Ethereum

BTC is bitcoin on its own blockchain: if you hold the keys, nobody stands between you and the coins. WBTC is an Ethereum token backed 1:1 by bitcoin that a custodian keeps in reserve. It lets bitcoin work inside Ethereum apps, and the cost is trust in a custodian, a group of merchants and a smart contract. Custody has moved in stages since 2024: under a plan announced in March 2026, BiT Global holds two of the three vault keys and BitGo keeps the third in the US, and in October 2026 WBTC said it is looking at spreading the reserve across several custodians. Coinbase’s cbBTC and Threshold’s tBTC rely on different trust setups.

To get WBTC, ChangeNOW is our pick. There’s no account or merchant onboarding, you see the WBTC amount before sending BTC, and the company reports an average standard exchange time of about one minute. It has operated since 2017, lists 1,500+ assets across 110 blockchains and serves more than 10 million customers with 24/7 support. Account-free doesn’t mean KYC-free, so compliance checks may still apply.

How Are BTC and WBTC Different at a Glance?

BTC lives on the Bitcoin blockchain, and once you hold the keys it answers to that network and to you. WBTC is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, issued against bitcoin held in reserve, one token for one coin. Both follow bitcoin’s price. With WBTC, though, you also depend on the custodian, the merchants who mint and redeem the token, and a smart contract.

People keep BTC in cold storage or send it across the Bitcoin network. Ethereum lending markets and liquidity pools can’t take native BTC at all, and the wrapped token was created so bitcoin could be used there.

Each asset pays fees on its own network. Sending BTC costs a Bitcoin network fee. Moving WBTC costs gas in ETH, which catches people out the first time they open an empty Ethereum wallet and find they can’t send anything.

How We Compared BTC and the Wrapped Options

To answer the BTC vs WBTC question with something concrete, we set native BTC against the three wrapped versions you’re most likely to run into on Ethereum: WBTC, cbBTC and tBTC. We checked each one against issuer announcements, official documentation and major crypto media as of October 20, 2026, using five criteria:

Chain: where the asset lives.

Custody (qualitative): who controls the bitcoin behind the token.

Access: how you get in and out, and whether KYC is part of it.

Published conversion fees, where the issuer states them.

Track record (qualitative): launch date and events that affected holders.

Custody and track record can’t be put into numbers, so the table describes them in a few words and gives no score.

How Do BTC, WBTC, cbBTC and tBTC Compare?

All three wrappers follow bitcoin’s price on Ethereum, and custody is where they split. WBTC uses a multisig shared by two companies, cbBTC relies on Coinbase alone, and tBTC uses a rotating group of node operators. Native BTC needs none of these parties, though it can’t go into an Ethereum app until it’s wrapped.

WBTC has been around since January 2019, longer than either of the other wrappers. Its weak point is custody, since under the March 2026 plan one company holds two of the three keys. With cbBTC you trust Coinbase, and tBTC spreads trust across rotating operators for a published fee. If your app accepts this token, you can get it without signing up as a merchant client.

For users moving between native Bitcoin and Wrapped Bitcoin, theBTC/WBTC converter on ChangeNOW shows the available quote before the swap is started. The service pays WBTC out on Ethereum, has fixed and floating rates, and the minimum is usually around $2 worth of BTC.

What Is Wrapped Bitcoin?

Wrapped Bitcoin is an ERC-20 token that tracks bitcoin one to one. It launched on Ethereum on January 31, 2019, as a project led by Kyber Network, BitGo and Ren, and BitGo was its only custodian at first. Every token is supposed to have one bitcoin in reserve behind it. Ordinary users don’t mint it. Merchants do, and anyone who deals with a merchant directly goes through KYC.

According toBitcoin Magazine, the launch-era process went like this. A merchant sent bitcoin to the custodian and filed a minting request with an Ethereum smart contract. The custodian waited for six confirmations on the Bitcoin chain before approving it. Minting and burning happened between merchant and custodian, and the user settled with the merchant. Eight merchants handled conversions at the start. By late 2022, BitGo CEO Mike Belshe put the number of authorized merchants at about 20.

How Does WBTC Differ from Native Bitcoin?

BTC in your own wallet is the coin itself, while a wrapped balance is a token whose value depends on the reserve existing and on merchants being able to redeem it. On Ethereum the token sits at an address starting with 0x, and a Bitcoin wallet can’t receive to that kind of address. Mix the two up and funds can end up stuck.

Going back to BTC takes its own step: redeem through a merchant, with KYC, or swap the token for BTC on a service that lists both.

Listings are the other difference. Exchanges and apps pick which wrapped tokens they support, and Coinbase dropped this one in December 2024. Bitcoin on its own network keeps moving whatever an exchange decides to list.

How Is WBTC Backed and Custodied?

Until August 2024, BitGo held all three keys of the WBTC multisig in the United States, and minting or burning needed two signatures. On August 9, 2024, it announced a joint venture with BiT Global, a Hong Kong-registered trust and company service provider, and kept a minority stake. By October 9, 2024, control of the bitcoin was split between Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States.

The backlash came quickly, and most of it was about Justin Sun’s ties to BiT Global. MakerDAO moved to drop the token as collateral for DAI, Blockworks reported.

In aMarch 1, 2026 announcement, BiT Global said it would act as custodian for WBTC vault management and hold both the user key and the backup key, one in Hong Kong and one in Singapore. BitGo keeps the third key through its US technology entity and still runs the wallet infrastructure. The handover was due to finish on May 1, 2026. As of October 20, 2026, we hadn’t found public confirmation that it did.

More changes are on the way. On October 19, 2026, WBTC said it was preparing to move the reserve to new custodian Bitcoin deposit addresses and was exploring a multi-custodian model, so it would rely less on a single provider. Thepress release gave no dates. It tied the plan to future quantum computing risks and said a new address alone doesn’t make bitcoin quantum-resistant.

In 2024 BitGo said both companies would keep publishing real-time proof of reserves on wbtc.network. Check it before a large conversion, especially while the address move is pending.

What Risks Come with Converting BTC to WBTC?

With plain BTC, the main thing to protect is your keys. Wrapping adds three dependencies: the custodian holding the reserve, the smart contract code, and the exchanges and apps that decide whether to support the token. Any of them can fail on its own, and your own mistakes still count.

The vault. BiT Global and BitGo hold the keys to the reserve, so a problem there could leave tokens without full backing.

Code and bridges. Contracts can have bugs, and cross-chain versions add bridge infrastructure on top. On August 4, 2026, BitGo announced that Chainlink CCIP would replace LayerZero as WBTC’s only cross-chain provider, Bitcoin.com News reported. By October 20, 2026, we hadn’t found a report that the switch was finished.

Delistings, as whenCoinbase suspended WBTC trading on December 19, 2024, citing its listing standards.

Redemption through the official route means merchants and KYC.

Plain mistakes: the wrong network, or an address of the wrong type.

When Does It Make Sense to Use WBTC?

Wrapping is worth it when you want bitcoin exposure inside an Ethereum app that accepts it, such as a lending market or a liquidity pool. Look at the app’s supported tokens before you wrap anything. Some markets and pools prefer cbBTC or tBTC, and the token you end up with has to match what they take.

If you just want to hold bitcoin for years, native BTC in a wallet you control keeps the custodian out of the picture. The extra steps and fees of wrapping pay off when you have a specific DeFi use for the token. Weigh the custody changes described above against that use. This isn’t investment advice.

How Can You Convert BTC to WBTC?

ChangeNOW is one way to do it. The other two are a WBTC merchant and a centralized exchange that lists both coins. ChangeNOW has been running since 2017, reports 10M+ users and has 24/7 human support. A standard swap needs no account. No account doesn’t mean no KYC, though, and compliance checks may apply under its AML/KYC policy.

The swap on ChangeNOW takes five steps:

Pick BTC as the coin you send and WBTC as the one you get, then enter the amount.

Choose a fixed or a floating rate. A fixed rate holds the quote, a floating one moves with the market.

Paste an Ethereum address you control, because WBTC is paid out on Ethereum.

Check the final amount before you confirm, then send BTC to the deposit address.

Wait for the Bitcoin confirmations, and keep a little ETH in the receiving wallet for gas later.

A merchant suits people who are ready to pass that merchant’s KYC. An exchange makes sense if you already have an account there and it still lists WBTC.

FAQ

Is WBTC always worth exactly one BTC?

Not exactly. Each WBTC can be redeemed for one bitcoin through a merchant, and that redemption route is what keeps the two prices close. On exchanges and in DeFi pools, it trades at its own market price. Small gaps appear when a pool is thin or when a lot of people unwrap at once, after custody news for example. For a large swap, check the WBTC amount in the quote against the BTC you send. Don’t assume it’s 1:1.

Can I send WBTC to a Bitcoin wallet?

No. The token needs an address on the network it’s issued on, and Ethereum wallets usually refuse a Bitcoin address before anything is sent. The slip people make more often is the network. WBTC exists on Ethereum, Tron, Polygon and other chains, and a token sent on one network lands there, so you need a wallet set to that network to see or move it. Before swapping, check which network the service pays out on and use a receiving address on that same network.

Is WBTC still usable after Coinbase dropped it?

Yes. Coinbase stopped trading WBTC on December 19, 2024, but the token kept working on Ethereum and the other networks where it was issued. On October 20, 2026, DefiLlama still listed WBTC markets on Aave, Compound, SparkLend, Morpho and Euler on Ethereum, plus lending pools on newer networks such as Monad and Sui. Trading venues are the part that changed. Before converting, make sure your exchange or app still supports it, and compare the token contract address with the one on the project’s official site so you don’t end up with a copycat token.
