<p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/240-crypto-millionaires-revealed-in-new-government-data" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">HMRC's first official statistics</a> on taxable cryptoasset gains show that 17,600 individuals made Capital Gains Tax-liable cryptoasset disposals in the 2024 to 2025 tax year, reporting £1.38 billion in taxable gains. The inaugural dataset, published on 27 August 2026, also shows that 240 people reporting more than £1 million in gains accounted for £717 million of that total.</p><p>The figures provide an official view of the cryptoasset gains reported through the tax system for the first time. HMRC recorded 240 people with more than £1 million in cryptoasset capital gains, and that group reported £717 million in gains in 2024 to 2025.</p><p>The department also reported a marked sex split among individuals declaring cryptoasset gains: around 87% were male and around 13% were female. HMRC said those figures are rounded.</p><h2 id="dedicated-self-assessment-reporting-precedes-2027-provider-data">Dedicated Self Assessment reporting precedes 2027 provider data</h2><p>The statistics followed the introduction of a dedicated cryptoasset capital-gains section in the Self Assessment return, according to <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/capital-gains-tax-statistics" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">HMRC’s Capital Gains Tax statistics</a>.</p><p>HMRC estimated an additional £168 million of Capital Gains Tax from its <a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/glossary/ensuring-regulatory-compliance-a-crypto-industry-imperative" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">cryptoasset compliance</a> and education activity in 2024 to 2025. The estimate concerns the yield attributed by HMRC to those activities, rather than the £1.38 billion of taxable cryptoasset gains reported by taxpayers.</p><p>The new section created a specific reporting channel for cryptoasset gains within Self Assessment.</p><p>Under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, cryptoasset service providers will report customer information to tax authorities, with <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/240-crypto-millionaires-revealed-in-new-government-data" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">HMRC due to receive the data from 2027</a>.</p><p>Disclaimer: This article is provided for informational purposes only.
