AI news took part as Vitalik Buterin warned that Tor still falls short in his experimental privacy setup for AI agents.

He described a threat involving an AI provider cooperating with a Tor guard relay to manipulate traffic timing.

His warning accompanied an update combining private payments, local prompt rewriting, and additional traffic to obscure requests. He described the system in an X post, alongside the code for his implementation.

AI News: Why Tor Falls Short in Buterin’s Privacy Setup

Buterin said random cover traffic offers reasonable protection against passive observers. However, those protections weaken when a model provider colludes with the guard relay and actively manipulates timing. The guard serves as the first relay through which a Tor user enters the network.

Such cooperation could expose matching communication patterns despite the additional traffic, according to his assessment.

Buterin therefore argued that this application needs a more specialized mixnet. His proposed approach would accept higher bandwidth requirements in exchange for constant cover traffic built into the network.

That would mean generating extra network activity even when users send no genuine requests. However, Buterin did not announce a working mixnet or provide a development timetable. His comments identified a possible improvement while acknowledging shortcomings in the existing Tor arrangement.

How Vitalik Buterin Adds Privacy Layers to AI Agents

The current setup in the AI news assigns each conversation a separate Tor circuit and mixes requests with random cover traffic.

Meanwhile, zkAPI handles payment privacy, separating service usage from the identity behind the funding. A local language model rewrites prompts before an external model receives them.

Users can choose their own local model for that rewriting step. Vitalik Buterin said his setup uses qwen3.8-flash-next and brings the components together through an OpenAI API-compatible daemon. He described the arrangement as a paranoid mode wrapper for his PIII news agent harness.

The Ethereum Foundation introduced zkAPI with the Open Anonymity Project on October 1. Users deposit funds into an Ethereum vault and then authorize API access via zero-knowledge proofs.

The payment service verifies spending rights without receiving conversations, while the model provider processes prompts without learning the funding identity.

However, the Foundation acknowledged that payment privacy alone does not conceal IP addresses or information within prompts.

Buterin’s network routing and local rewriting address those separate sources of exposure. He did not claim that rewriting eliminates any possibility of identifying users from their submitted information.

An earlier October 4 experiment used personal health and travel information to generate diet and exercise recommendations. Buterin used a three-layer privacy setup for that exercise. His latest post instead demonstrated the updated arrangement through a simple research task.

Buterin Flags Delays and Upcoming zkAPI Gas Cost Cuts

In addition to the AI news, Vitalik Buterin also placed the pi harness inside a bubblewrap sandbox to restrict its operating environment. He then added torsocks to direct its network connections through Tor.

He said he was experimenting with MicroVM technology, without presenting that option as a completed implementation.

Buterin said the arrangement was becoming usable for practical work. However, he acknowledged considerable delays on AI news, particularly when starting a new conversation. The post provided no response-time benchmarks or comparison with an unprotected version of the agent.

Buterin’s AI news update also outlined planned reductions in zkAPI deposit and withdrawal gas costs on the Ethereum mainnet. He said those changes would arrive soon but supplied no deployment date or estimated savings. He also left the mechanism behind the anticipated cost reductions unspecified.
