The latest CFTC news centers on an Oct. 28 forum examining artificial intelligence in U.S. derivatives markets. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission released its agenda on Oct. 20. It named Hedera policy chief Nilmini Rubin among eight panelists. Regulators will discuss AI trading, market safeguards, and autonomous financial transactions.

The CFTC news release named Chairman Michael S. Selig as the forum’s keynote speaker. The agency scheduled the event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and plans a public livestream. Selig said the forum would examine emerging opportunities and risks. Its agenda announces no new rules.

CFTC News: Forum Targets Derivatives and Autonomous Trading

The first discussion will examine superintelligence in derivatives markets. It runs from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Moderator Greg Xethalis will guide questions about price discovery, risk management, and regulatory supervision. Participants will assess how advanced software could influence transactions and trading infrastructure.

The published CFTC news identifies a second panel focused on agentic trading, scheduled for 2:45 p.m. The discussion will examine computer agents capable of conducting financial transactions without instructions for every action. Panelists will consider how existing market rules apply when those agents act on behalf of customers.

Katherine Kirpatrick Bos will moderate the second session, according to the regulator’s agenda. The CFTC news agenda separates questions about autonomous decision-making from those concerning existing trading infrastructure. Responsibility for trading instructions, monitoring, and recordkeeping remains central to the planned debate.

Hedera Joins a Wider Group of Financial Technology Executives

Hedera’s Chief Policy Officer Nilmini Rubin appears on the official list alongside seven other participants. The roster includes Ornn co-founder Kush Bavaria and Architect founder Brett Harrison. Liquid Compute co-founder Ronit Jain and OneChronos co-founder Kelly Littlepage will also participate.

The latest CFTC news also identifies Tempo engineer Brendan Ryan and Innovation Council Action’s Nick Elliott. Andrew Kayiira will represent the Investment Company Institute’s technology and financial innovation division. The panel combines software builders, financial market specialists, and public policy representatives.

Hedera’s inclusion highlights the connections regulators are examining between blockchain infrastructure and autonomous finance. However, the meeting announcement does not describe a Hedera product trial or partnership. It also does not announce any endorsement of Hedera’s HBAR token.

The CFTC news agenda explicitly separates participation from agency support for products or organizations. That distinction matters amid social media speculation linking regulatory appearances with digital asset adoption.

CFTC News: Existing AI Obligations Shape Policy Debate

The forum follows a broader effort to review technology across regulated markets. In March, Selig established the Innovation Task Force to consider crypto assets, autonomous systems, and prediction markets. Michael J. Passalacqua leads the group and will deliver opening remarks at the forum.

The September announcement created the Frontier Forum series as a channel for public and industry discussion. CFTC news subsequently moved from the series announcement to a detailed speaker roster in October. The agency identified customer protection and market resilience as central considerations throughout the process.

Regulators already have a framework for assessing certain uses of artificial intelligence. In December 2024, CFTC staff reminded registered firms that existing obligations apply when they deploy AI. Its advisory covered responsibilities under the Commodity Exchange Act and agency regulations.

That guidance did not establish a separate licensing regime for autonomous agents. The current CFTC news therefore concerns policy questions rather than an announced replacement for existing requirements. Companies remain accountable for applicable obligations even when software performs operational tasks.

What the October Forum Could Mean for AI Trading

The central question involves how regulators should treat agents executing transactions on behalf of market participants. Existing rules can address supervised AI trading, but autonomous tools raise practical questions about control. Firms may face disputes about who authorized a trade or monitored an automated strategy.

The latest CFTC news offers no timetable for proposed rules following the event. Officials have scheduled a discussion of market impacts, risk controls, and the agency’s potential supervisory role. Any later regulatory proposal would require separate action and documentation.

Investors should avoid treating the forum as confirmation of HBAR adoption or price support. This article provides information, not investment advice, and digital assets carry substantial risks.

CFTC news will become more substantive if officials publish guidance, proposals, or documented findings after Oct. 28. Until then, the confirmed development is the agenda and its questions about autonomous financial markets.
