The difference between a founder who gets funding and one who does not is usually not the product. It is whether the founder can show the business has a clear path to revenue. Revenue is what investors price into valuation. And because investors want to get excited, building a clear revenue plan helps you tell the story they actually want to hear.
This is why my work with founders focuses on helping them build a predictable way to generate revenue. Then a good press can follow, not he other way around.
The funding climate in Nigeria is showing this clearly. Recent reports show that out of the $184.7 million raised across 51 deals so far this year, almost 72 percent went to only 10 companies. You can bet those 10 companies have a revenue playbook. Most founders do not have one.
How do investors really think about revenue when you want to raise funding?

They do not buy what you are making today. They buy the story of where the revenue is going. The revenue narrative is what gets investors excited.
Look at Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI. At the end of 2024, its annual recurring revenue was $1 billion. By May 2026, it had reached $47 billion. That is a 47x increase in 17 months. The company is now valued at $965 billion, surpassing OpenAI. Investors are not paying for the product alone. They are paying for the revenue trajectory.
SpaceX is another example. The company went public in June 2026 at a $1.75 trillion valuation. Its revenue last year was $18.67 billion. It was still losing money. But investors looked at Starlink’s 17 million subscribers, the $20 billion in revenue, and the data centres SpaceX is building in space, and they priced in the growth potential. The stock hit $2.2 trillion within a week.
A business plan is not a revenue playbook.

A business plan only tells people what you hope to do. It gets you press coverage, so, it is useful for starting conversations with investors, but useless for telling investors how they will make their money back.
A revenue playbook tells investors exactly how your business makes money. It answers the one question every investor is really asking: can this business make money predictably?
If you are planning to raise, you need a clear revenue playbook that gets you funded.
