Cetus Protocol Explained: Sui's Liquidity Layer and DEX
Cetus Protocol is a<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-is-decentralized-exchange-will-replace-centralized-exchanges" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">decentralized exchange</a> and liquidity platform built on the Sui blockchain.
Traders know it for its<a href="https://www.coingecko.com/learn/what-is-concentrated-liquidity" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> concentrated liquidity pools</a> and for the big exploit it suffered in May 2025.
New to DeFi? Start with the<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/defi" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">DeFi guide</a> and the crypto dictionary first, then come back here.
This guide covers what Cetus Protocol is, how it works, the features on offer, and the risks you should weigh.
The short version: you can swap tokens, supply liquidity inside a price range you pick, and set up automated trades, all on Sui. Under the hood sit concentrated liquidity, a swap aggregator, and a two-token reward system.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-is-cetus-protocol-span-span">What Is Cetus Protocol?</h2>
By its own description, <a href="https://www.cetus.zone/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Cetus Protocol</a> wants to make trading easy for every user and asset, with tools to swap, earn, and build.
Its homepage lists about $103 billion in trade volume, 18 million accounts, and 214 million trades.
None of these numbers come with a date, so read them as marketing claims rather than audited data.
<a href="https://sui.io/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The platform runs on Sui</a>, though a legacy Aptos version still sits on its resources page.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-it-works-span-span">How It Works</h2>
At its core is a concentrated liquidity market maker, or CLMM. <a href="https://app.cetus.zone/pools" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Liquidity providers</a> choose a price range rather than spreading funds across every possible price.
Money placed in a tight range does more work, and it earns fees whenever trades happen inside that band.
Here is how a typical swap on Cetus Protocol plays out:
<ol>
 <li>A user or app asks for a swap.</li>
 <li>The aggregator scans liquidity across the Sui ecosystem.</li>
 <li>The trade goes through the best available pools.</li>
 <li>Providers whose range is active collect the pool's fee tier.</li>
</ol>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-a-simple-example-span-span">A Simple Example</h2>
Say a provider adds liquidity to a pool between prices of 1.00 and 1.20. While the market trades inside that band, the position earns fees.
If the price jumps to 1.30, the position falls out of range. It then holds only one asset and earns nothing until the price comes back. The numbers are made up, just to show the mechanism.

That spread of tools is why Cetus Protocol is more than a basic swap page.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-cetus-vs-xcetus-span-span">CETUS vs. xCETUS</h2>
The site describes a dual-token setup, CETUS and xCETUS, that passes protocol earnings to active users as rewards.
How conversion, staking, and governance work is not verified here. Check the official documentation before acting on any token claim.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-the-may-2025-exploit-and-recovery-span-span">The May 2025 Exploit and Recovery</h2>
In May 2025, an attacker pulled about $223 million out of Sui-based pools. Reports point to spoofed tokens, flawed pricing logic, and a bug in third-party code. The precise root cause is best read in the project's own incident report.
Sui validators froze roughly $162 million of it. Validators holding 90.9% of the stake then voted in May to move those funds into a multisig for repayment.
Cetus Protocol relaunched in June 2025. Pools came back at 85% to 99% of their prior value, funded by recovered assets, reserves, and a $30 million loan from the Sui Foundation.
Reports also say 15% of the CETUS supply was set aside for compensation. The current status of that payout is not verified here.
Anyone sizing up Cetus Protocol should read this history. The validator freeze also set off a debate about how decentralized Sui really is.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-audits-and-security-span-span">Audits and Security</h2>
The site lists audits by Asymptotic, CertiK, MoveBit, OtterSec, and Zellic. After the incident, the team said fresh audits covered its patches. Audits lower risk, but they never remove it.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-where-it-fits-among-aggregators-span-span">Where It Fits Among Aggregators</h2>
Cetus Protocol does for Sui roughly what Jupiter does for Solana. The<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/jupiter-exchange-explained-solana-defi-aggregator-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Jupiter Exchange guide</a> shows how an aggregator sends one swap through many pools.
Press coverage also lists DeepBook and BlueFin among active Sui trading projects.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-to-get-started-safely-span-span">How to Get Started Safely</h2>
<ol>
 <li>Open the app only through the official site and verified social links.</li>
 <li>Read the documentation before you connect a wallet.</li>
 <li>Check every transaction and approval before signing.</li>
 <li>Start with a small swap.</li>
 <li>Understand price ranges and impermanent loss before you add liquidity.</li>
</ol>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-security-and-risk-checks-span-span">Security and Risk Checks</h2>
<ul>
 <li>Fake sites: copycats imitate popular DEXs, so verify every link.</li>
 <li>Wallet approvals: even a small transaction can hand over dangerous permissions.</li>
 <li>Smart contract risk: audits and patches reduce the chance of a bug but cannot rule one out.</li>
 <li>Impermanent loss: providers can end up with less than if they had simply held their tokens.</li>
 <li>Token volatility: CETUS dropped sharply after the exploit, according to reports. See the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/risks-of-trading-newly-listed-coins" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">risks of trading</a> newly listed coins.</li>
 <li>Cross-chain danger: the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/what-is-a-crypto-bridge-hack-and-guide-to-stay-safe" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto bridge hack</a> guide covers another common way attackers get in.</li>

</ul>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-final-thoughts-span-span">Final Thoughts</h2>
Cetus Protocol gives Sui users a full trading toolkit: aggregation, concentrated liquidity, automated orders, and a launchpad.
It suits traders who want control over price ranges and developers who want liquidity they can plug in.
The 2025 exploit is still part of the story, and every <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/best-ethereum-defi-platforms-and-protocols-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">DeFi platform</a> carries smart contract risk.
Readers who verify official links, start small, and learn how liquidity ranges work will be in a better position to judge Cetus Protocol fairly.
