Artificial intelligence opens up new possibilities, but it also raises questions about the security of cryptocurrencies. Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya believes an AI-related cyberattack could one day compromise bitcoin and erase its value. This prediction renews the debate on the resilience of its cryptographic system against new technologies. At the same time, the investor explains why he now favors ETFs to gain market exposure without directly holding digital tokens.

During an interview broadcast on a podcast, Chamath Palihapitiya mentioned a scenario in which artificial intelligence would eventually compromise bitcoin’s security. According to him, the advances in AI systems could give hackers more powerful means to target cryptographic networks. He believes such an attack could cause an extreme decline in price. Under this hypothesis, the cryptocurrency could even lose all of its value.

The investor specifically points to risks related to the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, which plays a key role in network security. He imagines AI models capable of improving themselves could eventually exploit cryptographic flaws. According to his scenario, this development could enable attackers to access certain digital wallets. He also mentions wallets linked to Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of the network.

Palihapitiya also highlights dangers related to personal data leaks in the cryptocurrency world. Such information can expose investors to physical threats, including burglaries or kidnappings. He cites cases involving entrepreneurs and well-known investors in France. These risks show that security is not only about computer systems but also about protecting individuals.

Could a cyberattack cause the price to fall?

To explain the possible consequences of hacking, Palihapitiya describes a scenario in which an attacker would exploit the same flaw twice. They could first withdraw funds from compromised wallets and then bet on Bitcoin’s decline by short selling. The public revelation of the attack could then trigger a loss of confidence among investors. This reaction would increase market pressure and cause prices to drop.

The investor considers that the limited supply would not necessarily protect the asset against such a crisis. Even with a defined maximum quantity, a security failure could undermine trust in the network. However, his scenario remains a prediction and does not prove that an attack of this magnitude is feasible today. He mainly highlights the uncertainties linked to rapid advances in artificial intelligence.

Palihapitiya also believes the community faces challenges in preparing for a transition to cryptography resistant to future computing capabilities. According to him, divided priorities within the ecosystem would complicate this evolution. This issue places long-term security at the center of cryptocurrency debates. It also raises the need to anticipate new threats without confusing potential risks with already demonstrated vulnerabilities.

Why the investor now favors Bitcoin ETFs

Faced with these concerns, Chamath Palihapitiya states he no longer holds bitcoins directly. He prefers to use financial markets to maintain exposure to this asset without managing digital wallets himself. This approach aims especially to limit risks related to token storage and protection of private keys. It reflects his desire to separate financial investment from the technical management of cryptocurrencies.

The investor highlights the role of Bitcoin ETFs in providing market access to the general public. These products allow investing through stock markets, operating similarly to classic shares. Thus, individuals can experience price variations without directly managing their digital assets. This formula simplifies certain operations, even if it does not eliminate risks related to price evolution.

In the future, Palihapitiya’s concerns could draw more attention to cryptographic security and indirect investment solutions. Bitcoin will have to continue addressing questions raised by artificial intelligence and key protection. However, the real scale of these threats will depend on the emerging technical capabilities and the responses that industry players provide. For investors, security will thus remain an important factor in their choices.
