(As per CoinGecko on 21 September 2026 at 1:30 AM UTC)
The broader market weakness did not extend equally to stablecoins and decentralized finance.

The DeFi market, which refers to blockchain-based financial applications such as decentralized exchanges and lending protocols, increased 3.2% to a market capitalization of $85.39 billion. DeFi trading volume reached approximately $6 billion, giving the sector a global dominance of 3%.

This divergence is notable because the overall cryptocurrency market declined while both stablecoins and DeFi recorded modest positive changes.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 70, indicating Greed today. That was down slightly from 71 yesterday, while the reading was higher than 57 recorded a week earlier.
However, the current reading remains just below 71 from last month, showing that overall market sentiment is still strongly positive. The small one-day decline suggests that optimism has eased slightly, but the index remains firmly in the Greed zone.

Comparative Insight: What Changed Today?

Bitcoin rose 0.8% on $25.44 billion volume, while Ethereum gained 2.8% on $13.95 billion. Smaller tokens moved far more: Venom jumped 76.4% on under $1 million in volume, whereas Saga's 49.0% gain had $147.01 million behind it.
Gravity fell 37.4% on $283.63 million in volume. Large caps advanced steadily, but altcoin swings were sharper and depended heavily on liquidity and trading volume.

What Does This Crypto Market Move Mean Today?

The September 21 update shows mild upward momentum rather than a sharp rally. Global market capitalization rose 1% to $2.88 trillion; Bitcoin and Ethereum gained, and the Fear and Greed Index stayed at 70 (Greed territory), down from 71 yesterday. Stablecoins were flat, while DeFi rose 3.2%.
The key distinction is between large caps and smaller tokens: Bitcoin and Ethereum moved by single digits, while Venom and Gravity swung by double digits. For readers, liquidity, volume, and sentiment matter more than percentage changes alone.

CoinGabbar's Market View

The September 21 update points to a cautiously positive market. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and DeFi gained, stablecoins held steady, and sentiment remains in Greed at 70.
Investment still carries risk. Greed readings can precede pullbacks, and Venom's 76.4% surge on under $1 million in volume shows how thin liquidity distorts headline gains.
Large caps suit those seeking steadier exposure, while small tokens are speculative. Readers should watch Bitcoin's price trend, total trading volume, sentiment shifts, and altcoin liquidity. This is not financial advice; invest only what you can afford to lose.
