Demand from artificial intelligence is draining the supply of high-capacity hard drives, and @Filecoin is positioning its decentralized storage network as a way around the squeeze.
@Seagate, the world's largest hard drive maker, says most of its high-capacity data-center drive output is already allocated through 2028. Western Digital is also sold out for this year. Prices have followed, with data-center memory and storage drives costing more than twice as much as a year earlier, according to research firm Dell'Oro.

Seagate chief executive Dave Mosley told analysts that data center demand now represents about 90 percent of the company's exabyte shipments, according to The Register. He added that, based on long-term supply agreements, the vast majority of its nearline exabytes are allocated into calendar 2028.
Western Digital is in a similar position. Chief executive Irving Tan said on an earnings call that the company was "pretty much sold out" for 2026, with long-term agreements already in place with some customers for 2027 and 2028, Tom's Hardware reported. Seagate's own filings describe a strong demand environment in which customers are investing in data center infrastructure to support growing AI-related workloads, as set out in its Form 10-Q for the March 2026 quarter.
The effect is that new capacity is committed to large cloud buyers years in advance, leaving fewer drives for everyone else.

Filecoin's pitch: spare capacity, not new drives

Filecoin, the storage network behind $FIL, is pitching its spare room as the answer. The network offers online storage capacity today, rented by independent providers, so it does not depend on new drive orders to grow.
That argument rests on supply that already exists rather than hardware that must be manufactured and delivered. Whether it translates into meaningful demand will depend on pricing, reliability and whether buyers, including AI developers, are willing to use a decentralized network instead of the major cloud providers. Filecoin has not been shown here to be a direct substitute for the high-capacity drives that hyperscalers are reserving.
For now, the shortage gives decentralized storage networks a timely talking point. The longer drive makers remain sold out, the more attention alternative sources of capacity are likely to attract.
