank employee or risk department has been converted into code, and that is ultimately an intermediation by infrastructure rather than by an institution.

<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-how-exchanges-recreated-brokerage-and-custody-span">How Exchanges Recreated Brokerage and Custody</h2>
Bitcoin showed that two people could transfer value without a bank maintaining a central ledger between them, but buying and selling Bitcoin at scale created another problem: liquidity. Most users don’t want to find a counterparty every time they trade; they just need an interface for price discovery, execution, liquidity, and often custody.
That explains why crypto relies on centralized exchanges even though blockchains support peer-to-peer transactions. As of June 30, 2026, Coinbase <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://investor.coinbase.com/home/default.aspx?" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">reported</a> $246 billion in assets on its platform and 10.3% of crypto trading-volume market share, meaning its institutional business offers trading, custody, and prime-brokerage services. A centralized exchange that can combine brokerage, custody, settlement, financing, market access, and compliance into one platform already threatens the existential integrity of traditional systems.&nbsp;

While blockchain may provide the underlying asset and settlement infrastructure, users often choose to outsource the difficult parts. Self-custody gives users control but also transfers operational responsibility to them. When you lose a private key, there may be no bank to reverse the transaction. The same applies when you send assets to the wrong address: no customer-service department can recover them.
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-stablecoin-issuers-are-becoming-private-monetary-intermediaries-span">Stablecoin Issuers Are Becoming Private Monetary Intermediaries</h2>

<a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/categories/stablecoins" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">CoinGecko</a> puts total stablecoin market capitalization at roughly $293 billion in September 2026, while its Q2 data showed the market at $305.1 billion at the end of June. USDC alone had about $75.2 billion in circulation on September 24, 2026, backed by about $75.5 billion in reserves, <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.circle.com/transparency" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">according</a> to Circle.&nbsp;
These issuers perform functions that look increasingly monetary, raising questions about how stablecoins act like private bank notes. A customer gives an issuer dollars; the issuer creates tokens; those tokens circulate through wallets, exchanges, payment applications, and DeFi protocols. The issuer then manages the reserve assets supporting redemption.
In some respects, these issuers do behave like banks, and while a stablecoin represents a private-sector claim designed to maintain a stable value against a reference currency, the comparison to commercial bank deposits has limits. A conventional bank deposit sits on a bank’s balance sheet and can support lending, while a fully reserved stablecoin, by contrast, is generally backed by specified reserve assets rather than a bank’s broader loan book.
A spectrum exists between money-like stablecoins designed for par redemption and stablecoins that function more like investment instruments. The closer a stablecoin gets to money, the more important reliable redemption, high-quality liquid reserves and credible liquidity arrangements become.

<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-the-problem-with-making-stablecoin-issuers-more-like-banks-span">The Problem With Making Stablecoin Issuers More Like Banks</h2>
Banks are heavily regulated because short-term liabilities combined with risky assets can create runs, and if millions of people believe a stablecoin is worth exactly $1, they need confidence they can redeem it when they want. The <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.fsb.org/2023/07/high-level-recommendations-for-the-regulation-supervision-and-oversight-of-global-stablecoin-arrangements-final-report/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Financial Stability Board</a> therefore recommends legal claims against issuers or reserve assets, timely redemption, stabilisation mechanisms and prudential requirements for global stablecoin arrangements.
The <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.imf.org/en/publications/wp/issues/2026/04/10/making-stablecoins-stable-575348" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">IMF’s 2026 research</a> goes further; its model finds that an unregulated private stablecoin equilibrium can be inefficient because issuers have incentives to hold riskier assets to increase profitability, increasing run risk. Requiring safer backing can improve stability, although it can also reduce issuer profitability and potentially weaken incentives for innovation, creating the central policy trade-off.
The safer a stablecoin becomes, the more it resembles a highly regulated monetary institution, but bank-like regulation also adds costs. If issuers must hold extremely safe, liquid assets, they may earn less income, and compliance often becomes more expensive. Smaller issuers may struggle to compete at this level, and product innovation could become slower.
There is also a deeper problem: should a private company issuing something used as money receive the same safety net as a bank?If it gains access to central-bank liquidity or other forms of public support, the private issuer may acquire privileges resembling a bank’s, but granting those privileges without equivalent supervision could create moral hazard. <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.bis.org/publ/arpdf/ar2026e.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Industry experts</a> warn that money-like stablecoins operating at scale may need credible backstops to contain runs and prevent destabilising reserve-asset sales, which is, quite literally, a banking problem.

<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-defi-lending-did-not-eliminate-banking-it-changed-the-mechanism-span">DeFi Lending Did Not Eliminate Banking. It Changed the Mechanism</h2>
DeFi versus traditional finance is particularly revealing in lending. A bank can lend against income, credit history, collateral, relationships, and its own assessment of a borrower, but a protocol like Aave operates quite differently. Aave’s lending markets generally require borrowers to <a style="color: #0000ff;" href="https://www.aave.com/docs/aave-101" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">provide collateral</a> worth more than the amount borrowed; its documentation describes this as overcollateralisation, with automated liquidation when a position becomes insufficiently collateralised.&nbsp;
A person with $10,000 in assets might be able to borrow $7,000 in DeFi without sitting across from a loan officer, but someone with no crypto collateral generally can’t get an equivalent unsecured personal loan just because a smart contract exists. The protocol automates the lending mechanism, but it hasn’t solved every problem banks traditionally handle. DeFi has replaced some credit assessment with collateral, making the system more transparent and programmable, but it also limits who can access credit.
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-why-users-give-up-decentralization-for-convenience-span">Why Users Give Up Decentralization for Convenience</h2>
Managing private keys, selecting networks, paying gas fees, understanding smart contracts, monitoring collateral ratios and protecting against phishing attacks all require time and expertise. Intermediaries package these complexities into products, and that is why giving up decentralization for convenience is not merely a philosophical question but a transaction-cost question.
Users routinely outsource tasks they could technically perform themselves: people could run their own email servers, but most don’t. They could host their own websites, but most don’t; and they could maintain their own financial infrastructure, but they won’t. Finance is no different; an intermediary’s existence does not automatically mean the intermediary is inefficient. The relevant question is whether the intermediary provides a service worth more than the cost and risk it introduces.
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-what-a-genuinely-intermediary-light-financial-system-could-look-like-span">What a Genuinely Intermediary-Light Financial System Could Look Like</h2>
An intermediary-light financial system would not mean a world without banks, exchanges or financial companies. It would mean fewer institutions controlling multiple financial functions simultaneously. A user might hold assets directly, transact through open protocols, borrow through automated collateral systems, move money using stablecoins and access regulated financial services without surrendering custody of everything to a single institution.
One company could provide compliance, another could provide custody, a smart contract could execute settlement, a decentralised market could provide liquidity, and a regulated institution could provide credit. The user’s assets wouldn’t necessarily need to sit inside one vertically integrated financial company, since that is a much more realistic way to think about how blockchain can eliminate financial middlemen entirely.
It probably cannot eliminate the economic functions of intermediation. It can, however, make those functions more transparent, programmable and contestable. The deeper lesson is that crypto didn’t discover intermediaries were unnecessary. It just discovered that intermediation itself can be decomposed. The future of finance may therefore not be completely decentralized or completely bank-based; it may be a modular system in which banks, stablecoin issuers, smart contracts, exchanges, liquidity providers and users each perform narrower functions. The middleman may not disappear, but the institution that once controlled the entire financial relationship could become only one component in a much more open financial system.
