Each-way bets give a horse two ways to pay: one if it wins, and one if it finishes in the places. That safety net costs something, since an each-way bet doubles the stake from the first click.
The arithmetic decides whether that net helps or drains a racing budget, and place fractions, field sizes and prices all shape it.
Below: how an each-way bet splits, the place-fraction formula, three outcomes worked through, the odds where each-way starts to make sense, and how a crypto sportsbook with separate Win and Place markets changes the picture.

Two Bets in One Slip

Each-way bets on a $10 unit cost $20. Half backs the horse to win, and half backs it to place.

Win part: pays at full odds if the horse finishes first

Place part: pays at a fraction of the win odds if the horse finishes inside the paid places

If the horse wins, both parts pay, since a winner also counts as placed. If it places but misses first, only the place part pays. If it finishes outside the places, both parts lose.

The Place-Fraction Formula

Traditional each-way terms pay the place part at a fraction of the win odds, usually one quarter or one fifth. In decimal odds, the place price follows one formula.
Place odds = 1 + (win odds − 1) × fraction
At win odds of 11.0 and one-fifth terms, the place part pays 1 + (10 × 0.2), or 3.0. At one-quarter terms, the same horse pays 3.5 for a place.

The place part covers the whole $20 only when its return passes $20, which means place odds above 2.0. Rearranged, the win odds must clear a threshold.

Back a horse at 5.0 each-way on one-fifth terms, and a place pays 1.8. That $10 each-way bet returns $18 on a placed finish, a $2 loss on the $20 outlay. Each-way bets on short-priced runners often lose money even when the horse performs well.

Field Size Moves the Terms

The number of runners sets how many places pay, and late withdrawals can change that number after you bet. Races that drop from eight runners to seven can lose their third place, which turns a third-place finish from a payout into a loss.
Our explainer on place terms sets out the usual thresholds by field size and how withdrawals affect them.

Separate Win and Place Markets

Some crypto sportsbooks skip the each-way button and list Win and Place as separate markets, each with its own price. Bettors can still build an each-way position with the same horse in both.
Dexsport works this way, with Win and Place markets plus a fixed-odds first-two market in its racing section. Its rules pay three places in fields of eight or more runners, two places in fields of five to seven, and win only below five.
Separate markets have one clear difference from classic terms. The place price comes from the market itself, so it can land above or below the one-quarter or one-fifth figure a traditional bookmaker would pay. Compare the place price with the formula before you split a stake.

Crypto Habits for Each-Way Bettors

Budget the full outlay: count $20 for a $10 each-way bet, never $10

Use a steady balance: a stablecoin keeps the value of a race-day budget fixed between deposit and the off

Fund early: network confirmations can take minutes, and racing markets close at the off

Check the terms on the day: non-runners can change the places paid

Conclusion

Each-way betting splits one stake into a win bet and a place bet, so it costs double from the start. Under traditional terms, the place part pays a quarter or a fifth of the win odds, and a placed horse only shows a profit once the win price clears about 5.0 or 6.0.
Field size and late withdrawals can change the places paid. Sportsbooks such as Dexsport list Win and Place separately, which lets bettors compare a market place price against the formula.
