Every price on a betting board hides a probability. Odds of 2.50 say the outcome has about a 40% chance, before the bookmaker's margin enters the sum.

Value starts when your own estimate differs from that figure. If you rate an outcome more likely than the price implies, the bet shows positive expected value on paper, though only an accurate estimate turns that paper edge into anything real.

Below: how to turn odds into implied probability, how to strip out the margin, how expected value works, why estimates go wrong, and how the same idea applies to prediction markets.

From Odds to Implied Probability

Decimal odds convert to a probability with one division: 1 divided by the odds. The table shows common prices and what they imply.

10.0%

Calculated as 1 divided by the decimal odds.

These raw figures include the bookmaker's margin, so they slightly overstate the true chance of each outcome.

Stripping Out the Margin

Sum the percentages for all results on one market, and the total comes out above 100%. The excess is the margin, as a three-way football market shows below.

102.7%

100.0%

Illustrative odds, not live prices.

Each raw figure divided by the 102.7% total gives a fair probability for each outcome. Those fair figures make a cleaner benchmark for your own estimate. Our comparison of odds across platforms shows how margins differ between books.

Expected Value in One Line

Expected value measures what a bet returns on average per unit staked, if your probability is right.

Expected value = your probability × decimal odds − 1

At odds of 2.50, three estimates give three answers:

45% estimate: 0.45 × 2.50 − 1 = +12.5% per unit staked

40% estimate: 0.40 × 2.50 − 1 = 0%, a break-even bet before costs

38.9% estimate: 0.389 × 2.50 − 1 = about −2.7% per unit staked

Positive expected value describes an average over many bets. Any single bet still wins or loses outright, and cold streaks can stretch long even when the edge holds.

Why Your Estimate Can Mislead

The formula only works as well as the probability you feed it. Four habits often skew personal estimates.

Overconfidence

Bettors tend to rate their own picks higher than the evidence supports. Say an estimate reads 45% when it should read 40%: a fair bet then looks like an edge that is purely imaginary.

Favourite Teams

Loyalty pulls estimates toward the side a fan supports. Bets on a favourite team deserve extra scepticism.

Small Samples

Ten wins in a row prove very little. Variance can produce long streaks in either direction, so judge a method over hundreds of bets, not a weekend.

Stale Information

Markets react to team news within minutes. Estimates formed before a lineup change may describe a different match from the one on the board.

The Final Price as a Check

Bettors who want to test their estimates often compare the odds they took with the final price before the event starts. Markets absorb news and sharp money up to kick-off, so the last price tends to land close to the fair figure.

Bets struck at better odds than that final price, over a long sample, suggest the estimates hold up. Bets struck at worse odds, time after time, suggest the market saw something first.

The Same Idea in Prediction Markets

Prediction markets display probability directly. Yes at 40 cents implies a 40% chance, and any combined Yes and No price above 100 cents plays the role of a margin.

Dexsport offers both formats in one account. Its sportsbook shows decimal odds, while its prediction markets price shares between 1 and 99 cents, and sampled Yes and No pairs add up to 101 or 102 cents.

Our guide to multi-outcome markets explains how those prices relate across several rows.

Dexsport's operator, Dexapp LTD, holds an Anjouan licence, and its terms rule out arbitrage betting.

Conclusion

Implied probability turns any price into a percentage: 1 divided by the decimal odds, or the share price in cents on a prediction market. Once the margin comes out, the fair figure acts as a benchmark for your own estimate, and expected value shows what the difference means per unit staked.

The method depends on honest estimates. Overconfidence, loyalty, small samples and stale information all push personal figures off course.

Treat value as a way to read prices, never as a promise of profit. Check the law where you live, bet only at legal age, and expect that KYC or AML checks may apply. Responsible gambling means stakes you can afford to lose.

FAQ

Short answers on implied probability and value.

How Do I Calculate Implied Probability From Odds?

Divide 1 by the decimal odds. Odds of 2.50 give 0.40, or 40%, and odds of 4.00 give 25%. Those figures include the bookmaker's margin, so add up every outcome in the market and divide each figure by that total to estimate a fair probability for each outcome.

What Is a Value Bet?

Value bets have odds that pay more than your own estimate of the probability suggests they should. At odds of 2.50, a bet shows positive expected value only if you rate the chance above 40%. The idea depends entirely on the accuracy of that estimate, and any single bet can still lose.

Does Positive Expected Value Guarantee a Profit?

Positive expected value describes an average over many bets, and it holds only if your probabilities are accurate. Individual bets still win or lose, and long cold streaks happen even with a real edge. Margins, limits and mistaken estimates can also erase a small edge, so keep stakes within a budget you can afford to lose.
