Spacecoin, a project focused on decentralized satellite internet, on Sept. 2 disclosed the technical architecture of two core components: SOLAR, a communications routing protocol for satellite data transmission, and Lumen, a billing and settlement layer for usage fees. The announcement outlines a shift away from the conventional model where a single telecom operator controls both data routing and fee settlement.

How SOLAR and Lumen Work

According to a Spacecoin official, SOLAR is responsible for creating the routes through which data travels and handling communications delivery. Lumen, in turn, verifies how much each operator contributed to building those routes and distributes the corresponding fees. This separation allows multiple independent operators to participate in a single network, with users able to choose data transmission paths and verify each operator’s contribution for settlement.

The system is designed to connect infrastructure run by different operators into a unified satellite internet network without relying on a central operator for route decisions or usage-fee settlement. This could potentially reduce bottlenecks and increase resilience, as no single entity has control over the entire network.

Why This Matters

The current satellite internet landscape is dominated by a few major players, such as SpaceX’s Starlink, which operate their own networks end-to-end. Spacecoin’s approach aims to create an open infrastructure where various operators can interoperate, potentially fostering competition and lowering barriers to entry. For users, this could mean more choices in service providers and potentially lower costs.

Implications for the Industry

If successful, this architecture could serve as a model for other decentralized communication networks. It also raises questions about how traditional telecom regulations might apply to a multi-operator satellite network. The project is still in its early stages, and the technical details released are a first step toward building a functional system.

Conclusion

Spacecoin’s unveiling of SOLAR and Lumen represents a notable development in the quest for decentralized internet infrastructure. By separating routing from settlement, the project aims to create a more open and collaborative satellite network. As the project progresses, its success will depend on attracting operators and proving the reliability and efficiency of its protocols in real-world conditions.

FAQs

Q1: What is SOLAR?
SOLAR is a communications routing protocol developed by Spacecoin that creates the paths for data to travel through a satellite internet network, handling the delivery of communications between operators.

Q2: What is Lumen?
Lumen is a billing and settlement layer that verifies how much each operator contributed to data transmission and distributes usage fees accordingly, enabling decentralized settlement without a central authority.

Q3: How does this differ from current satellite internet models?
Current models typically involve a single operator managing both data routing and fee settlement. Spacecoin’s approach allows multiple independent operators to collaborate in one network, giving users the ability to choose paths and verify contributions.
