Cardano developer Input Output Group (IOG) issued an urgent warning on September 18, 2026, urging users to avoid interacting with its official YouTube channel following an apparent account hijack.&nbsp;
The compromised channel reportedly hosted a fraudulent livestream featuring a suspected AI-generated deepfake of Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.

The livestream promoted a fake cryptocurrency giveaway, displaying a QR code and promising to “double your wealth.” The malicious broadcast remained active for nearly two hours, potentially exposing viewers to cryptocurrency theft. IOG advised users not to click links, send funds to the addresses shown, or share personal information and seed phrases connected to the channel.
IOG said it had contacted YouTube to regain control of the channel and stop the fraudulent broadcast. Until further notice, the developer <a href="https://x.com/IOGroup/status/2100784895081455962?s=20" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">urged</a> the crypto community to avoid the channel entirely and treat any giveaway claims associated with the compromised account as fraudulent.

The response from crypto users on X was largely focused on verification and account security. One user <a href="https://x.com/kshot9000/status/2100894587367657656" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">described</a> the incident as a reminder to verify a channel before trusting its messages, advising users to avoid unexpected links and independently check supposedly official announcements. The user also asked IOG to identify the canonical channel for updates while the compromised account is being secured.
Other users highlighted the speed at which these scams can spread. Antonio Gomes <a href="https://x.com/onchainantonio/status/2100845033653944713" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">praised</a> IOG for issuing its warning quickly, noting that compromised YouTube channels have been used to promote fake livestreams and wallet-draining links. The user encouraged followers to screenshot and circulate the warning, reflecting concern that victims could encounter the fraudulent broadcast through shares or recommendations before realizing the account had been compromised.

The incident also exposed frustration over repeated crypto impersonation scams and questions about platform security. One user <a href="https://x.com/badtoken_crypto/status/2100798062775988625" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">mocked</a> the familiar “send us crypto, and we’ll send you double” format and joked about the quality of the AI imitation. At the same time, another <a href="https://x.com/angrycryptoshow/status/2100923786593788067" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">questioned</a> why organizations still experience YouTube security breaches despite Google’s authentication tools. A separate commenter took a more critical position toward IOG, <a href="https://x.com/ChadGippidy/status/2100804513124712929" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">saying</a> users had already learned not to trust the organization.

Project Catalyst branding may have helped the fraudulent livestream appear credible by associating it with Cardano’s established community-funding program. Catalyst <a href="https://projectcatalyst.io/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">describes</a> itself as a system where users submit, review, and vote on proposals, with 2,221 proposals funded across completed rounds. Using a recognizable initiative provided the broadcast with an authentic ecosystem context, despite the absence of a verified announcement for the giveaway.
The timing also matters because Catalyst’s operational responsibilities have recently changed. IOG was <a href="https://projectcatalyst.io/blog/update-from-the-catalyst-team" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">identified</a> as the program’s operator in February 2026, while the Cardano Foundation and Intersect were involved in reorganizing its administration. By June, Intersect <a href="https://intersectmbo.org/news/intersect-update-special-edition" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">reported</a> that administration had transferred to the Cardano Foundation, alongside changes to specific IOG projects and the return of 2.06 million ADA to the treasury.
Cardano’s scam guidance <a href="https://cardano.org/common-scams/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">warns</a> users about social-engineering tactics involving convincing project-related material. For users, the key distinction is whether an announcement can be independently verified through official channels, rather than whether the branding or presentation appears authentic.

AI-generated celebrity impersonations have <a href="https://defi-planet.com/2025/06/ai-deepfake-scams-how-theyre-driving-fraud-and-fueling-crypto-scandals/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">introduced</a> new risks to cryptocurrency users, particularly through fake livestreams that present fabricated endorsements as legitimate investment opportunities. Scammers exploit the public recognition of industry figures to make fraudulent promotions appear credible. The combination of synthetic video, familiar voices, and real-time broadcasts can make it harder for viewers to distinguish legitimate announcements from financial scams.
Fraudsters leveraged AI to create lifelike videos of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, seemingly endorsing a fraudulent crypto trading platform called Quantum AI. The video spread across social media, leading investors to believe Musk backed the project. Those who trusted the false endorsement lost substantial sums.
TRM Labs <a href="https://www.trmlabs.com/resources/blog/ai-enabled-fraud-how-scammers-are-exploiting-generative-ai" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">reported</a> that user reports of scams involving generative AI increased by 456% between May 2024 and April 2025, compared with the preceding year. Deepfake cryptocurrency schemes were identified as a major category, demonstrating how automated content creation can support increasingly sophisticated financial deception.&nbsp;

Previous incidents illustrate the financial impact. TRM Labs traced a deepfake Elon Musk cryptocurrency giveaway reported in June 2024 and found that the associated wallet received funds from multiple victims within about 20 minutes. Its analysis indicated that the operators received at least $5 million between March 2024 and January 2025. The example shows how impersonation campaigns can generate substantial losses within a short period.&nbsp;
Earlier this year, MEXC <a href="https://defi-planet.com/2026/01/mexc-issues-urgent-warning-on-ai-powered-crypto-scams/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">warned</a> that crypto users are facing a growing threat from AI-powered scams, fraudsters are increasingly using deepfake videos, AI-generated voice calls, and fake support messages to trick investors into giving up passwords, private keys, and 2FA codes.
