<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/what-is-dogecoin-meaning-explained" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Dogecoin started as a joke</a> in 2013, yet it is still the biggest meme coin today, which is why many people keep searching for its supply, price, and design. In April 2026, its market value was near $14.1 billion, far above Shiba Inu at about $3.47 billion and PEPE at about $1.44 billion.
This article covers who made the coin, how the network runs, why people love it, and how it differs from newer rivals, plus the main risks.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-who-created-dogecoin-and-why-was-it-launched-span-span">Who Created Dogecoin and Why Was It Launched?</h3>
Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched the coin in December 2013, using the popular Shiba Inu "Doge" meme as a funny take on Bitcoin. Neither founder wanted a serious money product, because the goal was to make crypto feel friendly, cheap and easy to try.
Early users tipped creators online and funded the Jamaican bobsled team in 2014. That relaxed start still shapes the culture of the community and its public image today.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-does-dogecoin-mining-and-proof-of-work-operate-span-span">How Does Dogecoin Mining and Proof of Work Operate?</h3>
The coin runs on its own blockchain and uses <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/dogecoin-proof-of-work-explained-for-beginners" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">proof of work</a>, which means miners use computer power to check payments and add new blocks. It relies on the Scrypt method, which is different from the SHA-256 method used by Bitcoin, and a new block shows up about every minute.
Miners also work with Litecoin through merged mining, so the same effort protects both networks at once, and that gives the smaller chain better safety than it would have alone.
Dogecoin mining hardware is no longer a home computer job, since special Scrypt machines do most of the work and the cost of electricity often decides if a setup earns a profit.
Bitcoin cuts its rewards on a fixed schedule, but no <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/does-dogecoin-halving-exists" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Dogecoin halving</a> exists. Each block pays 10,000 DOGE, so about 5.26 billion new coins appear every year with no limit, and inflation stays near 3.4% because the supply of about 154.5 billion coins keeps growing.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-are-the-core-features-of-the-dogecoin-ecosystem-span-span">What Are the Core Features of the Dogecoin Ecosystem?</h3>
The main features are simple by design:
<ul>
 <li>Blocks arrive every one minute.</li>
 <li>The average fee is near $0.03.</li>
 <li>Fees stay low because the network is built for small, fast transfers, which suits tipping and small payments.</li>
 <li>The network handles about 30 transactions each second.</li>
 <li>The chain focuses on payments and has no native smart contracts.</li>
 <li>Lending apps and other tokens mostly live on different networks.</li>
 <li>Shopping use is small but real, with reported payments at AMC Theatres and Tesla's online store.</li>
</ul>
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-why-is-dogecoin-so-popular-with-retail-traders-span-span">Why Is Dogecoin So Popular With Retail Traders?</h3>
Popularity comes from culture first and technology a distant second, since a friendly community, simple branding and <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-currency-news/musk-clarifies-doge-department-has-no-link-to-dogecoin-crypto" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">comments from Elon Musk</a>, who calls DOGE his favorite crypto, keep bringing new buyers into the market.
The coin hit about $0.74 in May 2021 and rose toward $0.38 in November 2024 during a Musk-linked rally, yet neither jump lasted, which shows how much mood drives the chart.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-makes-dogecoin-different-from-other-meme-coins-span-span">What Makes Dogecoin Different From Other Meme Coins?</h3>
The first difference is independence. DOGE runs on its own blockchain with its own miners, while SHIB and PEPE are Ethereum tokens that depend on Ethereum validators for safety.
The second is purpose, because Shiba Inu built ShibaSwap and Shibarium, a layer-two network that speeds up Ethereum payments, while PEPE depends on active trading, with a daily turnover ratio (trading volume as a share of market value) near 18.5% in July 2026 against under 3% for SHIB.
And market position completes the picture, since DOGE is still the top name in a meme sector worth about $34.7 billion in July 2026.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-dogecoin-vs-bitcoin-which-role-does-each-coin-play-span-span">Dogecoin vs Bitcoin: Which Role Does Each Coin Play?</h3>
Bitcoin has a limit of 21 million coins and halves its mining reward about every four years, so many holders see it as digital gold. DOGE goes the other way with no limit, a one minute block against ten minutes for Bitcoin, and a closer link to spending and tipping than to saving value.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-dogecoin-news-today-what-is-moving-doge-right-now-span-span">Dogecoin News Today: What Is Moving DOGE Right Now?</h3>
Reports on October 23, 2026 showed a broad crypto selloff, with the full market down about 4.59% and Bitcoin down about 2.49%. A chart review from October 13, 2026 pointed to support near $0.0795 and a possible bounce toward $0.0878, but an automated summary called the current trend bearish.
The <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/dogecoin-price-prediction-doge-building-bigger-than-meme" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Dogecoin price</a> now sits in a weak market, so the near-term picture leans bearish until buyers show they can hold that support area. And US spot DOGE ETFs were reported as approved, yet recent headlines about one issuer's fund show the status keeps changing.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-do-dogecoin-security-and-wallet-choices-affect-safety-span-span">How Do Dogecoin Security and Wallet Choices Affect Safety?</h3>
A private key is the secret code that controls coins, and a seed phrase is a list of recovery words that can rebuild that key. Anyone who gets either one can move the funds, so both should stay offline and away from websites, apps and strangers.
A <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/dogecoin-wallet-guide-for-beginners" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Dogecoin wallet</a> that gives full control of keys, such as a hardware device, fits larger holdings, while an exchange account is easier but leaves the keys with the platform.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-dogecoin-investment-risk-should-be-understood-first-span-span">What Dogecoin Investment Risk Should Be Understood First?</h3>
The main worry is price behavior, because the coin follows mood and social media buzz more than real growth in use. A $1 price would need a <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/dogecoin/" rel="noopener noreferrer">market value</a> near $154 billion at the current supply, which shows how far that goal sits from today's level.
Supply is the second worry. No cap first looks like a clear weakness, yet on second thought the falling inflation rate softens that concern, even if new coins never stop.
A small development team, low shop demand and strong competition from newer meme tokens add more risk, and the biggest unknown is whether real payment use can grow enough to hold the price without hype.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-should-readers-take-away-about-doge-span-span">What Should Readers Take Away About DOGE?</h3>
The<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/article/doge-day-joke-coin-comes-within-touching-distance-of-record-highs-on-4-20" rel="noopener noreferrer">coin began as a joke</a> in 2013, runs on its own proof-of-work chain, and stays the largest meme asset because of its age, community and easy trading.&nbsp;
Its weak points are the uncapped supply, limited use and price swings tied to mood, so live prices, supply and ETF status deserve a check on official sources.
