Wednesday

when

You subscribe to a large data bundle on Monday, and by Wednesday afternoon, you are suddenly greeted with the surprising “Dear Customer, you have 500MB left” message, followed by the 200MB and 50MB warnings. This is an experience that most subscribers can relate to.
This scenario is typically followed by an outcry that by the consumer about data stealing. Folks blame the network providers, and seek for answers, especially on the social media.
I have reported these claims for a while and I thought to do something different this time for transparency sake.
I launched a verifiable, personal audit to find out exactly where my data was going. I documented every single action over two days and compared it with my smartphone’s app data usage report. Then, I compared this daily with the SMS reports from two providers: MTN and Airtel.
And I discovered a complex web of hidden background services, network overhead costs, and an invisible consumption gap that every Nigerian user pays for.

The set-up

To ensure my calculations and records were rigorous and fair, I created a space using two different networks and two different devices:
Device 1: Tecno Spark Go 2023. It’s an Android 13 Go Edition smartphone with 3GB RAM. In this smartphone, I inserted an Airtel 4G SIM and subscribed to a weekly 4GB plan at ₦1,500.
Device 2: Tecno Pop 9. This device runs full Android 14 with 4GB RAM. It is a more modern Operating System (OS) that handles app management slightly differently than Android 13. This smartphone housed an MTN 4G SIM, and I subscribed to a weekly 3.5GB plan at ₦1,500.
I understood before starting that device specifications, internet speed, and especially OS (Android 13 vs. 14) optimisation would influence background usage. But my mission was to measure my consumption by comparing reports from phone app trackers and juxtaposing them with reports from network providers.

Day 1 tracking: The YouTube download test

On the first day, I executed a high-volume data task. I picked three specific videos on YouTube and downloaded them on both devices. I waited until the YouTube app finalised the downloads to confirm the total file size.

Day 1: Service provider’s report (L-R: MTN, Airtel)

By calculation, the three video files totalled 813 MB. When I received the data usage report, Airtel’s automated SMS report for day 1 usage was 868.65 MB, while MTN’s automated SMS report for day 1 usage was 852.79 MB. Both networks charged me more than the video file size, with Airtel billing significantly higher.
I compared the network results with what my phone’s internal app usage settings reported.
Airtel’s Spark Go tracker reported that YouTube used only 797 MB. Yet, the Airtel network billed me for 868.65 MB. This is a massive discrepancy of 71.65 MB, or roughly 9% of the video size, disappearing on the Airtel network.
MTN’s Pop 9 tracker reported that YouTube used 835 MB while MTN billed me for 852.79 MB. This difference is much smaller at 17.79 MB; about 2%.

Day 1: Phone app usage calculator (L-R: MTN’s Pop 9, Airtel’s Spark Go). Note: X, WhatsApp, TikTok, and Google Services data usage was charged to an alternative SIM.

This led to the biggest finding of day 1: My Android 14 MTN device was better at reporting actual app data usage because the Airtel Android 13 underreported the download size. Also, the 9% Airtel gap is where an average user gets frustrated and complains about data depletion.

Day 2 tracking: The Google Play Store download test

On day 2, I needed to test different app behaviour and an option I can specifically monitor on phone app usage. So, I initiated the download of three different applications from the Google Play Store on both devices.
The three apps had a combined size of 169.57 MB. My data logs and phone app trackers confirmed that both phones registered 175 MB of usage. This could mean that about 5.43 MB of background data services (syncing, notifications, location checks) ran silently during the app downloads. This is reasonably fair.

Day 2: Phone’s app usage calculator (L-R: MTN’s Pop 9, Airtel’s Spark Go). Note: Spark GO had an initial 3MB usage on the Google Play Store before the 175MB activity. Also, X, Dramabox, and Google Services data usage were charged from an alternative SIM.

The next day, Airtel’s automated SMS reported 185.44 MB, while MTN’s was 190.38 MB.
The problem, again, is the network billing.
Airtel’s report of 185.44 MB was 10.44 MB higher than my phone’s local tracking. That is a 6% gap, and MTN’s report of 190.88 MB was 15.88 MB higher than my phone’s local tracking. That is a 9% gap.
These small percentage drains, accrued over time, will likely cause your data to ‘vanish’ long before the week is over. This can mean a large portion of your subscriptions (monthly or yearly) or run into GBs missing.

Day 2: Service provider’s report (L-R: MTN, Airtel)

Why is data vanishing?

After analysing two full days of logs, I did not find any evidence of direct data theft by MTN or Airtel; the operators did not just randomly take 500 MB when I wasn’t looking. However, every discrepancy is sourced from a data usage or download session.
Also, the personal findings revealed some factors that explain why your data vanishes faster than your phone tracker suggests”

1. There’s an invisible network tax.

This is the single biggest contributor to the perception of theft. A download isn’t just a straightforward process. When you download an 813 MB YouTube file, your device must communicate back and forth with Google’s servers and retransmit data that got dropped during a network disruption.
The network bills you for all traffic that passes through its towers, not just the exact file size. This overhead tax typically accounts for an extra 5% to 10% of consumption that users are hardly ever aware of.

2. The silent Android system drain.

Every modern smartphone has a background process that is always running. Android syncs background data for push notifications. This hidden consumption ran between 5 MB and 10 MB per download session in my test, and might be higher on another device.

3. The billing transparency gap.

The data shows there’s a discrepancy between what my device measured and what the network actually bills me for, and this is where user trust is destroyed.
According to my tests, this network billing gap can sometimes hit as high as 9% extra. There is no transparent report that shows or explains the extra consumption.
The entire conversation boils down to a trust deficit. To assuage it, network providers owe subscribers a detailed breakdown of data consumption, maybe monthly.

For users, the first rule is to acknowledge that every single interaction costs 10% more than you can track. Nevertheless, you can apply some necessary data-saving steps to save money: enable data saver mode, restrict background activity on all apps, and assume every download costs about 10% more.
