when

This much is documented: on November 1, 2026 the lock expires on 275,015,625 ENA. That is 1.83 percent of Ethena's total supply and 2.05 percent of the amount circulating today, worth roughly $56.9 million at the current price. The release lands in a market where the buyback mechanism agreed in the summer is not yet working, because the threshold it requires on the circulating supply of the dollar token USDe is being missed by a wide margin. Our own reading follows further down in its own section.

Ethena runs a synthetic dollar in USDe that holds its value through a hedged position of crypto holdings and offsetting trades on the futures market rather than through bank deposits. ENA is the governance token of that system: holding it gives you a vote on the rules but no claim on the dollar token's earnings. That separation is precisely why the buyback was built in the first place.

What the ENA unlock releases on November 1, 2026

The date sits in the project's release schedule and covers the tranche that follows the large release of October 5. Back then Ethena dissolved the monthly cadence for the remaining investor allocations and let them run out in a single step. November 1 is the next scheduled stage: 275,015,625 ENA, around 2.7 percent of market capitalisation according to the release schedule at Tokenomics.

A release is not yet a sale. Released means tradeable to begin with, and how hard it bites depends on how much trading the market absorbs on an ordinary day.

The size against daily turnover

ENA traded for about $488.5 million over the past 24 hours, according to CoinGecko as of Wednesday midday. The released tranche therefore equals just under 11.6 percent of one day's turnover. That is a size a liquid market can digest in a day when it reaches the market gradually, and a size that visibly weighs when it is sold in one block.

For comparison: ENA's market value stands at roughly $2.775 billion, rank 40 among all cryptocurrencies. At smaller tokens a tranche of that relative size tips the price; at a market value in the billions and daily turnover of almost half a billion, the outcome is more open.

Ethena's fee switch: when the buyback actually starts

In late summer the token holders voted on the so-called fee switch. The resolution provides for 95 percent of the net proceeds flowing to the Ethena Foundation from the core businesses to go into buying ENA on the open market. The vote ran until September 2 and passed, as Bankless reported. cryptoticker.io wrote about the mechanics in detail at the time.

Fee switch means a protocol redirects part of its revenue to its own token holders instead of keeping it entirely in the system or in the foundation. The decisive point in Ethena's case is the condition in front of it. The buyback does not start with the resolution but only once the circulating supply of USDe reaches the first stage of $7.5 billion.

That condition follows a clear logic. The buyback is meant to be paid out of current earnings, and the earnings depend on the size of the dollar token. A buyback drawn from a small stream of earnings would be a promise without cover. The flip side: as long as the threshold is not met, there is no counterweight to new tokens.

$7.5 billion in USDe: the threshold and the $2.84 billion gap

USDe stood at a circulating supply of roughly $4.66 billion on October 21, 2026. That leaves $2.84 billion to the trigger threshold of $7.5 billion. Translated into growth: the dollar token would have to add just under 61 percent before the first buyback dollar flows. cryptoticker.io compiled this analysis itself on October 21, 2026, on the basis of the public supply data for USDe and the threshold written into the vote.

Growth of that size is not ruled out for a dollar token, but it needs a driver. At USDe that driver is the difference between funding costs on the futures market and the earnings on the posted holdings. If that difference falls, the yield falls, and with the yield falls the incentive to mint new USDe.

Why the buybacks will not cushion this unlock

The two figures belong together. On November 1, tokens worth roughly $56.9 million arrive in freely tradeable hands. On the other side of the scales sits a buyback programme that puts not a cent into the market at a supply of $4.66 billion. Pointing to the summer resolution describes an intention, not current demand.

There is also a second change from the autumn: at the end of September Ethena ended the ENA incentives that had pushed USDe's growth. That removed one channel through which new tokens entered the market, and at the same time a tool used to drive the dollar token's supply. For the $7.5 billion threshold that means the supply now has to grow out of its own demand.

89 percent in circulation: what is still locked of the ENA supply

Of the 15 billion ENA total supply, roughly 13.41 billion are in circulation, or 89.38 percent, according to CoinGecko as of Wednesday midday. That leaves about 1.59 billion ENA locked. The further that share falls, the smaller the leverage of individual releases becomes, because each new tranche meets a larger circulating amount.

At this point the sources contradict each other, and that matters for judging the coming years. The release schedule at Tokenomics lists 18 further dates through April 1, 2028 and sums them to 4,950,281,250 ENA, or 33 percent of total supply. That sum cannot be reconciled with the roughly 1.59 billion ENA reported as locked. For the near future the November 1 tranche remains the reliable figure; the sums for the later years in the schedule should be read with caution as long as the project does not confirm them itself.

This gap between two data sources is no marginal detail. Anyone modelling dilution over years arrives at very different results depending on the source, and a release schedule is no binding commitment by the project.

ENA over the week: weekly low $0.1759, weekly high $0.2093

ENA trades at $0.2069, a gain of 9.49 percent within 24 hours, according to CoinGecko as of Wednesday midday. Over seven days the token is down 0.25 percent, over 30 days down 7.42 percent. The daily range ran from $0.1868 to $0.2101.

Within the weekly window the low sits at $0.1759, reached on the evening of October 18, and the high at $0.2093 from the midday of October 21. The price has therefore pulled 17.6 percent away from the weekly low and stands around 1.1 percent below the weekly high. The daily jump essentially recovers what was lost in the week before; it documents no new direction.

For historical scale: the all-time high of $1.52 dates from April 11, 2024. The price sits 86.4 percent away from it.

Levels above and below for the ENA price

To the upside the first level to watch is the weekly high of $0.2093, immediately above the current price. Above that the round $0.22 mark becomes interesting, because it marks the area where the token traded before the setback at the end of September.

To the downside the daily low of $0.1868 counts first, then the weekly low of $0.1759. If the price falls below that zone around November 1, that would be the visible sign that the released tranche is actually reaching the market. These levels are observation points from the price history, no price targets and no recommendation.

If you have an eye on the yield on posted dollar tokens, check at the staking reward platforms not just the percentage but above all where that yield comes from. At USDe it comes from futures market trades, so it swings with the market. Our stablecoin comparison gives an overview of how dollar tokens are built.

Staking yield, custody and the holding period: four points for ENA holders in Germany

For investors in Germany, four things can be checked around this date regardless of where the price runs.

Buying route and authorisation. ENA and USDe trade on venues that fall under the EU's MiCA regulation. Check whether your provider is authorised for trading in Germany and which tokens it continues to offer under MiCA. Dollar tokens from non-EU structures are particularly exposed to that question.

Holding period and tax. On a sale within one year of the purchase the gain is taxable in Germany; after one year has passed it is not. If you earn a yield on posted tokens, you also receive current income, for which separate rules apply. Which part of your holding reaches the one-year mark and when can only be answered with cleaner records than an exchange's transaction list.

Custody. Governance tokens such as ENA sit, for many investors, wherever they were bought. If you hold them long term and do not take part in votes through the exchange, you can move them into your own custody. If you do want to vote, you need access to the governance procedure instead.

Leverage and liquidation. Price swings rise around an announced release date. A leveraged position that holds through normal volatility gets closed on a day like that. If you work with leverage, you are better off knowing the price at which the position is forcibly unwound before the date than after it.

Our assessment: the unlock meets a market with no buyback net

From this desk's point of view what is notable about this date lies less in the tranche itself than in its coinciding with a counterweight that is switched off. The evidence: the fee switch is agreed, its trigger threshold sits at $7.5 billion, the USDe supply stands at $4.66 billion, and the incentives that used to drive that growth have been switched off since the end of September. From those four points it follows that the buyback will with high probability generate no demand on November 1.

That is no statement about the price. A tranche worth 11.6 percent of one day's turnover can vanish in a friendly market. It is a statement about the structure: anyone budgeting the summer resolution as price support is counting on a mechanism that is not yet switched on.

ENA unlock on November 1: no buyback without $7.5 billion

Clarify the venue and its authorisation. Look up which provider holds your ENA and whether it is authorised in Germany. Our overview of crypto exchanges shows which venues are open to investors here.

Record the one-year mark per purchase. Note the purchase date for every tranche of your holding so that you know before a sale whether the one-year mark is reached. The tax tools and portfolio trackers help with that.

Check the source of the yield before you post tokens. If you post dollar tokens for a yield, look up where that yield comes from and how it swings. Our comparison of staking platforms sets out the models.
