In 2016, Jack Clark was a Bloomberg journalist covering artificial intelligence, reporting on the researchers and companies developing increasingly powerful machines. A decade later, he was among the people building one of the world's most valuable AI businesses.
At 37, Clark has an estimated fortune of $15.5 billion, according to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/jack-clark/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Forbes</a>. His wealth comes from a founding stake in Anthropic, the company behind Claude, rather than a career spent developing AI models himself.
His path from technology reporter to billionaire illustrates an unusual side of Silicon Valley, where understanding emerging technology and shaping its public-policy direction can become as valuable as writing the software. From Reporting on AI to Joining OpenAI
Clark began his journalism career covering technology for publications including ZDNet and The Register, before joining Bloomberg in 2014.
He specialized in artificial intelligence while the field was still far from mainstream adoption. His reporting explored everything from neural networks to the growing influence of Google and other technology companies.
His former <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/authors/AR9W2-bWwKY/jack-clark" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bloomberg author archive</a> includes interviews with leading AI researchers and investigations into how increasingly capable systems could affect society.
In September 2016, Clark left journalism for OpenAI, where he eventually became policy director.
Rather than developing neural networks, his responsibilities involved communications, government relations, safety research and helping policymakers understand emerging AI capabilities.
He also launched Import AI, a newsletter examining artificial intelligence research and its broader consequences.
That interest in AI's economic effects continues today. Clark recently outlined Anthropic's <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37445/anthropic-says-ai-could-push-us-gdp-to-444-trillion-by-2030-but-its-modest-scenario-sees-341-trillion" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">economic scenarios</a>, including an aggressive projection of $44.4 trillion in U.S. GDP by 2030.How a Former Journalist Built a $15.5 Billion Fortune
In 2021, Clark joined six former OpenAI colleagues, including Dario and Daniela Amodei, to establish Anthropic.
The company positioned itself around the development of highly capable AI systems alongside research into their safety and societal consequences.
Over the following five years, Anthropic became one of the industry's most valuable private companies.
A May 2026 investment round raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, more than doubling the estimated fortunes of its seven cofounders.
Forbes estimates each founder owns slightly more than 1.6% of Anthropic, placing Clark's stake at approximately $15.5 billion.
The valuation has continued attracting attention as the company considers a potential <a href="https://coinpaper.com/36449/anthropic-ipo-filing-reveals-valuation-target-and-massive-ai-spending" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">public listing</a>.
However, Clark's billions are primarily equity wealth, not money sitting in a bank account. Their value depends on what investors are willing to pay for Anthropic shares.
That distinction matters as investors debate whether the company can justify its reported <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37457/anthropics-ipo-valuation-could-drop-500-billion-as-investors-reconsider-2-trillion-price-tag" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">$2 trillion IPO ambitions</a>.The Journalist Who Now Helps Shape AI Policy
Clark remains closely involved in the questions he once covered as a reporter.
He leads Anthropic's public-benefit research work, examining how increasingly powerful AI systems affect employment, government and society.
The company has also faced difficult decisions surrounding AI safety, with some <a href="https://coinpaper.com/35557/ai-researcher-who-worked-at-openai-and-anthropic-quits-warns-technology-could-kill-us-all" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">researchers warning</a> that rapid technological development may outpace available safeguards.
Meanwhile, Anthropic's enormous <a href="https://coinpaper.com/37348/anthropic-revenue-surges-45-to-168-billion-as-claude-maker-prepares-for-potential-2-trillion-ipo" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">revenue growth</a> has made it a serious commercial competitor to OpenAI.
Its expansion has also attracted potential investment from <a href="https://coinpaper.com/35693/nvidia-eyes-10b-anthropic-bet-in-what-could-be-historys-biggest-ipo" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Nvidia</a>, illustrating how quickly the company has entered the center of the global AI industry.
