Talent

when

Africa’s technology ecosystem has spent the past decade demonstrating its capacity to generate ambitious ideas, attract investment and build products that address important market needs. What it has been less successful at demonstrating consistently is the ability to convert promising innovation into durable, efficiently managed businesses.
That distinction deserves greater attention.
In an industry where product launches, fundraising announcements and market expansion often dominate the headlines, the less visible work of building strong operating systems rarely receives comparable recognition.
Yet the long-term success of technology companies depends not only on what they create, but also on how effectively they execute, allocate resources, develop talent and sustain performance as their organisations grow.
I believe the next phase of African technology leadership will be defined less by the number of new products entering the market and more by the operational maturity of the businesses behind them.
<h3 id="the-funding-story-is-changing" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>The funding story is changing</h3>
Recent investment trends reinforce the need for this conversation.
According to Africa: The Big Deal, <a href="https://technext24.com/reviews/african-startup-have-raised-2-billion-2026/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">African startups raised approximately $2.16 billion during the first nine months of 2026</a>, slightly below the equivalent period in 2025. More revealingly, the number of startups raising at least $100,000 fell from 381 to 311 over the same period.
The data also shows increasing concentration of capital among larger transactions.
These developments do not suggest that innovation has slowed to a halt. They suggest that access to investment remains uneven and that companies cannot reasonably rely on successive fundraising rounds to compensate for weaknesses in their operating models.
The commercial implications are significant.
When capital is readily available, poor planning, duplicated roles, inefficient processes and weak performance management can remain hidden behind rapid expansion.
When access to funding becomes more selective, these weaknesses become harder to ignore.
Operational discipline is therefore not simply a defensive response to funding uncertainty. It is a competitive capability that should be developed long before financial pressure makes it unavoidable.
<h3 id="operations-must-move-from-support-function-to-strategic-leadership" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>Operations must move from support function to strategic leadership</h3>
One of the persistent misconceptions within growing technology companies is that operations primarily involve administration, internal coordination and maintaining day-to-day business continuity.
That understanding is too narrow.
At the executive level, operations should be responsible for translating business strategy into the organisational capability required to deliver it.
This includes determining whether the business has the right structure, whether resources are allocated to the most important priorities, whether accountability is clear and whether performance can be measured meaningfully.
A company may have an excellent product strategy and an experienced engineering team, yet still struggle because decisions move slowly, business functions operate in isolation or priorities change without corresponding adjustments to resources.
In my experience leading the operational delivery of a digital technology product, one of the clearest lessons was that execution challenges rarely arise from a lack of technical capability alone. They often emerge when different teams operate with competing priorities, unclear dependencies and different expectations of what successful delivery looks like.
Addressing this required more than monitoring project timelines. I had to establish clearer responsibilities, coordinate decisions across technical and business functions, and introduce structured mechanisms for identifying and resolving delivery risks. What stood out was that effective operational leadership was not about controlling every decision, but about creating an environment where the right decisions could be made by the right people at the right time. That experience reinforced my conviction that operational excellence is not an administrative function; it is a strategic capability that directly influences a company’s ability to deliver innovation.
These are not merely administrative problems. They directly affect commercial performance.
McKinsey’s 2025 research on operating models identified clarity, speed, skills and commitment as four essential outcomes of effective organisational design. The research reinforces an important principle: strategy and organisational execution cannot be treated as separate leadership responsibilities.
For African technology businesses, particularly those expanding under resource constraints, the quality of their operating model can determine how effectively available capital is converted into commercial value.
<h3 id="scaling-a-product-is-not-the-same-as-scaling-a-business" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>Scaling a product is not the same as scaling a business</h3>
Technology companies often interpret growth through customer acquisition, new market entry or increases in transaction activity.
But commercial expansion does not automatically mean an organisation is becoming more capable.
A business can double its customer base while tripling its operational workload. It can recruit aggressively without improving productivity. It can enter new markets while increasing internal complexity faster than revenue.
These situations highlight the difference between growth and scalability.
Growth means the business is getting bigger. Scalability means the organisation can manage increasing demand without a disproportionate increase in costs, complexity or operational risk.
Executives should therefore ask questions that go beyond revenue and user acquisition.
How much does it cost to serve an additional customer? How long does it take to resolve decisions between departments? Are new employees becoming productive quickly enough? Which processes repeatedly require senior management intervention? Can the business maintain service quality without continuously expanding headcount?
The answers provide a more accurate indication of operational maturity than growth figures alone.
A company that cannot answer these questions reliably may be expanding without developing the organisational capability needed to sustain that expansion.
<h3 id="the-five-disciplines-of-operational-maturity" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>The five disciplines of operational maturity</h3>
Drawing on established principles of organisational effectiveness, I propose that African technology executives assess operational maturity through five interconnected disciplines.
First, strategic alignment. Every major business function should understand how its objectives contribute to the company’s commercial priorities. Strategy must be translated into measurable responsibilities, not simply communicated through leadership meetings.
Second, decision accountability. Organisations need clear ownership of decisions, particularly where responsibilities overlap. Ambiguity creates delays, repeated escalation and unnecessary dependence on founders or senior executives.
Third, delivery predictability. Companies should measure how consistently they meet commitments, identify risks and resolve dependencies. An organisation that repeatedly changes priorities without understanding the consequences will struggle to execute effectively.
Fourth, workforce productivity. Recruitment should follow demonstrated capability needs rather than assumptions that more employees automatically produce better outcomes. Talent investment must be supported by effective onboarding, performance expectations and managerial accountability.
Fifth, process scalability. Operational processes should be designed to handle increasing demand without unnecessary duplication. Standardisation, automation and well-defined controls should reduce complexity while preserving flexibility where it creates commercial value.
None of these disciplines is particularly revolutionary in isolation.
Their significance lies in whether leadership teams apply them consistently and use the resulting evidence to guide decisions.
Operational excellence is not achieved through producing more policies or introducing additional layers of management. It is achieved when the organisation can execute its strategy more reliably with the resources available.
<h3 id="technology-cannot-compensate-for-poor-organisational-design" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>Technology cannot compensate for poor organisational design</h3>
Artificial intelligence and automation are creating considerable opportunities to improve business productivity.
However, technology should not be mistaken for an alternative to organisational discipline.
Automating a poorly designed process may simply allow inefficiency to operate at greater speed.
Before investing in sophisticated tools, executives should establish whether the underlying process is necessary, whether accountability is clear and whether its performance can be measured.
Only then should the organisation determine where automation can reduce manual work, improve consistency or accelerate decision-making.
This also requires a more deliberate approach to technology investment.
The relevant question is not whether a company is using artificial intelligence, but whether the technology produces measurable improvements in productivity, cost efficiency, service quality or execution.
For emerging businesses operating with limited capital, technology adoption without a defined commercial purpose can become another source of unnecessary complexity.

<h3 id="building-organisations-that-can-operate-beyond-their-founders" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>Building organisations that can operate beyond their founders</h3>
Many early-stage technology companies depend heavily on the judgment, energy and direct involvement of their founders.
That dependence is understandable during the earliest stages of development.
However, as companies grow, excessive centralisation can become an obstacle to execution.
If routine operational decisions continually require founder approval, the organisation has not developed sufficient decision-making capacity.
Sustainable growth requires leaders to establish responsibilities, delegate authority appropriately and create performance systems that allow teams to operate effectively without constant executive intervention.
This does not mean introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
It means developing an organisation where accountability is distributed, decisions are made at the appropriate level and leaders can concentrate on issues that genuinely require strategic judgment.
A mature operating model should make the business less dependent on individual personalities and more capable of delivering consistent outcomes.
<h3 id="a-different-definition-of-technology-leadership" class="wp-block-heading"><a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>A different definition of technology leadership</h3>
Africa’s technology industry has no shortage of entrepreneurial ambition.
The more important challenge is building companies capable of converting that ambition into sustainable commercial performance.
Investors, founders and boards should therefore give operational capability greater weight when assessing the strength of technology businesses.
Beyond revenue growth and customer acquisition, leadership teams should be able to demonstrate efficient resource allocation, predictable execution, workforce productivity, clear accountability and organisational resilience.
This also requires recognising that technology leadership extends beyond engineering and product innovation.
The executives responsible for designing operating models, coordinating complex delivery, managing organisational performance and translating strategy into execution play an essential role in whether technology businesses succeed.
The next generation of African technology champions will not be defined solely by the originality of their products or the size of their funding rounds.
They will be distinguished by their ability to build organisations that consistently turn innovation into commercial value.
Africa has demonstrated that it can build ambitious technology products. The next test is whether it can build equally ambitious organisations capable of sustaining them.
