The collaboration between these two financial giants began in 1983, marking the debut of the first-ever S&P 500 index options offering from Cboe.
Beyond simply extending their existing arrangement, both organizations have indicated they’re exploring innovative product development that transcends conventional index derivatives. This exploration specifically encompasses the potential creation of blockchain-based options contracts.

Understanding the Tokenization Potential for Options

Tokenization involves converting conventional financial instruments into digital tokens built on blockchain infrastructure. This process can apply to equities, investment funds, and potentially derivatives like options.
In the context of options trading, tokenization would enable key contract elements—including strike prices, expiration parameters, and collateral requirements—to be encoded directly into smart contracts. These programmable agreements could facilitate automatic settlement processes driven by real-time market information.
Currently, this remains a conceptual framework. Neither Cboe nor S&P DJI has unveiled a tokenized offering or provided any implementation schedule.
Catherine Clay, who leads S&P DJI as CEO, noted in an official statement that demand for U.S. equity market exposure continues its upward trajectory. She emphasized the organization’s commitment to making the S&P 500 benchmark accessible to all investors through whatever format best meets their needs.
Craig Donohue, serving as CEO of Cboe Global Markets, highlighted that the partnership extension provides flexibility to explore emerging technologies while maintaining continuity for their current client base.

Trading Volume and Market Response

SPX options rank among the world’s most actively traded index derivative instruments. Trading activity hit unprecedented levels in 2025, with 970.6 million contracts changing hands—translating to approximately 3.9 million contracts daily.
Investor enthusiasm was evident as Cboe’s stock price surged more than 6% in response to the partnership renewal announcement.
This development fits within a broader movement of established financial institutions investigating blockchain applications. Nasdaq has partnered with Kraken’s parent company Payward to develop tokenized equities featuring voting capabilities.
The New York Stock Exchange is constructing a round-the-clock trading platform specifically designed for tokenized equity securities and exchange-traded funds. NYSE recently formalized a partnership with Blockchain.com to deliver tokenized U.S. equities to that platform’s customer base.
The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, responsible for safeguarding over $100 trillion in financial assets, has scheduled the October launch of its proprietary tokenization platform.
BlackRock has entered this arena through its collaboration with Ondo Finance. Additionally, a consortium featuring BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and DTCC has investigated tokenized equity opportunities.
S&P Dow Jones Indices has previously authorized blockchain-related use of the S&P 500 benchmark. The organization licensed the index to Centrifuge for SPXA, marketed as the inaugural blockchain-powered index fund officially licensed by S&P DJI.
More recently this year, S&P DJI granted Trade[XYZ] licensing rights for the S&P 500 to support a perpetual futures offering available on Hyperliquid.
Regulatory developments have created a more favorable environment for such initiatives. The Securities and Exchange Commission introduced an “innovation exemption” framework recently. This regulatory pathway enables tokenized U.S. equities to operate on-chain in a compliant manner without requiring registration as national securities exchanges.
This regulatory evolution occurred following the Clarity Act’s legislative stagnation in Congress. Tokenizing options presents greater complexity compared to equities due to the intricate mechanics involving expiration schedules, strike price variations, and settlement protocols.
At present, Cboe and S&P DJI have merely expressed interest without unveiling an operational product. Nevertheless, the extended licensing framework secures their S&P 500 options collaboration through 2051 while maintaining flexibility to develop blockchain-enabled versions when the time is right.
