IBM said on September 24 that its Digital Asset Haven platform can now connect banks to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger, letting them move tokenized deposits at any hour with the ISO 20022 payment messages their systems already produce. The link runs through a messaging adapter that IBM still labels as beta. It arrives after HSBC, Standard Chartered, Citi, DBS, UOB and OCBC completed live transactions on the ledger, leaving the banks that have not yet joined with an integration problem IBM now wants to solve.

How IBM’s adapter turns a payment message into a token transfer

A bank sends the same standardized instruction it would use for a conventional payment, and IBM’s platform translates it into a tokenized deposit transaction on Swift’s ledger. Core banking systems never have to speak blockchain. Digital Asset Haven, which IBM launched in October 2025 together with wallet infrastructure firm Dfns, handles wallets, key management and transaction signing along the way, and connects to Hyperledger Besu, the EVM-compatible framework behind Swift’s ledger.

Swift finished the bulk of its ISO 20022 migration for cross-border payments in November 2025, reporting 97% adoption. Banks have already paid for structured payment data, and IBM is selling them a way to reuse it for tokenized money.

Swift’s ledger acts as an orchestration layer, and final settlement still passes through existing infrastructure such as real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems.

Seventeen banks reached live payments in under a year

Swift unveiled the ledger at Sibos in September 2025, worked with more than 40 institutions during development and declared the system ready for initial use on July 9, 2026. The first cohort counts 17 banks on six continents, among them BNP Paribas, MUFG, UBS, Itaú Unibanco and Wells Fargo.

On September 5, DBS and Citi sent a tokenized U.S. dollar payment from Singapore to New York on a Saturday, and it went through in minutes. DBS compared that with the cross-border norm, which can reach two business days when a weekend and a time zone gap intervene. Citi brings volume to the trials. Citi Token Services has processed billions of dollars since its 2024 launch, and its 24/7 USD Clearing service works with more than 300 bank clients.

The deposit-funding math behind the banks’ push

The Bank for International Settlements defines a tokenized deposit as commercial bank money recorded on a programmable platform, with the holder keeping a direct claim on the issuing bank. That matters for funding. A corporate treasurer who moves $500 million into USDC takes $500 million of deposits out of the bank. Holding a tokenized deposit instead keeps the money on the bank’s balance sheet, where it continues to fund lending.

A New York Fed staff paper from February 2026 found that the contest between stablecoins and tokenized deposits depends heavily on regulatory costs and banks’ risk incentives. The BIS itself described bank deployments in June as mostly wholesale experiments.

Most large banks on the ledger already run proprietary tokenized money systems. Its Kinexys platform gives JPMorgan the biggest of them, and the bank has also tested its JPMD deposit token on Coinbase’s Base network. HSBC expanded its Tokenized Deposit Service in the U.S. in April, and DBS has operated its own EVM-compatible chain since 2024. Each works inside one bank. UBS’s Andreas Kubli has called interoperability the requirement for going further, and Swift’s membership gives it a head start there, with 59.8 million FIN messages per business day in 2025.

A U.S. alternative is forming. The Wall Street Journal reported in June that JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi and Wells Fargo plan a shared tokenized deposit network through The Clearing House for the first half of 2027.

Beta status, on-prem servers and the 3 a.m. liquidity problem

IBM also released Digital Asset Haven On-Prem, which lets banks run the full stack on IBM Z or LinuxONE hardware in their own data centers, with private keys held in Crypto Express security modules. IBM cites 99.999999% availability for specific configurations, not as a general guarantee. Tom McPherson, head of IBM Z and LinuxONE, said “tokenized and traditional assets will need to move side by side.”

The adapter remains in beta, and IBM has not named any Swift bank using it. Some crypto outlets tied the news to IBM’s past work with Stellar, though the September 24 release does not mention Stellar or XLM. Then there is liquidity. Moving a token at 3 a.m. on a Sunday takes seconds, but the bank still has to manage liquidity, FX and credit exposure at that hour while central bank settlement runs on business days.

The ECB is building the missing settlement leg

Days before IBM’s announcement, the European Central Bank launched Pontes, which links its payment infrastructure to blockchain-based markets so transactions can settle in central bank euros. Deutsche Bank, Santander and Clearstream are among the first participants. A connection between services like Pontes and commercial bank ledgers such as Swift’s would let tokenized securities, bank deposits and central bank money settle in one programmed sequence, including on weekends once Pontes moves beyond its current business-day hours.
