Deutsche Bank’s custody launch adds a household banking name to the race for crypto assets.

Banks and brokers are moving into crypto while exchanges move into stocks and commodities.

Bank custody and exchange custody both leave the private keys with a third party.

Self-custody removes the middleman along with any route to recovery.

Deutsche Bank expects to open Bitcoin and Ethereum custody for institutional and corporate clients in Germany within weeks, with Asian financial centres to follow in 2027, Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the bank’s Corporate Bank, told Reuters on October 16. For a lender founded in 1870 and carrying one of the most recognised names in global finance, the decision to hold clients’ private keys sends a signal well beyond Germany, because it lands in the middle of a two-way contest in which banks and brokers are moving onto ground crypto exchanges have held for a decade while the exchanges push in the opposite direction, into stocks, gold and oil.

Wall Street moves onto exchange turf

BNY, the world’s largest custodian, has run digital asset custody since 2022 and on October 8 expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform to selected EU institutions under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Citi said in August it would launch bitcoin custody before year-end through Custody+, a platform where clients hold securities and crypto inside the same framework. The retail side moved earlier in the year, when Charles Schwab began rolling out spot Bitcoin and Ethereum trading in May with a 0.75% fee per trade and its own bank acting as custodian, a service it opened to all eligible clients on October 15 along with transfers of coins already held at exchanges, and Morgan Stanley started a pilot on E*Trade covering Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana at 0.50%, a price set to compete directly with crypto apps.

The difference with Deutsche Bank is reach in Europe. Its Corporate Bank and Investment Bank already serve corporates, asset managers, hedge funds and sovereign institutions with cash and securities services, and its September 16 announcement was aimed squarely at that client base.

Exchanges answer with stocks and gold

Kraken opened trading in more than 7,000 US-listed stocks to customers in the European Economic Area in August under its MiFID II investment licence, next to more than 700 xStocks, its tokenized equities, which the company says have passed $38 billion in total volume. Coinbase launched tokenized US shares for users outside the United States in June, each backed one-for-one by a real share, as part of the “everything exchange” strategy Brian Armstrong, its chief executive, has been pushing. Binance went after commodities first, listing gold and silver perpetual futures in January through its entity regulated in Abu Dhabi. Perpetual futures are derivatives with no expiry date that let traders bet on a price around the clock, and by June the Binance lineup had grown to 69 such contracts, covering crude oil and US equities as well. Binance’s own research put average daily volume in these traditional-asset perpetuals across crypto venues at $8.6 billion in March, almost triple the January level.

Both sides are chasing the same customer, an investor with an ETF portfolio and a growing Bitcoin position. Whoever holds both balances collects fees on each and keeps the client’s cash in the house. Exchanges pitch round-the-clock markets and a wider asset menu, while banks lean on decades of balance-sheet history and a supervisor looking over their shoulder.

Crypto’s old rival wants a cut

Satoshi Nakamoto embedded a newspaper headline about a second UK bank bailout into Bitcoin’s first block in January 2009, and the network was designed as a way to move value without relying on banks at all. Seventeen years later the banking industry is building products to hold that asset, and they now compete for a market that has grown every cycle.

The case for a bank vault

For an investor whose priority is institutional safety, a bank is a sensible place to start. Banks run under capital requirements and constant supervision, and MiCA obliges every crypto custodian to keep client assets legally separate from its own, so that a bank’s creditors cannot touch them in a failure. The EU deposit guarantee of €100,000 (about $116,000) covers cash deposits only, so Bitcoin held in custody at Deutsche Bank enjoys no state insurance and relies on segregation and oversight instead.

Why Coinbase users stay put

Millions of investors have long since grown comfortable leaving coins on an exchange. Coinbase has been listed on Nasdaq since 2021 and publishes audited accounts, while Kraken and Binance publish proof-of-reserves reports, cryptographic snapshots showing that customer balances are backed by assets on-chain, and Binance keeps an emergency fund known as SAFU. These practices spread after the 2022 collapse of FTX, which showed what happens when an exchange quietly uses client money. For investors who share crypto’s original distrust of banks, a top exchange with comparable safeguards tends to weigh more on the scale, especially when it also offers more assets, faster withdrawals and markets that never close.

Same keys problem either way

Bank and exchange custody are both custodial, which in crypto shorthand means not your keys, not your coins, since the institution signs every transaction on the client’s behalf. Hardware wallets such as Ledger and software wallets such as Exodus hand that control back to the owner, but nobody guarantees funds held there, and a lost recovery phrase or a malicious transaction signed by mistake has no help desk to reverse it.

None of the three carries deposit insurance on crypto.

One account or two

Investors settle the question in one of two ways. Some split their holdings, keeping shares and bonds with a bank or broker and crypto with a specialist exchange, which limits the damage if any single firm fails. Others want everything in one place, with one login and one tax statement, and the option of using one asset as collateral for another. That second model is exactly what Schwab, Citi’s Custody+ and Kraken’s European stock offering are selling, and the outcome of the contest will depend on which kind of institution investors trust with which asset.

The next front is already forming around tokenized deposits, bank money recorded on a blockchain that can move around the clock the way stablecoins do. Citi already moves tokenized deposits 24/7 across selected markets, and a group of US banks is planning a shared network for them through The Clearing House with a target in the first half of 2027. Deutsche Bank has listed the same product on its own roadmap, and its custody service will be open only to institutional and corporate clients at launch, so retail savers in Germany who want Bitcoin will still have to use an exchange, a broker or their own wallet for now.
