A 2025 federal court decision mandated that confiscated Bitcoin be restituted to Bitfinex in cryptocurrency form rather than fiat currency.

Bitfinex intends to deploy these assets to honor Recovery Right Tokens and execute buyback-and-burn operations for its LEO token.

Despite this and other recent outflows, the federal government maintains a substantial Bitcoin treasury.

Federal authorities executed a significant Bitcoin transfer to Coinbase this week, linked to one of the cryptocurrency industry’s most notorious security breaches. On October 6, 2026, blockchain addresses associated with the US Marshals Service dispatched approximately 264.863 BTC—valued near $22.87 million—to Coinbase custody.

These digital assets trace back to the 2016 Bitfinex security incident, during which malicious actors exfiltrated roughly 119,754 BTC from the exchange platform. The breach stands among the most severe financial losses in digital asset history.

This represents the second documented movement of these specific holdings. In April 2026, authorities transferred a smaller tranche of approximately 8.2 BTC, valued around $606,000, to a Coinbase Prime deposit wallet.

Coinbase Prime serves as the platform’s institutional division. The service provides custody solutions and trading infrastructure for high-volume clients, including federal agencies.

Government representatives have characterized these movements as custodial arrangements rather than liquidation events. This classification carries significance for market participants monitoring potential government-driven selling pressure.

The legal framework driving these transfers originates from a 2025 federal court decision. The ruling mandated that authorities restore the confiscated Bitcoin to Bitfinex in its native form, bypassing conversion to traditional currency.

Law enforcement successfully recovered approximately 94,636 BTC from the breach in 2022. The recovery operation followed the apprehension of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, who orchestrated the laundering scheme for the stolen cryptocurrency.

Lichtenstein received a five-year prison sentence. Morgan was handed an 18-month term.

Bitfinex has outlined a dual-purpose strategy for the restituted assets. Initially, the exchange will deploy the Bitcoin to fulfill obligations related to Recovery Right Tokens, which were distributed to customers impacted by the initial security breach.

Subsequently, Bitfinex has committed to allocating no less than 80% of any surplus value toward repurchasing and permanently removing its UNUS SED LEO token from circulation.

This particular transaction formed part of a broader pattern of blockchain activity. During the same 24-hour period, government-controlled wallets relocated a combined 833.6 BTC valued near $71 million, representing the first such activity from these addresses since August 26.

Blockchain intelligence specialist Sani, who operates timechainindex.com, initially identified the movements. He documented a preliminary test transaction of 0.00115539 BTC sent to Coinbase Prime before the primary transfer executed.

The same wallets also relocated $31.63 million in BNB connected to forfeited FTX assets. This included a verification transfer of 0.127 BNB followed by a substantially larger movement of 40,285.07 BNB.

An additional 568 BTC transfer originated from the Potapenko-Turogin criminal case. That prosecution centered on a fraudulent cloud mining enterprise known as Hashflare, where defendants marketed mining contracts backed by nonexistent data center infrastructure.

Despite these recent outflows, federal Bitcoin holdings remain considerable. Current data indicates the US government retains approximately 323,693.83 BTC, with an estimated market value of $27.72 billion.

The 264.863 BTC allocated for Bitfinex compensation constitutes a relatively modest portion of the government’s overall cryptocurrency position.
