The October 15 launch covers more than 100 reference markets, including equities, indices, exchange-traded funds, metals, energy and foreign exchange. Ripple names market maker Virtu among clients already trading the products.

The offering is currently available through Ripple Prime’s British Virgin Islands licensing framework. Ripple plans additional regions, but the announcement does not establish general availability to US institutions or retail investors.

The client trades with Ripple Prime, not the stock exchange

According to Ripple’s launch announcement, Ripple Prime acts as principal in the client-facing swap. Those swaps reference perpetual futures listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid.

There are therefore several components between the institution and the conventional asset price:

A perpetual has no scheduled expiry, unlike a dated futures contract. Buying exposure linked to a stock or ETF does not deliver shares or fund units; a commodity-linked position does not arrange physical delivery. As with the varying rights behind tokenized stock products, the legal instrument matters as much as the asset named on the screen.

The principal relationship also creates counterparty exposure to Ripple Prime. It changes how the institution accesses the market, but does not remove the economic dependencies on the reference contract, its pricing system or available liquidity.

When the stock market closes, pricing needs another mechanism

Consider a hypothetical equity-linked position after the stock’s regular trading session ends. News may change what traders are willing to pay for exposure, but the last reference-market price may no longer reflect that information. A continuously traded perpetual can move while the underlying venue remains closed.

Its trading price is not necessarily the price used to value positions or calculate liquidation risk. Derivatives systems also use an oracle—a mechanism supplying a reference price—and a mark price used for risk calculations. How those prices respond during a closed session affects both the position’s valuation and its holding costs.

Trade.xyz’s equity-perpetual documentation describes an internal oracle that responds to order flow during closed sessions. An April 30 update shortened its time constant from one hour to 30 minutes, making it respond more quickly to price discovery. This is a smoothing parameter, not a statement that the price updates only once every 30 minutes.

The documentation also describes a constraint on the mark price relative to the last external spot price. Such controls mean the last conventional-market price, the perpetual’s traded price and the system’s risk valuation can behave differently during off-hours.

These rules describe the reference venue’s equity perpetuals. They should not be assumed to apply identically to every commodity, FX or index contract, or to determine every term of the client-facing Ripple Prime swap.

Funding can change the cost of holding the position

Perpetual markets use funding mechanisms to help align the derivative with its reference price. Depending on the contract and market conditions, maintaining a position can involve payments or receipts in addition to trading gains and losses.

Trade.xyz’s funding documentation describes a scaling adjustment to Hyperliquid’s formula intended to reduce baseline funding and moderate funding during weekend price discovery. It does not establish a fixed return or an unchanging cost for a particular position.

Ripple Prime’s client financing and funding terms must be considered separately. The launch release does not explain whether venue-level funding passes through unchanged, how additional charges are calculated or how those costs vary by client.

Cross-margining links the trade to the wider portfolio

Ripple says clients can cross-margin the new exposures against other supported asset classes and use RLUSD as collateral, subject to jurisdictional availability. Acceptance by Ripple Prime does not, by itself, establish that RLUSD is the collateral used in the underlying Hyperliquid reference market.

Cross-margining can reduce the need to fund positions in separate accounts when the broker recognises eligible offsets. It does not mean every position receives a full offset or every collateral asset is valued dollar for dollar.

For example, a firm might hold positions intended to offset one another. If their prices diverge during a volatile session, the portfolio can require more margin even though the firm still considers the strategy hedged. Losses can consume available collateral and affect its ability to maintain other positions.

Continuous trading therefore creates a corresponding operational requirement: collateral monitoring and responses to margin demands may be needed outside conventional business hours. A market remaining open is useful only if the institution can manage the position while it is open.

The launch leaves important commercial terms undisclosed

The announcement does not provide a public schedule of client leverage limits, collateral haircuts, financing charges or liquidation thresholds. Nor does it publish spreads, order-book depth or liquidity commitments across the full set of reference markets.

Those omissions limit what can be concluded about execution quality or capital savings. Virtu’s participation establishes institutional use; it does not demonstrate equally deep trading in every contract, particularly during weekends or market stress.

For an institution using a swap to manage exposure while another market is closed, the remaining risk is the gap between the two instruments. Price tracking, funding and margin terms determine how closely the position performs the job it was opened to do.
