On August 27, 2026, BitGo <a href="https://investors.bitgo.com/news/news-details/2026/BitGo-Acquires-NYDIGs-Institutional-Trading-Business-Expanding-Derivatives-and-Financing-Capabilities/default.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">announced</a> that it has acquired NYDIG’s institutional trading unit, which has enabled one of the largest regulated custodians within the crypto sector to gain a pre-existing derivatives and finance operation amid the ongoing trend of banks and funds consolidating their digital asset activities with fewer infrastructure partners. Following this acquisition, BitGo will bring on board around 30 employees of NYDIG and their institutional trading network.In relation to the broader market, this transaction highlights that institutions are increasingly seeking custody, trading, financing and settlement services under a single regulated umbrella.<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-why-one-stop-infrastructure-is-winning-institutional-flows-strong">Why one-stop infrastructure is winning institutional flows</h3>That demand is showing up in spending. Fireblocks’ April 14, 2026 <a href="https://www.fireblocks.com/report/financial-grid-global" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Financial Grid report</a>, based on a January survey of 638 financial-industry decision-makers worldwide, found that 88% had committed or planned to commit budget to digital-asset infrastructure in 2026. Among institutions that had already sized their investment, 53% were spending at least US$1 million.<a href="https://www.nydig.com/financial-infrastructure" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">NYDIG’s desk</a> offers structured products along with derivatives, financing, and capital markets services directed towards corporates, asset managers, family offices, and hedge fund managers. Together with BitGo’s wallet, custody, and settlement infrastructure, there is now more coverage for the institutional trade life cycle provided by BitGo.<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">“Institutions increasingly want to work with a trusted partner that can support the full lifecycle of digital assets.” — Mike <a href="https://investors.bitgo.com/news/news-details/2026/BitGo-Acquires-NYDIGs-Institutional-Trading-Business-Expanding-Derivatives-and-Financing-Capabilities/default.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Belshe</a>, BitGo CEO and co-founder, August 27, 2026</blockquote>According to Belshe, as a result of the acquisition, BitGo’s infrastructure and trading capabilities would be improved significantly.<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-what-bitgo-brings-to-the-table-strong">What BitGo brings to the table</h3>BitGo <a href="https://www.cryptopolitan.com/bitgo-4-3b-quarter-sign-institutional-boom/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">made its debut</a> on the NYSE on January 22nd, 2026, using the ticker BTGO. The company saw its <a href="https://investors.bitgo.com/news/news-details/2026/BitGo-Announces-Second-Quarter-2026-Financial-Results/default.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">revenue</a> growing by 79.6% year-on-year, reaching the total of US$4.329 billion for the quarter that ended June 30. Its count of customers has also risen by 26.2%, leading to the number of clients being 5,833.BitGo disclosed its Assets on Platform at US$65.2 billion. In terms of its adjusted figures, taking into account the assets for prior reporting periods using median prices for the current quarter, this represented year-on-year growth of 31.4%. However, the company recorded a net loss of US$19 million largely due to the US$18.8 million unrealized loss from the company’s digital assets.<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img class="wp-image-306639" src="https://www.cryptopolitan.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/bitgo-nydig-key-stats.svg" alt=""></figure>The regulatory framework is at the center of BitGo’s proposal. The company runs <a href="https://www.bitgo.com/resources/blog/bitgo-secures-occ-approval/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BitGo Bank &amp; Trust</a>, National Association, and on January 29, 2026, <a href="https://investors.bitgo.com/news/news-details/2026/BitGo-Becomes-the-First-Public-Federally-Chartered-Digital-Asset-Infrastructure-Company/default.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">declared itself</a> as the first publicly listed, federally licensed provider of digital asset infrastructure. These are important considerations for institutions that are concerned with counterparty and custody risks.<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-where-the-trading-demand-is-coming-from-strong">Where the trading demand is coming from</h3>The acquisition also arrives as regulated derivatives activity accelerates. CME Group said on August 4, 2026, that <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/media-room/press-releases/2026/8/04/cme_group_july_volumehitsnewrecordof27millioncontractsup23yearov.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">July average daily volume</a> across all asset classes reached a record 27 million contracts, up 23% year over year. Cryptocurrency contracts averaged 237,000 a day, representing about US$10.3 billion in daily notional value.Lending is moving in the opposite direction. Galaxy Research reported on August 14 that <a href="https://www.galaxy.com/insights/research/charts-of-the-week-crypto-lending-contraction-q2-2026" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto-collateralized lending</a> fell 16.78% in the second quarter to US$56.16 billion. Galaxy characterized the decline as gradual rather than another 2022-style collapse. NYDIG’s financing business, which allowed clients to borrow fiat against bitcoin without selling it, now gives BitGo exposure to that still-large but deleveraging market.<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-the-risk-regulators-are-watching-strong">The risk regulators are watching</h3>Greater integration also brings greater scrutiny. In an April 23, 2026 paper, the Bank for International Settlements’ Financial Stability Institute warned that large crypto firms are evolving into <a href="https://www.bis.org/fsi/fsipapers27.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">multifunction cryptoasset intermediaries</a> that combine custody, lending, derivatives and other services, potentially concentrating credit, liquidity and maturity risks.The paper cited Celsius and FTX in 2022 and the October 10, 2025 crypto flash crash as examples of how vulnerabilities can spread. BitGo’s decision to place more services inside one institution therefore makes its federal regulatory status more than a marketing point.For NYDIG, the transaction marks a shift toward vertically integrated power generation, bitcoin mining and high-performance-computing data centers.
