Kalshi and Polymarket, the two dominant prediction-market platforms in the United States and globally, reported a combined trading volume of US$53 billion in July 2026, as mounting interest in U.S. midterm election contracts drove a concentrated surge of activity across both platforms ahead of November polling dates.

The figure, reported ahead of the 2026 midterm cycle, underscores how political-event-driven demand has transformed prediction markets from niche speculation venues into high-liquidity platforms processing volumes that rival mid-tier derivatives exchanges. The combined total does not break down individual platform contributions, meaning neither Kalshi nor Polymarket's standalone July performance can be inferred from the aggregate number alone.

$53 Billion in July: What the Combined Figure Captures

The US$53 billion combined volume for July 2026 represents total transaction activity across both platforms, encompassing every contract bought or sold during the month. Trading volume in prediction markets measures the notional value of all positions opened and closed, not deposits held, profits realized, or the count of unique participants placing bets.

This distinction matters for interpreting the headline figure. A single trader cycling capital repeatedly through short-duration election contracts, such as same-day or same-week outcome markets, contributes multiple times to monthly volume while representing one participant. Event-driven markets tied to high-salience political cycles are structurally prone to this kind of volume concentration, where a small number of liquid contracts attract outsized transaction flow in a compressed window.

Previously, the two platforms had already demonstrated capacity for rapid volume accumulation: an earlier period saw Kalshi and Polymarket hit $8.56 billion in a single two-day window, a pace that, if sustained across a full month, would comfortably exceed the July figure. The July total therefore reflects sustained elevated activity over roughly 31 days rather than a single catalytic spike.

Why U.S. Midterm Elections Are Driving Prediction-Market Demand

Midterm elections, which determine control of the U.S. House and Senate, generate sustained trader attention across multi-month windows because the outcomes carry direct policy implications for regulatory and fiscal frameworks that markets price in advance. For prediction-market participants, midterms offer a structured, binary event with defined resolution dates, making them mechanically suited to the contract formats both Kalshi and Polymarket deploy.

Kalshi operates as a federally regulated designated contract market under Commodity Futures Trading Commission oversight, listing political event contracts legally within the United States following a protracted legal dispute that established its authority to do so. Polymarket, which routes trading through blockchain infrastructure and serves a global user base, has expanded its product set aggressively, as reflected in its launch of 20x perpetual trading for crypto and equity-linked markets, deepening the liquidity pool available to participants trading across asset classes alongside political contracts.

Election uncertainty, measured by polling spreads and the competitive character of specific Senate and House races, acts as a volume multiplier. Tighter races attract more hedging activity from participants with genuine economic exposure to policy outcomes, while wider spreads still draw speculative flow from traders seeking short-duration, high-certainty payoffs. As the midterm cycle advances toward November, that uncertainty premium typically rises, suggesting the July volume may represent an early-cycle baseline rather than a peak.

Platform-Level Context: What July Volume Does Not Reveal

Because the $53 billion figure is a combined total, it cannot be used to determine which platform processed more activity, which offered tighter spreads on contested races, or which attracted more new participants. The two platforms operate under structurally different regulatory and infrastructure conditions: Kalshi's CFTC-regulated status constrains its addressable market to U.S. persons while providing institutional credibility, while Polymarket's decentralized architecture allows global participation at the cost of U.S. regulatory clarity.

Kalshi has continued to expand its contract universe beyond political markets. The platform has moved into commodities, as evidenced by its 15-minute gold market outpacing Ethereum in contract volume, and has invested in infrastructure velocity through its integration with Solana-based DoubleZero for high-speed data feeds. This diversification means Kalshi's July contribution to the combined figure likely reflects activity across multiple contract categories, not exclusively election markets.

Polymarket's perpetual product additions signal a parallel strategic move: by introducing leveraged instruments alongside traditional prediction contracts, the platform captures volume from participants who might otherwise use centralized derivatives venues, potentially inflating its monthly transaction totals relative to pure-prediction activity. How much of the combined $53 billion reflects leveraged perp volume versus binary election contracts is not established by the available reporting.

How to Read Prediction-Market Volume Against Broader Market Benchmarks

US$53 billion in monthly volume positions the Kalshi-Polymarket combined total within a range comparable to mid-scale centralized crypto derivatives platforms on a per-month basis, though the comparison requires care. Prediction-market contracts settle at 0 or 1, meaning maximum notional exposure per contract is bounded, while crypto perpetuals can carry uncapped leveraged exposure. A dollar of prediction-market volume therefore represents different risk characteristics than a dollar of derivatives volume on a leveraged venue.

For traders and capital allocators watching these platforms, the more operationally relevant metric is open interest, which captures capital currently committed to unresolved positions, rather than cumulative volume. Open interest data, which was not included in the reported July figures, would indicate how much of the month's $53 billion in transactions represents active, unresolved election exposure versus closed, settled, or rolled positions.

Kalshi's product development offers one indirect signal: the platform's Ethereum perpetual volume has been heavily concentrated at a single trade size, a pattern that suggests either algorithmic participation or a specific participant profile driving activity metrics. If similar concentration characterizes election contract volume on either platform, headline monthly volume figures would overstate the breadth of market participation relative to what a uniformly distributed trader base would imply.

What Remains Unconfirmed and What to Watch Before November

The $53 billion combined July figure has not been independently corroborated by a named primary source within the current research record. The claim is reported as attributed to the platforms or to observers tracking the midterm cycle, but no official press release, regulatory filing, or platform-published data dashboard has been independently verified as the originating source. Readers should treat this figure as reported rather than confirmed.

The concrete triggers to monitor between now and November include: whether Kalshi or Polymarket publish official monthly volume disclosures that confirm or revise the July number; whether CFTC commentary on political event contracts intensifies as midterm volumes grow; and whether polling movements in competitive Senate races cause measurable open-interest spikes that traders can track via on-chain Polymarket data or Kalshi's public market pages. August and September volume, when race outcomes typically sharpen, will indicate whether July represented a structural step-change or a seasonal peak driven by early speculative positioning.

FAQ: Kalshi, Polymarket, and the $53 Billion July Volume

What was Kalshi and Polymarket's combined trading volume in July?

According to reporting ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm cycle, the two platforms recorded a combined trading volume of US$53 billion in July 2026. This figure has not been independently verified against a named primary source in the current research record and should be treated as reported rather than confirmed.

Why are U.S. midterms relevant to prediction-market trading volumes?

Midterm elections determine congressional control, generating policy uncertainty that participants hedge or speculate on through binary outcome contracts. Prediction markets are structurally well-suited to this demand: contracts resolve at a defined date, carry clear win or lose payoffs, and attract both hedgers with genuine policy exposure and speculative traders seeking short-duration positions. Volume tends to rise as polling dates approach and race outcomes become more uncertain.

Does the combined volume figure show which platform was larger in July?

No. The US$53 billion figure is a combined total for Kalshi and Polymarket and does not reveal the individual contribution of either platform. Kalshi and Polymarket operate under different regulatory structures, serve different geographic user bases, and have expanded into different adjacent product categories, meaning their respective volume profiles are unlikely to be symmetric even if the combined total is accurate.

Is prediction-market trading volume the same as money deposited or profits earned?

No. Trading volume measures the total notional value of all transactions executed during a period. It is distinct from total deposits or capital held on platform, the number of unique participants, and profits or losses realized by traders. A single participant trading in and out of multiple contracts repeatedly contributes to volume each time a transaction settles, so volume figures can grow significantly faster than the underlying capital base or user count would suggest.
