Staking has long been the default way to earn from SOL, but a newer idea called Solana restaking is drawing attention from holders who want the same tokens to secure more than the base network.
The concept reuses stake already committed to a validator, so one deposit can support several extra services and collect extra rewards. Readers tracking Solana news today see Jito and Solayer mentioned often across the Solana ecosystem.
This guide explains how the model works, which yields the protocols state, where the risks sit, and what deserves checking before any deposit.

How Solana Restaking Works and Why It Matters for SOL Holders

Solana staking is easy to describe. A holder delegates SOL to a validator, the validator votes on blocks, and rewards arrive once per epoch, roughly every two days. Most restaking protocols accept liquid staking tokens, which are receipts such as JitoSOL that represent staked SOL, and a few also accept native SOL directly.
On Solana, the extra services run as Node Consensus Networks, or NCNs, the local counterpart of the actively validated services used on Ethereum.
In Jito’s model, launched in August 2024, a depositor places tokens in a vault and receives a vault receipt token in return. Operators stake that receipt token to secure NCNs, and the networks pay rewards back to restakers.
Turns out, the receipt token stays tradable, so capital remains usable while it works. And newer Solana projects can rent security from existing stake instead of building a validator set from scratch. Which is the core appeal.

Solana Restaking vs Liquid Staking: Which Option Fits Better?

Solana liquid staking returns a token that can move through DeFi while the original stake keeps earning, and restaking builds on that token rather than replacing it.
The two aren’t rivals so much as steps in a sequence. Native staking sits at the bottom, with SOL locked and a cooldown before withdrawal. Liquid staking adds flexibility.
Restaking adds another reward stream and, in the same move, another layer of risk. Which is why the choice depends less on yield and more on how much complexity a holder is willing to carry.

Top Solana Restaking Platforms Compared by Yield and Security

Jito
Jito’s restaking service launched in August 2024 and accepts JitoSOL, JTO and native SOL in its vaults, with each deposit returning a vault receipt token. That token can secure Node Consensus Networks such as TipRouter, a service that shares MEV and priority fees with restakers.
MEV, short for maximal extractable value, is the extra profit earned from the way transactions are ordered inside a block. Slashing terms vary by vault, so operator performance matters.
Solayer
Solayer restakes native SOL or liquid staking tokens such as mSOL, JitoSOL and bSOL, and returns sSOL as the receipt token. The protocol focuses on endogenous services, meaning validation work that runs inside Solana’s base layer, including Layer 2 chains, native apps and decentralized cloud infrastructure.
Holders can delegate sSOL to participating apps, such as the Sonic Layer 2 chain, or use it across DeFi. Solayer also offers sUSD, a synthetic dollar backed by US Treasury bills, with a stated yield of 3.9%.
Renzo
Renzo runs liquid restaking on more than one chain, with ezSOL on Solana, built on Jito vaults, and ezETH on Ethereum.
Rewards auto-compound, so manual claiming isn’t needed. The roundup reports over $1.47 billion restaked in total, with more than $36 million of that on Solana. Renzo says it has audits and a bug bounty program, but those claims deserve a check against the published reports.

These figures come from a protocol roundup last updated in January 2026, and every number is self-reported, so none counts as confirmed fact. Jito’s offering has the longest track record, with total value across restaking venues on Solana reported near $300 million in September 2025, although another estimate placed it above $500 million by mid-2025, a gap showing how much the numbers shift by date and method.
Solayer reported over $112 million in deposits, and its claim of more than one million transactions per second remains an unverified project statement.

How Much Can SOL Holders Really Earn From Restaking?

Base staking yield on SOL is commonly cited between 6% and 8%, while the network’s published schedule lowers inflation from 8% toward 1.5% over time.
At first read, restaking rates near 7% seem like a clear improvement, but on a closer read the gap over plain staking is narrow, since the stated rates sit inside the same band.
Rewards are also paid in SOL, so the Solana price decides the fiat value of every payout, and a single swing can outweigh a full year of extra yield.

Step-by-Step Process to Start Restaking SOL Safely

Wallet: The usual path begins with a wallet that supports Solana staking.

Funding: SOL bought on an exchange moves into that wallet.

Protocol: Audits, track record, vault terms and fees deserve a careful read before any funds move.

Deposit: After the wallet connects, SOL or an accepted liquid staking token goes into a vault, and a receipt token appears in return.

Receipt token: That token can sometimes be supplied to a lending platform for added yield.

Exposure: But each extra step brings its own smart contract exposure.

Key Risks of Solana Restaking Every Investor Should Understand

Slashing is the penalty that destroys part of staked tokens when an operator misbehaves or fails. On Solana’s base layer, the official documentation says slashing isn’t automatic.
But vault terms vary across restaking protocols, and each extra commitment raises the chance of a penalty. Smart contract bugs can affect deposits, claims or redemptions, and operator downtime can cut rewards.
Liquid exits matter equally. What happens to a receipt token when the market panics? Receipt tokens may trade below the value of the SOL behind them under stress, and a lock-up can stop a holder from leaving at the worst moment.
Especially when many holders try to leave together. Regulation of staking products also varies by jurisdiction.

What Does the Data Say About the Future of Solana Restaking?

The stronger signal is adoption inside the Solana ecosystem, where Jito and Solayer already hold hundreds of millions in deposits, yet restaking still trails Ethereum’s equivalent by a wide margin.
A bigger concern is that the yield advantage is thin while the risk stack is thick. Restaking also ties several Solana networks and operators closer together, so one failure can spread further than it would under plain staking.
And the biggest unknown remains demand. Specifically, whether real services will pay for restaked security.
If those services reach Solana payments, the Solana gaming ecosystem or Solana RWA products, such as stable assets backed by Treasury bills, restaking could earn its place. But that outcome is a forecast, not a fact. For now, the cautious reading is stronger, because the extra yield doesn’t clearly pay for the extra risk.

Final Verdict: What Readers Should Verify Next

Restaking lets already-staked SOL secure extra services and earn extra rewards, with Jito, Solayer and Renzo leading the visible field. The narrow yield gap and the fast growth of vault-based products stand out.
Still uncertain is how much real demand exists for restaked security and how vault slashing terms behave under stress.
Before any deposit, readers should check each protocol’s documentation, current audit reports, live deposit totals and vault terms, and compare them with fresh Solana news and the latest figures as of October 12, 2026.
