OpenAI is exploring the acquisition of Trail of Bits, a cybersecurity firm known for auditing major cryptocurrency protocols. According to the announcement, the companies have entered preliminary discussions as OpenAI seeks to expand its cybersecurity operations.

The potential acquisition could strengthen OpenAI’s security research capabilities and provide access to specialists experienced in identifying software vulnerabilities. Still, the companies have not reached an agreement, and the proposed transaction remains uncertain.

People familiar with the discussions indicated that negotiations remain ongoing, with neither company disclosing a possible purchase price.

Trail of Bits operates from New York and specializes in software security audits, vulnerability research, and adversarial testing. Its researchers examine software systems for weaknesses that attackers could exploit and help developers address identified risks.

The company has also established a presence in cryptocurrency security through its work with several blockchain projects. These include decentralized finance platforms Uniswap and Aave, alongside the digital identity project Worldcoin. Its experience auditing blockchain infrastructure could provide OpenAI with additional expertise in securing complex software systems.

OpenAI and Trail of Bits Build on Existing Security Partnership

The acquisition discussions follow an existing collaboration between OpenAI and Trail of Bits involving artificial intelligence and software security. In June, both companies introduced an initiative called Patch the Planet to identify vulnerabilities in widely used open-source software.

The program combines AI-powered vulnerability detection with expert security reviews to identify weaknesses and develop suitable fixes. Researchers then work on releasing those fixes publicly, helping maintainers strengthen software used across different industries.

Trail of Bits has also incorporated OpenAI’s security-oriented models, including Codex, into its vulnerability remediation processes. These tools help researchers examine software weaknesses and accelerate certain tasks involved in developing and reviewing security patches.

Potential Acquisition Could Strengthen OpenAI’s Cybersecurity Operations

For OpenAI, acquiring Trail of Bits would bring established auditing operations and experienced security researchers into its expanding cybersecurity business. Such capabilities could support efforts to identify software weaknesses while addressing security threats involving artificial intelligence.

The proposed transaction would also extend OpenAI’s involvement in cybersecurity beyond developing AI models and supporting external research partnerships. Additionally, Trail of Bits’ experience with open-source security could strengthen OpenAI’s ability to develop tools for vulnerability detection and remediation.

The firm’s existing relationships with blockchain projects would also add specialized knowledge of decentralized applications and smart contract security. Nevertheless, the discussions remain preliminary, and neither company has confirmed a final agreement or announced financial terms.
