The three firms will explore connecting tokenized money market funds to Japan's JPYSC stablecoin as onchain finance gains traction in the country.

BlackRock has entered into a memorandum of understanding with SBI Holdings and Startale, according to reports from The Block and CryptoBriefing. The agreement sets out a plan to explore connections between tokenized money market funds and JPYSC, a yen-denominated stablecoin.

The MOU does not commit the parties to a finished product. Instead, it establishes a framework for the three firms to study how tokenized traditional assets might interact with onchain settlement tools. Money market funds hold short-term, low-risk instruments and are widely used by institutions for cash management. Putting them on a blockchain, and tying them to a stablecoin, could let institutions move value between fund shares and digital cash more efficiently.

SBI Holdings is one of Japan's largest financial services groups and has pursued blockchain and digital asset projects for years. Startale is a Japan-focused blockchain infrastructure company. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has expanded its own tokenization efforts globally, including a tokenized fund product launched in other markets. Its involvement signals that major global managers see onchain settlement as relevant to Japan's regulated financial sector.

JPYSC is a yen-backed stablecoin intended to operate within Japan's regulatory framework for digital payment instruments. Japan updated its laws in recent years to create clearer rules for stablecoin issuance, requiring issuers to partner with licensed banks, trust companies, or money transfer agents. That framework has encouraged banks and fintech firms to pursue yen-denominated stablecoin projects rather than rely solely on dollar-pegged tokens issued abroad.

Linking a regulated money market fund to a stablecoin could give institutional users a way to hold yield-bearing assets while retaining the ability to settle transactions quickly onchain. This structure mirrors efforts seen in other markets, where tokenized funds are paired with stablecoins to bridge traditional asset management and blockchain-based settlement rails.

The reported MOU fits into a wider pattern of activity in Japan's digital asset sector. Financial institutions, technology firms and regulators have been working to build tokenization infrastructure that meets domestic compliance standards. BlackRock's participation, alongside an established domestic player in SBI and a blockchain-native firm in Startale, suggests coordination between global asset management expertise and local regulatory and technical knowledge.

No timeline for a commercial product has been disclosed in the available reporting. The arrangement remains at an exploratory stage, with the three parties set to study feasibility and structure before any product launch.

Market Impact

If the exploration leads to a working product, institutional investors in Japan could gain a new option for moving between yield-bearing fund shares and stablecoin-based settlement. That could support broader adoption of tokenized assets within Japan's regulated financial system.

The involvement of a global asset manager alongside established domestic institutions may also encourage other firms to pursue similar tokenization and stablecoin partnerships in the region. Any eventual product would still need to clear Japan's regulatory requirements for both fund structures and stablecoin issuance before reaching institutional users.

The MOU signals growing interest among major financial institutions in connecting tokenized traditional assets with yen stablecoins. Further details on structure, timing and regulatory approval are expected as the collaboration progresses.
