How Sui's Object Model Changes the Transaction Pipeline

Most blockchains put every transaction through the same pipeline: validators agree on a global ordering first, then execute. @SuiNetwork takes a different approach. Sui, built by Mysten Labs and launched on mainnet in May 2023, treats every asset, from a coin to an NFT to a smart contract package, as a distinct object with its own unique ID. Objects can be owned by one address, shared among multiple users, or marked immutable so no one can change them again. That ownership label is not just a metadata tag. Sui categorizes every object by who can modify it, and that classification directly determines how the transaction gets processed.

Transactions that touch only address-owned or immutable objects bypass consensus entirely. The object owner signs the transaction, validators verify the signature and object versions, and finality is near-instant.That fast path averages around 400 milliseconds, with no global consensus required. The practical implication is straightforward: if only you can touch a given object, there is nothing to race against, so the ordering step is skipped.

Where Consensus Still Applies

Not every transaction can take that fast path. Shared objects, such as a DEX liquidity pool that multiple users interact with concurrently, require consensus ordering through Sui's Mysticeti protocol. Finality is still fast, around 480ms, but these transactions are serialized. A heavily used pool effectively becomes a queue, with the network ordering competing requests before executing them in sequence. If two users submit a swap on the same pool at the exact same time, the network orders both transactions, executes the first, recalculates the pool state, then executes the second against the updated state. Ordering is guaranteed and conflicts are impossible.

Unlike traditional blockchains that enforce total transaction ordering, Sui introduces a causal-ordering model. Validators can independently process unrelated transactions, and the network scales linearly with additional computing resources. This is further strengthened by Sui's dual-consensus architecture, using Byzantine Consistent Broadcast for simple transactions and Mysticeti, a BFT protocol, for complex shared-object interactions.

In general, a smart contract developer should prefer owned objects to shared ones whenever reasonable: transactions involving only owned objects may bypass consensus on ordering entirely, while those operating on shared objects require sequencing and lead to a throughput bottleneck. Sui's guidance runs accordingly: single-writer, latency-sensitive designs lean on owned objects, while anything multi-party pays the sequencing cost.
