General Motors and Ford Motor Company are experiencing the most dramatic US market share erosion among major automakers in 2026, according to Cox Automotive’s latest analysis released Thursday.

The research examined 13 automotive manufacturers. Ford and GM registered the sharpest downturns across the board.
Through the initial nine months of 2026, Ford’s vehicle deliveries are anticipated to plummet 8.8%. This decline translates to market share falling to 12.5%, representing a reduction of almost one complete percentage point.
GM faces similar headwinds. Cox forecasts that GM’s domestic sales will contract by 6.2% year to date ending September 30.
The automotive intelligence firm anticipates GM closing the quarter with 16.7% market share, down from the previous year’s 17.4%.

Historic Low for Detroit’s Big Three

Among the traditional Detroit trinity, Stellantis—Chrysler’s parent organization—represents the outlier. Cox forecasts Stellantis will actually expand its market position through Q3.
Nevertheless, the aggregate market share of GM, Ford, and Stellantis is on track to reach an unprecedented low of approximately 36%.
Charlie Chesbrough, economist at Cox, indicated that Asian automotive brands are anticipated to capture over half of all US new vehicle transactions for a consecutive second quarter, nearing historic peak levels for this segment.
Industry observers attribute GM and Ford‘s difficulties partly to their limited fuel-efficient vehicle offerings. Escalating gasoline prices linked to the Iran conflict have accelerated consumer migration toward hybrid powertrains.
GM dealership networks report that certain customers have defected to competing brands specifically because GM’s lineup lacks hybrid options. Ford made matters worse by discontinuing its Escape compact SUV, which ranked among its most economical models.
Ford’s performance also suffered from reduced pickup truck manufacturing capacity. An aluminum supplier facility fire earlier this year severely constrained production volumes.

The aggregate sales volume of Hyundai and Kia is forecast to overtake Ford’s during the third quarter. According to Cox, this milestone would mark the inaugural instance of these South Korean manufacturers collectively outperforming Ford in any quarterly period.
Ford contested this characterization. In an official statement, the company emphasized that when viewing year to date totals, Hyundai and Kia’s combined figures still trail Ford, with an even more substantial gap when measuring revenue.
Toyota is projected to achieve a 1.1% sales increase through three quarters. Honda anticipates a stronger 5.6% uptick in deliveries.
Tesla’s performance represents a different narrative entirely. Cox estimates Tesla’s year to date sales will plunge 18.9% versus the prior year.
This deterioration would compress Tesla’s market share to 3.0% from its earlier 3.7% position.
While individual manufacturers experience varied fortunes, Cox elevated its comprehensive US vehicle sales projection for the year. The firm currently anticipates 16.1 million units sold, representing an upward revision from the previous 15.8 million estimate.
Erin Keating, Cox’s executive analyst, observed that the overall market has maintained relative stability throughout 2026 despite significant turbulence. She emphasized that Asian manufacturers offering robust hybrid portfolios are capturing territory at an accelerating pace.
Official third quarter statistics will be confirmed after all automotive manufacturers submit their finalized sales data for the period concluding September 30, 2026.
