On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, a Google Cloud computing failure originating in the London Europe-West2 data centre completely crippled 31 primary internet services, including Cloud Storage and the Kubernetes Engine.
Although the physical server meltdown occurred in the United Kingdom, the interconnected nature of digital banking caused immediate international ripple effects, heavily impacting financial platforms in Asia, specifically Revolut’s services in Singapore.

Because the digital bank routes critical backend data through these centralized Google servers, Singaporean customers suddenly found themselves locked out of their funds, experiencing widespread failures with physical card payments, mobile app log-ins, and cash withdrawals at local ATMs.

Despite Revolut quickly releasing a statement confirming that all customer money and data remain securely protected, the severe delay in official communication triggered massive public backlash.

We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe. We’ve been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused.

Online user Account_482 heavily criticized the institution, noting that during the height of the global blackout, Revolut’s status page falsely indicated everything was “hunky dory,” warning the company that this “absolute shambles” would lead to a mass exodus of clients. The inability to access basic cash pushed many premium users to the breaking point.

You are a financial institution. You didn’t even let your customers know there was a global blackout, and your website still says everything is up and hunky dory.
Absolute shambles. I hope you have a few head in there that know how to sort this mess out or you’re going to lose a lot of people.

User @MartinstanIey stated that failing to process payments or provide customer support was the final tipping point, prompting them to officially downgrade from their expensive Ultra subscription plan.

@Revolut Not even being able to make payments or contact support is a major fail. Was thinking about downgrading from Ultra plan, this is the tipping point!

The real-world consequences were severe for others; user Elefarsee publicly demanded compensation, explaining that the sudden freeze on their account prevented them from legally paying their taxes on time.

@Revolut This is unacceptable @Revolut. It caused me a great disruption to not be able to pay taxes today. I hope you are already thinking about how to compensate your users.

Web3 dependence on Web2 servers may defeat the purpose of decentralization

The majority of blockchain nodes, decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, and crypto exchange interfaces pay companies like Google Cloud or Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host their infrastructure. If the corporate server crashes, the crypto platform goes down with it, entirely defeating the purpose of a decentralized economy.
The digital asset market has suffered this technical downturn before. In December 2021, a severe outage at the AWS us-east-1 data centre in Virginia immediately crashed major cryptocurrency platforms worldwide.
During that blackout, Binance US lost its ability to process user withdrawals, and Coinbase experienced severe log-in failures. dYdX, a platform heavily marketed as a “decentralized” exchange, completely halted all trading activity because it relied on AWS to host its order book.
This centralized cloud provider failure proves that no matter how advanced a blockchain’s mathematics might be, the network is fundamentally broken if its front-end website is controlled by a single corporate platform.

Can DePIN and self-custody eliminate corporate blackouts?

The blockchain industry is rapidly moving toward Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) to prevent these geographical server failures from freezing user funds.
DePIN protocols distribute data across thousands of independent, privately owned computers worldwide.
Storage protocols like Arweave or the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) can ensure that if a server farm in Europe loses power, the application pulls the identical data from a live computer in Singapore or Tokyo without the end user ever noticing a drop in speed.
Meanwhile, Singapore is having two very different conversations about AI. The government is pushing businesses and public agencies to use AI more, while the country’s financial regulator is warning about the risks behind the investment boom.
