TokenFi, the tokenisation platform backed by @Floki, has published a paper setting out how a water tokenisation model could work. The paper was released by @tokenfi roughly two days ago.

It covers three main areas: what a water-backed asset would actually represent, how redemption would work, and why water quality matters. The paper arrives as AI-driven data centre construction accelerates worldwide, raising fresh questions about water supply.

What TokenFi is building

TokenFi describes itself as an all-in-one tokenization platform for creating tokens and tokenizing assets in a few clicks. According to its documentation, TokenFi is a Floki project and is controlled by the Floki DAO, and its products are powered by $TOKEN as the main utility token. The platform includes a real-world asset (RWA) tokenisation module, and the project says it is targeting an industry projected to be a $16 trillion industry by 2030.

Water tokenisation is not a new idea in institutional circles. A Goldman Sachs report on water markets argues that tokenization can be used to turn rights into traceable tokens that track water use across market participants, according to a summary by LARA on the Block. The same summary says the report notes that the UAE is testing a water-backed digital token that links verified physical water volumes to a tradable digital asset.

There are caveats. One industry guide on tokenised water reuse notes that tokenisation does not automatically solve local water problems, and that blockchain-enabled water credits are only as impactful as the governance structures built around them.

Why data centres are part of the story

Data centres are a growing source of water demand. The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) says larger data centers can each "drink" up to 5 million gallons per day, and that water consumption is expected to continue increasing as data centers grow in number, size, and complexity.

A recent peer-reviewed study in Environmental Science & Technology found that 33% of currently identified data centers would be in regions experiencing water gaps under future hydrological conditions. The same paper says direct data centre water use is 313 to 764 billion liters per year, with projections that it could more than double by 2030.

Whether a tokenised water product can find real demand will depend on the details TokenFi has laid out: a clear claim on physical water, a workable redemption process and credible quality standards. Regulation of water rights also varies widely by jurisdiction, which could shape any real-world rollout. TokenFi has so far only published a paper, not a live product.

Is TokenFi looking to tokenise Water?!
