The selloff across Asian markets is extending into another session, with Japan and South Korea again under heavy pressure as technology weakness, expensive oil and renewed geopolitical tension continue to hurt risk appetite.
Bull Theory estimated that more than $600 billion had been wiped from Asian equities during the initial wave of selling.
The exact dollar figure depends on how regional market capitalization is measured, but the scale of the decline has been substantial.
Japan’s Nikkei initially fell roughly 2.7%, South Korea’s KOSPI dropped around 3.5%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost more than 3%, and China’s Shanghai Composite was also lower.
The pressure has not disappeared.
In the following session, Japan and South Korea remained among the weakest markets, showing that investors are not treating the original decline as a one-day panic event.
Technology and semiconductor stocks continue to take some of the heaviest losses.

AI Concerns Are Hitting Asia’s Biggest Tech Markets

One of the biggest problems remains growing concern over how much money technology companies are pouring into artificial intelligence.
Markets are increasingly questioning how quickly enormous spending on chips, data centers and AI infrastructure will translate into profits.
That is particularly painful for Asia because Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have large semiconductor and technology sectors.
Companies such as Samsung, SK Hynix and Tokyo Electron have faced renewed selling as investors reduce exposure to the AI trade.
Weakness in the U.S. technology sector is making the situation worse.
Nasdaq futures initially fell as much as roughly 1.6% during Asian trading, with S&P 500 futures also pointing lower. The Nasdaq then suffered another difficult U.S. session, giving Asian technology investors little reason to aggressively buy the dip.

Here’s why Asian markets are falling: 1. US stock futures drag Asian markets lower as S&P 500 futures fall -0.8% and Nasdaq futures drop -1.6%. 2. President Trump said the US is "not negotiating" with Iran, escalating geopolitical uncertainty. 3. AI and semiconductor stocks fall across Asia as concerns grow over returns on massive AI spending. 3. Rising oil prices above $100 per barrel fuel inflation fears and concerns that central banks may keep interest rates higher for longer.— Bull Theory (@BullTheoryio) October 22, 2026

This creates an uncomfortable loop.
Weak U.S. technology stocks pressure Asian semiconductor companies, which then reinforce concerns about the sustainability of the global AI trade.

Iran Tensions and $100+ Oil Add Another Problem

Geopolitics is adding another layer of uncertainty.
President Donald Trump recently said the U.S. was “not negotiating” with Iran, weakening expectations that a quick diplomatic solution would reduce tensions in the Middle East.
That matters enormously for Asian economies because many are large energy importers.
Oil prices have remained around extremely elevated levels, with Brent above $110 per barrel and U.S. crude around the $100 region.
High oil creates several problems at once.
First, it increases costs for businesses and consumers in countries that import large amounts of energy.
Second, expensive energy can keep inflation elevated.
And third, persistent inflation makes it harder for central banks to reduce interest rates.
Higher-for-longer rates then increase borrowing costs and reduce the valuation investors are willing to assign to growth stocks.
That is particularly uncomfortable for expensive AI and semiconductor companies whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings.

Why Asian Stocks Are Still Falling

The important point is that this is no longer simply one bad session caused by one headline.
Several pressures are hitting markets simultaneously:

AI and semiconductor valuations are being questioned again

U.S. technology stocks remain under pressure

Middle East tensions have increased

Oil remains around or above $100

Energy costs are renewing inflation concerns

High interest rates continue to pressure growth-stock valuations

The combination is especially difficult for Asia because the region has heavy exposure to semiconductor manufacturing and large energy-importing economies.
South Korea is particularly vulnerable because of the importance of Samsung, SK Hynix and other technology companies to its stock market.
Japan is dealing with similar pressure through its semiconductor and technology names.
Hong Kong has shown better resilience in the latest session, which means the selling is no longer equally severe across every Asian market. But that does not change the broader risk-off picture.
For now, I would describe the situation as an Asian market selloff extending into a second session rather than a completely new crash.
The next direction may depend heavily on two things: whether U.S. technology stocks can stabilize and whether oil begins retreating from current levels.
If oil stays above $100 and AI-related selling continues in the U.S., Japan and South Korea could remain vulnerable.
If geopolitical tension eases and crude falls, one of the biggest inflationary pressures on Asian markets would disappear.
For now, however, investors still appear more interested in reducing risk than aggressively buying the dip.
