Orionx responded by suspending withdrawals and starting a formal closure and asset restitution process. The exchange also filed criminal complaints against two co-founders over transfers allegedly made between 2018 and 2021.</p><h2 id="h-orionx-shut-down-follows-7-million-plus-asset-shortfall" class="wp-block-heading">OrionX Shut Down Follows $7 Million-Plus Asset Shortfall</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://orionx.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">OrionX shutdown</a> followed findings from a forensic audit of assets held in the exchange’s custody. According to Orionx, the audit identified transfers involving <a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2025/09/19/crypto-news-4-3b-in-bitcoin-ethereum-xrp-options-to-expire-ahead-of-triple-witching/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP</a>, and Polygon’s POL token. Those assets moved to wallets that the company says it does not control. The September 2 complaint names co-founders Roberto Zibert and Joaquín Díaz in connection with the alleged transactions. Orionx says the transfers occurred between 2018 and 2021. Both Zibert and Díaz have denied wrongdoing related to the allegations.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">The complaint now forms part of a wider response to the missing customer assets. However, Orionx has not announced whether investigators have traced or recovered any of the disputed funds. No third party has independently confirmed the current location of those assets. The exchange has also started reviewing its custody practices following the audit findings.</p><h2 id="h-frozen-withdrawals-shift-focus-toward-customer-restitution" class="wp-block-heading">Frozen Withdrawals Shift Focus Toward Customer Restitution</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the audit of Tether News completed, attention has now shifted to customers waiting to regain access to their funds. Orionx says withdrawals remain suspended while it implements its Closure and Asset Restitution Plan.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company says the restriction prevents some customers from receiving funds before others. It has described the withdrawal freeze as temporary and directly connected to the restitution process.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Orionx has already submitted the closure plan to Chilean authorities. The exchange also says the first phase of that plan is currently being implemented. However, customers still do not have a confirmed timetable for withdrawals or asset repayments. Orionx says it will communicate each stage of the restitution process directly to affected users.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">The OrionX shut down; therefore, it remains closely tied to the outcome of asset recovery efforts. Orionx says returning customer funds remains its main priority during the closure. The exchange has acknowledged the concern and uncertainty surrounding customers while access remains restricted. It has not said how much of the missing $7 million-plus shortfall could ultimately be recovered.</p><h2 id="h-tether-news-returns-to-orionx-after-2025-investment" class="wp-block-heading">Tether News Returns to Orionx After 2025 Investment</h2><p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2025/06/03/usdt-issuer-tether-makes-strategic-investment-in-leading-latin-american-exchange/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Tether</a> news has also returned to the exchange because Tether backed Orionx approximately 15 months before the shutdown. The stablecoin issuer exclusively led Orionx’s Series A funding round in June 2025.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">That investment linked Tether to the Chilean exchange before the current shortfall in assets became public. The original funding announcement no longer appears on Tether’s website.</p><p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tether has not issued a new statement addressing the OrionX shutdown. The closure also comes after Orionx faced a separate regulatory setback earlier this year. Chile’s financial regulator rejected the exchange’s registration application in June 2026.
